Young House Love » Shopping & Thrifting » The (Joss &) Main Event

The (Joss &) Main Event

So… our afternoon post is a few hours early. Surprise! Fancy meeting you here. Anyway, after teaming up with Joss & Main on one of our most entered giveaways (apparently you guys love you some Joss & Main), they asked us if we’d be interested in curating a sale event over on their site. Which essentially entailed doing some virtual window shopping (sifting through hundreds of items in their database) and telling them everything that we loved, which would then make up a “Young House Love collection” over on their site.

Uh. Let me think about it. YESSSSSSS!

Joss Main Collage

Never in a million years did we think that the title of “curator” would ever be used to describe us. Except maybe Curator Of Too Many Pins On Pinterest for me and Curator Of Too Many Soda T-shirts for John. Of course we screamed yes while holding hands and jumping up and down calmly told them we were game as any proper “curator” would do, and promptly called our parents to beg them to buy something small, like it was some elementary school bake sale that we were worried would flop.

But seriously, getting the opportunity to open up a little virtual decor store of sorts over there for the next 72 hours is the stuff of dreams for me (which usually also involve Nate Berkus, Eric Northman, and fried oreos). And although we didn’t set the prices ourselves, we did our best to find a variety of items in a nice wide price range (from under-$25 accessories to $250+ furnishings). So without further ado, here’s just a part of our little collection that you can find over at Joss & Main through October 6th (there’s a lot more over there). If you’re not already a member, just click here for an instant invite (so you don’t get wait-listed). Then you can find your way to the sale by clicking here:

Joss And Main Board

Oh and because we like to be 100% transparent with you guys, it’s Joss & Main’s protocol to offer a small commission to the folks who curate sales on their site (and a small referral fee, which is actually available to any Joss & Main member). So it’s just like any other side gig that helps pay the bills, like writing magazine columns or our book (more on those here) except more fun. Way more fun. Speaking of fun, what would you select if you could “curate” your own collection? Typographic prints & maps? Punchy fabrics a la Amy Butler? Faux books & magnifying glasses like the “Library Decor” section at HomeGoods?

HGoods Library Decor

Oh man, that picture never fails to crack me up. Yes ladies, that man is all mine.

I just bought the set of Alexis lamps. We are so excited! We recently bought our first house and just finished painting our bedroom (so we can finally move out of the spare bedroom) and these will look great in there.

I was so excited about the sale. Told the man about it and he said “are those the people with burger??” My non-decorating husband-to-be is catching the decorating bug thanks to John being an example of being so involved (that might sound creepy – don’t mean it to be!)

My great uncle was the “curator” of the Harriet Beecher Stowe home for over 20 years. Funny, I’ve never met another “curator” before. Until now:)

Also, what in the world is a “fried oreo”?? Please do tell!!

Ok you found on Pinterest did you actually search for a fried oreo please dish and explain???? We have a fall festival here in Indiana and there is fried everything. It is going on this week and of course they have Oreos, twinkies (my daughters fave) chocolate chip cookie dough and this year they have fried kool-aid????? So was just curious how you stumbled upon fried oreos. Have you had one yet?

Also bought the map! I was this close to buying the banana but passed =( great pics loved it all hope you do it again.

The fish pitcher (AKA “Gurgling Cod”) is a popular old-school New England wedding gift, as some folks have mentioned. When my sister-in-law married into a Boston family, they got one as a gift from Shreve, Crump and Low which is supposedly the Boston equivalent of Tiffany’s (http://www.shrevecrumpandlow.com/gifts/list_g.aspx?cat_id=66). The pitchers make this hilarious glug, glug, glug sound when you pour the water out, which cracks me up to no end (especially if you are having a formal dinner with the silver and candlesticks etc. when you use it). When I got married I really, really wanted one — but the store was only selling mini ones online at the time and we didn’t live anywhere near Boston. So I am the proud owner of a mini 16 oz Gurgling Cod, which is totally impractical and only fills about a glass and a half, but still very entertaining. So fun to see a Gurgling Cod pop up on this blog! To anyone who is keeping one of these in their box-of-what-were-they-thinking-wedding-gifts, some people actually really like/use these. Don’t knock em till you try it!

Joss & Main is owned/run by CSN.com. All items that are available in the sale can be found there (though slightly more expensive). They have a new name not CSN, but when you type it in it will send you to their shop!

Just checked out Joss & Main for the first time. Congrats YHL! Very cool. I’ve been saving for a drum pendant to replace our ugly, light-less family room ceiling fan. Had my eye on the new one from West Elm until I saw your layered shade Seeri Pendant today. Hard to tell from that photo. Do you think the screw that holds the light cover onto the shades is brass? What does the top part that meets the ceiling look like? Also, is the outer shade more white than natural, do you think? Last question … can I hardwire this pendant into the ceiling without a special kit? I hope you may have time to answers these questions. I’d really love to buy this light. Thank you!

So sorry we don’t have more of the inside scoop – I just know as much as you know! Haha. I would guess the entire thing is brushed chrome and black chrome since that’s the description (it does look brass but maybe it’s just the picture?). I would also guess it’s hardwired (no kit needed, if it’s a plug-in it usually indicates that) and it describes the outer shade as “translucent” so I would guess it’s really light and sheer so it’s probably creamy white looking. Hope it helps!

Paradise…Hmmm…it’s beautiful for sure! But, trying to find items to fit very small apartments (and an even smaller budgets) can be trying at time. Good thing I can just walk a couple of blocks to the usually warm and sunny beach to de-stress and get some perspective! :o)

I must say it’s taught me to be a very good furniture designer and am lucky enough to have a friend with the carpenter skills (and tools) to pull off my designs. Much like what you have done with found/purchased items as the building blocks to creating the pieces you need. The cabinets to desk transformation rocks!

So sorry about that! We’ve heard from others who already got their items, so perhaps some of them were more on-hand than others? I think they listed the shipping dates for each item before you placed you order and I believe they stick to those, so perhaps you didn’t see that it would take a while for certain items to process/arrive? Either way, so sorry for the delay! We wish we could send stuff right over, but we just selected items for the sale and they handled the rest.
