We Ordered A West Elm Duvet…

When we saw the amazing after Christmas sales at West Elm we had to spring for a new king sized duvet buddy for Ed the bed (get acquainted with Ed here and here). Even though Ed’s a queen sized bed, we wanted a king duvet cover because we thought it would drape a bit more over the sides (our old full/queen sized duvet cover was looking a little tight). Plus it’ll hopefully result in fewer sleep fights about who has more of the covers. So here’s what we got:

West Elm Bedding1

We love that it’s bright, bold, geometric, and full of energy. It just looks nice to wake up to. Plus it has a lot of the colors from our new house color scheme going on. And thanks to some huge holiday sales, the king sized duvet cover was marked down from $80 to $50:

West Elm Bedding3

Does anyone else love the red sale type as much as I do? I just get giddy when I click on something and those four little red letters (s-a-l-e) are there to greet me. And I’m greedy. So I googled around for a coupon code to knock those red numbers down to a little more.

West Elm Pic4

It ended up being $42.49 after the discount I dug up (around $50 total with tax & delivery), which we’re pretty excited about since it’s king sized. For some reason that size always sounds like it should cost thirty gold bars or something- it’s just so regal and Henry The Eighth-esque. So while we wait the obligatory five-ish business days, we’ll be dreaming of Ed dressed in his new king-sized uniform.

Godspeed new duvet cover. Godspeed.

Great choice! We also use king sized blankets on our queen for more drapability. I’m not sure what we’re going to do when we upgrade to a king bed. :)

I love your new bedding. My hubby and I have been looking for new sheets recently and found high quality jersey knit ones from WE. When we got them in the mail, we loved them so much I ordered a second set. And both times they were on sale! I’m currently in love with that store. Happy New Year!!!!

Hey guys! I just bought this same cover! I have been searching for something for our teal and brown master for two years now! i ordered the king but we have a queen duvet. Will I need a new duvet as well or do you think the queen will work inside of it. I have always hated how it bunches up in the queen duvet cover! You guys are awesome!

I’m so glad someone got this! I went post-Christmas shopping with my mom-in-law, saw this duvet and was drooling like crazy! But I just got married six months ago and we have a new duvet from C&B, so I just couldn’t justify it. :( We did score some amazing pillow covers though for $2.95 each! Yay sales!

Totally copying and getting it too! We’ve had a king size white duvet on our bed for 5+ years and it’s time for a little pizzazz. I’m guessing you didn’t buy the matching shams? I’m not sure if I should or not…I have white ones from our old set that would work but then again, they’re so cheap!

We didn’t get the shams since we have white ones we hope will work. We like unmatched shams for the most part so it doesn’t look too perfect.

Like the new bed duvet. You mentioned the previous duvet you used for 4 years.
Did it just work out that way? We’ve had the same Ikea duvets for the past 10 years that i switch out twice a year (although one is staring to look shabby, sometimes the current one stays on longer)…..what about sheets, do you change colors? I’m assuming your mattress is extra thick if so what brand fitted sheet do you have. I purchased mine at Target years ago and it slowly shrunk.

      Hey Maribel,

We found our blue queen sized duvet about four years ago at West Elm and have used it every day since. We love it so much and look forward to using it in the future guest room. It just worked out to be four years til we moved and wanted a new king sized one I guess, but it’s still in great shape so it’s not like it’s on it’s last leg. As for sheets, we have had the same regular sized queen sheets (not extra deep or anything) from Target. They’re organic chocolate colored ones and we love ’em. Haven’t seemed to shrink or anything over the years.

YAY! We have the same duvet in our guest bedroom; although, I bought it the moment I saw it b/c I loved it so much so I paid the $59 for the Queen size back then :(

I remember thinking when I bought it that “this duvet is SO YHL.” I have the same problem with the duvet not being quite long enough and showing the mattress right now; I have to get a stylish bed skirt sometime soon. We haven’t had to utilize the guest bedroom since we moved into our new home last May so no one has really had to witness the nakedness except us yet :)

I ordered this two! We have darker furniture and already have similarly colored bedding, so I didn’t get shams either. I got it to replace a very fun, but kind of younger feeling IKEA duvet. I am looking for ideas for wall art above the bed… hint, hint… I am thinking two or three panels of wallpaper or fabric or painting myself… and the rest of the room is black and white photographs of our wedding and also greenery.
Having a pretty bedroom really makes me want to keep it clean!

