Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Skull Ornamental Print

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Skull Cardboard Safari

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

  • PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
  • PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

My favorite Halloween costume was when I dressed up as Magenta from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of me in the costume and the one I have with just the makeup and hair is in a closet somewhere. I’ll have to look for it, lol.

One year, my co-workers and I dressed up as the Bridesmaids of Frankenstein. We each found/borrowed the most hideous bridesmaid dress we could find to wear. We painted our faces dead white, blackened our eyes and had blood dripping down our chins. We frizzed our hair out and put safety pins in as earrings. In a chair, we created a Bride of Frankenstein, in a wedding dress, with Frankie’s head under her arm. I wish I could attach a picture but I only have the hard copy.

I was always way blase when it came to Halloween costumes, but my brother… oh, my little brother! Halloween has always been his favorite day of the year. He was obsessed with Freddie Kreuger as a little boy and used to cut the fingers off of my mom’s gloves and duct tape her butter knives to them. LOL! We couldn’t afford all of the authentic Freddie garb that was out at the time (especially with my mom having to constantly buy herself new gloves ;), so my mom had this brilliant idea to slather cooked oatmeal all over my brother’s face and let it dry. He added a striped sweater, thrift store hat, and one of his homemade Freddie gloves and off we went! My brother was SO excited.

We went to one house where the lady opened her door, took one look at my brother and said, “who vomited all over your face, kid?”

My brother was completely crushed, and we never trick-or-treated at that lady’s house again.

I was almost eight months pregnant last Halloween, and made my own costume. I bought one of those kits with foam stick-ons (the ones you give little kids to decorate a pumpkin without a knife) and a tshirt. I dyed the tshirt orange and stuck a jack-o-lantern face on my belly. It was stupid cute.

This year, I’m aiming for our son to walk (he’s so close!) and if he’s walking, he’ll be a zombie. A little growling, a little stumbly walk? It’ll be perfect!

My best costume was the one I made last year–I was a chicken. I covered a white hooded sweatshirt with feather boas, made a red comb for my head, and used yellow rubber gloves for my feet. I got the idea from Martha, but hers was for a kid. Not only did I win first prize for best costume, two others (who borrowed it) won as well!

SKULL ME! My favorite costume was one from a few years ago that my very crafty friend Amie made. She was a crazy cat lady and she had some awesome SNL style mom jeans with little kitten stuffed animals sewn on and she carried a kitty litter scooper with little “poops” made out of tootsie rolls that she shaped and rolled in ground up cookies. It was disgusting and hilarious. best costume ever!

These prizes are so fabulous – I’ve been eyeing that skull wreath since you reminded us how awesome cardboard safari is a little while ago..

As for halloween costumes – I’ve never been too out there. Two years ago though my husband and I went as Debbie and Capt. Murphy from Sealab 2021. I even ordered orange and blue jumpsuits online and sewed on the white detailing. I’d say only 5 people got our costume but when they did, they were excited! We figured that if you didn’t get it, we didn’t care that you didn’t get it.

I’m a natural redhead so as a child I wanted to be The Little Mermaid. I remember my mom made a seashell bra and I had an obnozious sequined green fishbottom I wore with it- I thought I couldn’t be any cuter. Then I went through a couple year phase where all I wanted to be was a caveman (for 4 straight years!). Complete with a handmade leopard fur shift-looking dress, and fake bones from the craft store stuck and pinned into my messy, crazy redhair. Those were the days!

Strangest would have to be when my mom dressed me in a black sweatsuit, which she had lovingly stitched fake fall-leaves all over in a dramatic garland-type-look. She then made a sort of wreath of fall leaves for my head. I was “Fall”. Like the same way someone would be a snow queen or something? Except I was an awkward 11 year-old with a wreath of plastic orange leaves.

My mom thought I was adorable.
