Dog And Baby Christmas Card Ideas

Anyone can make this photo Christmas card – as long as they have a dog and a baby. And as we head into the holiday weekend, we’re looking forward to watching “the kids” unwrap their presents (yes, Burger gets some too), gorging on goodies, and spending time with family and friends. But before the festivities officially begin, we wanted to take a moment to say HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you guys and share our little family Christmas card.

Xmas Card Final

The image above was the card we sent out to our family and friends (in case you can’t see, the text reads: “Hope you get your mitts on everything that you want this season“). This is the template we used through Snapfish (we just provided the pic and the wording of the note and they printed 40 5 x 7 cards on matte photo paper & provided envelopes for each one to the tune of around $25 thanks to a coupon code that we googled around for).

Getting the shot was a bit more involved than our previous years’ cards (which starred Burger as a reindeer, a kiss-monger, and a big brother in waiting) since we had a dog and a baby to work with this time (everything from getting Burger to actually wear his trapdoor sleeper to keeping both of our models in place was a bit of a challenge). But we had tons of fun watching Clara try to lick Burger for a change (weird, but true). And since we know you guys love behind the scenes stuff, here’s our “set” of sheepskins in the ol’ den where we shot it in early December:

Xmas Card The Set

Notice the block acting as Clara’s stand-in while she was getting a diaper change? Oh and here’s a fun fact, Sherry actually photoshopped that bow on Clara’s head after we uploaded the pic since there’s no hair to clip a real bow to yet. Anyway, happy holidays to all! May your days be merry and bright- and may your chihuahuas (and other various family members) be held tight.

Update: You can check out all of our favorite holiday decor finds here – many of which are under $15!

Hey Sherry, my niece had no hair until she was about three, so my sister in law would put a dab of vaseline on her head and stick the bow to that. It worked out great and wasn’t sticky at all. Btw…cute, cute, card!!

Totally unsolicited advice here, but you can get thin ribbon, tie a little bow just like that & stick it on Clara’s head with a smidge of KY Jelly. Also weird but true:)

Are those the faux sheepskin rugs from IKEA or the “real” ones? And, the ones you use under your tree for the “skirt,” are they the small ones or larger sized ones?

Love the picture. Your daughter is so adorable!

    Merry Christmas!

We only own faux ones (which we used under our tree this year and for this picture). We gave all of our real ones to John’s sister when we learned they were the real deal. Hope it helps!

That is too cute! I know a friend who used to tape (!!!) bows to her daughter’s bald head, because she wanted to make sure no one mistook her for a boy. :-O

Clara is so expressive. Makes me laugh, as our little guy was very expressive as a baby, too. We used to get comments about it all the time.

Incredibly cute picture!! She is making the cutest face. And yes, my mom used the syrup trick on me way back in 1975. My daughter had no hair when she was a baby either…at Target one day a lady asked “Oh, is it a boy or girl?” as I looked at my child donning the enormous pink headband and bow on her head. HUH?

This is too cute! Funny fact: my older sister didn’t grow any hair until she was 3… so in the meantime my mom actually taped bows to her head for pictures and special occasions. (That was before those cute headbands w/ bows were invented).
I totally thought that’s what you had done before I read the photoshop explanation! I hope Clara’s hair grows in faster than my sisters :)

    Too cute!

Bow trick I learned from the nurses in the NICU — use KY Jelly. Since parents can’t be in the NICU 24/7, and they never know exactly when the photographers will be there, the nurses end up getting the babies ready and taking them for their pics.

An easy way to get bows to stick is to dab a little bit of K Y Jelly on the bow, let it ‘set’ for a moment or two (I blow on it, but I don’t know if that’s really necessary) and then put it on the babe’s head.

just fyi, you can use a dab of karo syrup on the bow to stick on your baby girl’s head. weird, but true. my mom did it to both me and my sister. this was before the stretchy headband phenomenon.

I love it! Burger has such a great older-brother-putting-up-with-the-silly-little-sis look.

There’s more than one photo of me as a baby with a bow taped to my head. My brothers had the opposite problem – Mom couldn’t bear to cut their golden curls until people started telling her how adorable her ‘daughter’ was.

I’m sure people have already told you this, but you can use elmer’s glue or karo syrup (i always used glue — less messy and sticky and easier to transport) to stick little bows on Clara’s head. Or you could always make a headband out of old stockings/tights and make a big bow/flower/pom pom for the top. You could make the flowers the size of her head if you like! believe me, I’ve seen them that big! But, she’s adorable all on her own! I wish I could squish her little cheeks! Hope that’s not too creepy.
