Young House Love » Our Second House » Day Fifteen

Day Fifteen

Yesterday marked two weeks of being in our new house, so we thought it warranted an updated glimpse into each room’s progress… or lack thereof.

On one hand we feel very accomplished for having already tackled things like painting Clara’s room, buying and assembling a new bed, removing a bunch of bi-fold doors, raising our shower curtain, and unpacking everything – especially considering we were tied up with family stuff for a few days over Christmas. On the other hand, we’re still feeling pretty unsettled. Most of the important stuff has found a place in our new abode (not that it will necessarily stay there for the long haul), but the house is still riddled with piles of things waiting for a home (think picture frames, tools, rugs, etc). Here are some of the rooms that are looking the most presentable so far.

The living room (aka the future dining room) is finally cleared of boxes and we even organized some storage in the base cabinets of those built-ins (although the objects on display are just shoved there, so don’t judge the arrangement just yet):

Day 15 Living Room 2

Here’s the kitchen:

And the family room:

Next we have the sunroom:

And Clara’s room (curtains are up, but there’s no art or new light fixture yet):

Day 15 Claras Room

Here’s the hall bathroom:

Day 15 Hall Bath

And the guest room bath:

The master bathroom:

And the main hallway:

Then there are the rooms that are semi-functional, but still feel pretty darn disheveled. Like our master bedroom (we have yet to organize the closet, work out a nightstand solution, purchase another dresser, etc):

Day 15 Master Bedroom

The office (see that pile of tools in the corner, yeah- they need a home):

Day 15 Office

And the laundry / mudroom (which is in desperate need of some more built-in storage and a few organizational solutions):

Day 15 Laundry

Then there are the close-the-door-when-people-come-over rooms that are basically not at all useful yet… and therefore have become dumping grounds for items in limbo. Like the guest room that we revealed this morning (who wants to stay over in there?):

Day 15 Guest Room

And the playroom / future kids bedroom (yikes- not so kid friendly yet):

Day 15 Playroom

So that’s how things are looking two weeks after moving in. Clearly there’s lots left to tackle and we’re actually working on a giant to-do list to share with you guys (and to help my type-A wife feel more organized). Then it’s off to Home Depot for some supplies…

Psst- You can check out Day One pics here, you know, just for fun.

    Hi John and Sherry,

Your new house is really coming together- can’t wait to read more about all your amazing transformations!! I am sure that I’ve seen it in posts before, but I really love your glass and metal coffee table in the living room (aka future DR). Can you please tell me where it is from? Husby and I have been coffee table hunting and it would be perfect in our LR.

    Thanks!

    Lise

      Hey Lisa,

That’s from a thrift store (for just $35 bucks) but we’ve seen something similar at potterybarn.com and on sites like coffeetablesgalore.com. Hope it helps!

    Great sunroom! :-) Amazing.
But extremly ugly kitchen and some wierd flooring in the family room.
And the ceiling tehre looks lower then the rest of the house…
    3 bathrooms? Great!
I moved a lot and had unpacked everything in the first 3-4 days, it would drive me nuts to live for weeks with boxes! Every lamp and picture was on latest one week after moving in.
But you have a baby and 3 times more space then I had and are so far very fast :-)

The new house will definitely lend itself to being opened up more like you guys have imagined. One possible issue – the different flooring materials. Looks like at some point the plank wood flooring transitions to parquet, and the kitchen has the 12×12 tile. Will you guys leave as-is or do some flooring projects to pull everything together?

We’re definitely going to refinishing the parquet and the various hardwoods in the same tone to keep them cohesive. And we’ll be adding something new in the kitchen that works with those refinished other floors. Someday…

      Hey Kerstin,

That’s from Target a while back, but I think they still have the same one or something extremely similar. Hope it helps!

The house is looking great! Congrats on so much progress during a busy time of the year. I am loving the rug in your office – looks like it would be soft for Clara and I am looking for that color – do you mind sharing where you got this?

      Hey Lauren,

We got that at the Pottery Barn outlet about a year ago. Maybe try ebay?

    Hi,
I have a very similar coffee table to the glass/metal coffee table you have in your future dining room picture. I was wondering what you’ll be doing with that coffee table- is it just hanging out until you find a permanent spot for it? Just curious!

      Hey Katy,

Yes, we love that table so much (an awesome $30 thrift store find) but since it’s not quite baby-safe and we’re not sure where it’ll go it’s just living there for now. Here’s hoping we find a place for it! You can see how we used it in our last house by clicking the “house tour” tab up under our blog header and clicking the “our first house” button. Hope it helps!

Just wanted to pop in and say how much I LOVE your new place! I know you’ve got a lot of plans for it, but it really is so much bigger than your old one. I can really get an idea of how much you’ll be able to grow into this house.

I’m a little late on this post, but photos of your hallway have been grabbing my attention and today I totally figured out why… it’s like an enfilade! Took me a week to remember the word and then I had to find a pretty picture!

    See this great post: http://www.cococozy.com/2010/12/weekend-photo-door-to-door-why-i-want.html
