We Ordered A West Elm Duvet…

When we saw the amazing after Christmas sales at West Elm we had to spring for a new king sized duvet buddy for Ed the bed (get acquainted with Ed here and here). Even though Ed’s a queen sized bed, we wanted a king duvet cover because we thought it would drape a bit more over the sides (our old full/queen sized duvet cover was looking a little tight). Plus it’ll hopefully result in fewer sleep fights about who has more of the covers. So here’s what we got:

West Elm Bedding1

We love that it’s bright, bold, geometric, and full of energy. It just looks nice to wake up to. Plus it has a lot of the colors from our new house color scheme going on. And thanks to some huge holiday sales, the king sized duvet cover was marked down from $80 to $50:

West Elm Bedding3

Does anyone else love the red sale type as much as I do? I just get giddy when I click on something and those four little red letters (s-a-l-e) are there to greet me. And I’m greedy. So I googled around for a coupon code to knock those red numbers down to a little more.

West Elm Pic4

It ended up being $42.49 after the discount I dug up (around $50 total with tax & delivery), which we’re pretty excited about since it’s king sized. For some reason that size always sounds like it should cost thirty gold bars or something- it’s just so regal and Henry The Eighth-esque. So while we wait the obligatory five-ish business days, we’ll be dreaming of Ed dressed in his new king-sized uniform.

NewBed Straight On

Godspeed new duvet cover. Godspeed.

I love a king duvet on a queen bed. I had the same problem you did — the queen never hangs off as much and with the king there is plenty of extra, etc. Plus I was able to get mine on clearance at Crate and Barrel so it a steal.

Love your new duvet! Obviously you will need to shop around for a new down comforter to fit inside that new duvet. Unless you have a different idea? We need a new down comforter so I am looking forward to hearing where you get your new one at a great deal.

      Hey Monica,

We’ll be grabbing a king sized insert from Ikea (they’re super cheap there) and then we can use the old full/queen duvet and insert in the future guest room so nothing goes to waste!

Very excited for all of the new posts to come with the new house! Love it! Congrats on the big move and Happy New Year!

Question – I have never purchased a duvet before….and I am totally trigger shy about purchasing one that I’m in love with (Maybe Sienna or Painterly Paisley from Pottery Barn, so $$$, eeeee!). My comforter is a Full size, so thankfully PB has F/Q size combined, but otherwise, should I be looking at a Queen sized Duvet to get the drapey effect?! I would love some REAL advice!

      December 31, 2010 at 11:03 am

      Hey Stephanie,

You want the duvet cover and the insert to be as close to the same size as possible so you don’t have a smaller insert floating around inside of a bigger duvet cover. So if you’re planning to stick with your full sized comforter as the insert, go with a full/queen duvet. But if you’re planning to start over and get a new insert/comforter/duvet in a queen size to go with the new queen sized duvet cover, that would give you more covers for that nice spill-over effect.

Funny, we just did the same thing! For years we’ve been fighting with a too-small full/queen down comforter. Then our dog tore a hole in it durning some too-rough doggie playtime, oops. Feathers hemorrhaging everywhere! We decided to go king & it has been so much nicer! It’s easier to make the bed, too, since we’re not fighting all night!
I tried to get the West Elm pintuck duvet in white, but they didn’t have it when I went to order so I had to buy Target’s (non-organic) doppleganger. Of course, now WE has it again! Oh well! I hope you (and Ed) enjoy your new duvet!

p.s. We totally call our Ikea furniture by their Swedish names. My favorite is Jokkmokk, our dining room table!

I bought this same duvet cover for my queen in a king as well; it fits much nicer than our full/queen quilt we bought from WE. .(I was looking for something gender neutral that the hubs could live with as well.) If only I waited a week when they offered the additional 20% off. Doh! I was afraid it would sell out if I waited too long, which always seems to happen.
Now we’re in a painting dilemma. We’re planning on putting the house on the market, so we don’t want anything too taste specific. My husband wants to paint a small accent wall behind the bed that is similar to the blue-green in the duvet. Tough decision…
By the way, I squealed when I opened this post and saw that you had bought the same bedding. The hubs thinks I’m nuts, although he’s now used to hearing, “John and Sherry suggest…” In fact, we made a ‘quick’ stop at IKEA yesterday to pick up some shelves—which for some reason are difficult to find inexpensively elsewhere—when I popped off to my exasperated hubby that, “I bet John doesn’t rush Sherry through IKEA.” Okay, I’ll stop now. This is starting to sound stalker-ish. Looking forward to see what you two do with your bedroom so I can mooch some design ideas!

      Hey Julie B,

Ooh a teal accent wall behind the bed sounds lovely and dramatic- although if you’re putting your house on the market soon you might want to wait and do it in your future house since someone with a duvet that doesn’t match might not like it.

Good call on getting the king size. I always feel like the queen duvets are too small for a queen-sized bed. Once the insert is in there, it barely covers the mattress on the sides.

I took a second look at your duvet on the West Elm site and it’s called spruce, so the color may be showing up different on my monitor. It look like a blueish color and that’s the color of our bedroom walls a blueish. Spruce sound like it might be more greenish, regardless it’s very pretty.

I have a King sized comforter (not a duvet) on my bed too. The full/queen size is awful in my opinion- too small for a queen sized bed, because a full and queen size mattress are NOT the same thing! I don’t understand why they do that! To find a comforter that fits, you have to buy the king for a queen. :-( But I love the extra length it has on the sides of the bed, so I guess I can’t complain unless I’m talking about sheets…

This cracks me up. When I saw the new WE email in my inbox I clicked over there to check out their new bedding for Spring. As I was hunting around I thought “John & Sherry will be picking bedding soon…wonder what they’ll get?” Reason Im so interested is b/c Ive been wanting to makeover our master and then you guys mentioned you were going with colors I already have in there.
Anyways, I ordered the King Sized Duvet too(we own a queen sized bed). They were sold out of everything but twin and King. Im excited that we’ll have something that has enough to go around for both of us:) Our bed is white also and from Pier 1. Its the last big thing I bought before I quit my job there to be a SAHM. So Im really excited to see what you guys come up with for wall color, window treatments and accents.

West Elm duvet covers usually have duvet ties inside which are strings that you can tie around the corners of the insert to keep it in place. They also sell clips that do the same thing at Bed Bath & Beyond. Hope it helps!