Love it! In fact, you inspired me (and pushed me over the cliff) to purchase this for our bedroom (of course a king for a queen bed: http://www.westelm.com/products/spring-floral-duvet-and-shams-b593/?lineid=1&cm_src=E:duvet-covers.)

I have to say at first, I was really nervous that you were going more bold with colors in the new house as I loved your old house so much, and began modifying our “new” house in your old ways about 9 months ago. But since we have a 2.5 year old, and along with my confidence in you both, I’ve decided that we should have more color in our home too. I love the posts coming from the new house, and so excited to see all that you do. Keep up the great work. Happy New Year!

I totally almost bought the euro shams (the rest of my bedding is white) that match your duvet! You’re right, the price can’t be beat!! But after tons of debate, I settled on some graphic brown and white ones from Zgallerie, which were also a smokin’ deal and came with the down pillow inserts as well! Whoot! Also…just want to say in regards to your most recent post…keep doin’ what you’re doin’…I love your blog and think you have a fun style all your own! :)

I’ve been eyeing that duvet off and on for a while now and you gave me the push to go ahead and order it, especially after seeing the 20% off code. Like many others, we have a queen bed and since they were out of the full/queen I went ahead and got the king. Since we already have a queen insert, I’m thinking I can always tuck it or sew it down to fit and use the extra fabric to make my own shams, saving the $16 it would have cost to order them!

      Hey Tamara,

Our existing full/queen sized insert will be too small for the king sized duvet, so we’ll be grabbing a king sized insert (probably from Ikea or TJ Maxx, where they’re super cheap) and then we can use the old full/queen duvet and insert in the future guest room so nothing goes to waste!

Heck, I loved the bed so much I went to West Elm and got the headboard in the photo, too! But my duvet is a queen, for a queen sized bed…I will be interested to see how your king duvet looks on your queen bed. Maybe I’ll need to upgrade! Great job on the blog!

QUESTION: What are your tips for finding trustworthy promocodes and online coupons? I’m typically successful at Googling anything I want to find in the world in “x” keystrokes or less (a guy at one store was totally impressed recently when I knew who made a vase I was eyeing in their print ad — too bad the vase turned out to be about 10 times what I had imagined. A nearly $800 vase!! In my dreams! Why does my salary not keep pace with my tastes? LOL) — but do you find one site better than others, and are some of the supposed bargin/coupon sites just a lure for spam, viruses, etc?

We just google the name of the store and the term promo code (ex: west elm promo code) or coupon code. Usually sites like retailmenot.com come up, which are generally trustworthy and the codes work about 80% of the time, so it’s definitely worth the minute or two it takes. Hope it helps!

My jaw dropped when I saw this post. I just purchased this duvet after months of trying to find the perfect pattern and color scheme. I couldn’t be happier with it! We also have chocolate colored sheets and I think they go great together. My husband built the Pottery Barn Stratton knock-off from Ana-White.com and together the duvet and bed are perfect.

What do you think of the quality of the Ikea bed? I wanted that bed for SO long, but when I finally made it from Memphis to Dallas to an actual Ikea, it seemed a bit wabbly and more off-white than white white. Maybe it was just that the floor model had taken a bit of abuse, but I was really disappointed! I’m still looking for an affordable four-poster that is similar.

We’d bet it was just floor model abuse. So far it’s sturdy and amazing (even on our old uneven wood floors with a huge heavy mattress on it). We have also read reviews from others who have had it for a longer time and they still seem to love it. Hope it helps!

Love it! I wish I had thought of using a king duvet on a queen bed when I had ordered my new duvet from Garnet Hill this past summer (after looking for MONTHS). Now, it seems a bit “short” to me, but I can’t justify getting a new set since this one is brand new.

BTW, my mom and I are hitting the West Elm and Ikea stores in Philly tomorrow for some post-holiday sale shopping. It’s like a little YHL-inspired field trip!

Just a quick correction, and hopefully not coming off as snarky.

Duvet is the warm thing you put over you at night, also known as a comforter (to some people). What you purchased was a duvet COVER. What you need to purchase is a duvet not an insert.

      Hey Ginny,

Very true. Thanks for the correction. Although Ikea sometimes calls their duvets “inserts” or “comforters” (but they work just as well as something labeled “duvet”). We had one that we used with our old West Elm duvet cover that was great (and nicely priced too).

Also, just wanted to let you know that I am so glad to see that you all are taking chances this new year with the new casa. My husband and I have started to do the same thing at our house (although we rent and can’t do all the major things that we would like to)and I can definitely say that I have been much happier in the end with the bold choices over the safe ones.
