Young House Love » Favorites » And Now For A Household Crafting Challenge

And Now For A Household Crafting Challenge

The other night Sherry and I came up with the idea to challenge each other to craft something using objects around our house – the catch being that the OTHER person gets to choose the objects. It wasn’t necessarily a competition, but we still came up with some ground rules:

  • You can use anything to make the craft, but the three chosen items must be incorporated in some way.
  • The “challengee” may choose one of the items before seeing the other two chosen by the “challenger.”
  • No money can be spent.
  • The project will be shared on the blog, no matter how awful it turns out.

We rock-paper-scissored and I lost, so I was up first. I exercised my right to choose one object and I picked this bright string/twine because I thought it would be functional plus it could bring in some color (I was going into it thinking I’d try to make some sort of art). Sherry, quite dramatically, hid her objects under a bowl to reveal to me.

Craft Challenge Picks

Continuing the unnecessary dramatics, we decided to video tape my challenge – which I’m glad we did because what I ended up doing would’ve been hard to explain otherwise. So unfortunately you’ve gotta watch below to see the outcome. And if that’s not reason enough, might I entice you with these other teasers?

  • I enlisted Sherry’s help, but it was really just to force her beautiful baby bump on camera
  • Both Burger and Clara videobomb at some point
  • One of Sherry’s chosen objects came out of the fridge…
  • Sherry tried to talk me out of sharing the sound effect that I included at the very end of the video (I didn’t fake that – it was the true sound of the project culminating), but I said “my challenge, my video!”

My craft turned out much better than I expected, wouldn’t you say? Now to figure out where to put it… especially some place where it won’t get rank. Oh yeah, and one other thing…

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS, Y’ALL. Hopefully you won’t ever actually find me crafting with mayonnaise. We just wanted to see if it was possible to create a more cringeworthy video than last year’s April Fools rap-fest. Ah, traditions. If you want to catch up on our other “just kidding” posts of yore, you can find them here: 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009. Hope you guys are enjoying some good pranks (and some MUCH better music than the likes of this video) today!

PS: We’ll be back with a completely legit giveaway later in the afternoon. Totally swear it’s for real. Like $500+ real.

PPS: In case you really did forget about the time Sherry hung out with Eminem, you can get that whole story here.

You guys are too funny. Sherry’s rapping is so entertaining. Clara jumping on her bed cracked me up. It also cracked me up when Sherry said “I have a bun in the oven,” followed by “I hung out with Eminem.” Hey now!!

In Spain we do this on 28th December and I keep falling in all the pranks from you guys in the US! This inter-household challenge was a bit weird but anyways I was curious to see what John had done. Ha!

Hi Guys! Loved this! just a random post suggestion…I would LOVE to know how you guys are getting so much done. The blog, projects, the show house, the second book, running your own business, designing a range at target and oh you know, being parents and pregnant.

I work full time, have recently started uni part time and am clearly lacking in the productivity department. How do you guys do it?? Share your tips and wisdom! I’m guessing you guys work massive hours but you must also be pretty skilled at getting stuff done!

I think you have done a few posts on this in the past but I would love a more detailed look into it! Lots of non-weird love from Australia! xo (PS my husband and I recently hung a massive mirror, i used john”s trick of taking a folded up bit of cardboard to the wall to catch the dust. it was life changing!!! So much easier!).

Aw thanks Jes! We are essentially just working on nights and weekends and giving up sleep to squeeze things in and putting off anything that’s not dire (the house = not clean at all, for example), but it’s one of those “this is so not sustainable” paces, so we’re doing this like a sprint towards the finish (the showhouse deadline and our having-a-baby deadline) and then we’ll recalibrate and hopefully adjust to a much more “I feel human” pace. Haha!

Oh yes, I can claim all the responsibility for this train-wreck of a rap. I wrote the rapping part and John was all “we need a hook” and I said “DIY…. it makes me wanna cry? No. Hmm. DIY… until the day I die? Ok, let’s go with that.” My process is very grass roots, haha!

So sorry Amanda! I don’t know if we’ll be there then since I’ll still be recovering from a c-section (probably won’t be out of bed much at that point). Hope you have so much fun though! And know that I’m jealous that you’re able bodied and running through the show. We can’t wait to check it out – but it’ll probably be during that very last week to give me more healing time.

That video was ah-mazing! You keep raising the bar on yourselves!

The title made me cringe a bit though so I’m writing to help you out. Inter means across so an inter-household challenge might involve the Petersiks and the Bowers. Intra means within so an intra-household would be an accurate description of a John and Sherry challenge, given that you live in the same house. My Latin-loving heart (don’t tell Mr. Winkler I finally came around on that one!) would very much appreciate a title change.

    Thanks again for the laughs.

My husband (Jon-we-have-the-same-birthday-as-John) and I watched this and laugh-cried shortly before bed last night, which resulted in me (1) dreaming about you guys and (2) waking up singing, “DIY until the day I die…” Pretty catchy, what can I say.

We bought tickets to Homerama so perhaps we’ll see you again next month, with our progeny in tow. :) In the meanwhile, prayers for a safe delivery and good recovery!
