Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We’re conscience of leaving lights off when not in use, unplugging household items, leaving the shades closed during the summer to keep the house cool (and because we don’t have A/C to turn on), using re-usable grocery store bags, neighborhood just initiated a recycle bin program in our neighborhood and we’ve been diligent about getting everything that can be recycled into that bin! :)

I helped to get people recycling at work too – we now recycle our paper, cans, bottles, etc. We’ve also cut out the use of styrofoam cups by having everyone use the glass mugs at work instead.

I wash my hair with baking soda and apple cider vinegar. It’s super cheap, safe to wash down the drain, and isn’t full of awful chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate or parabens like other hair products. I also do most of my house cleaning with those same two ingredients!

While we’ve always recycled, I’ve become even more aware of everything we throw in the trash (or “destined for the landfill” as Whole Foods labels it) … so I call the Veterans for curb-side pick-up of anything I think someone else might be able to use.

One way we are trying to be greener is cutting down our waste. We’ve managed to get down to one bag of garbage a week, but our recycling bin was overflowing! So our new goal is to not buy packaged food.It does take pre-planning, or getting reeeeeeally creative with meals, but it’s easy when actually shopping to just not buy the packaged item. Cheaper too.

Green me! (please?) I try to shop only at thrift and consignment stores for clothes, shoes, furniture, and housewares. I can always bring home something unique (or give something old a new life by repainting, recovering, or repurposing), and every purchase that I make keeps something out of a landfill.

GREEN ME! My green philosophy has evolved to encompass reducing waste or trying to keep from creating more of it. I’ve always been a recycler, but now I’m also addicted to re-purposing things from around the house instead of buying new ones (glass vase = kitchen utensil holder next to the stove). And don’t get me started on my love of Craigslist, where one can buy practically-new furniture or kid gear (hello my “new” West Elm desk, and son’s “new” car-shaped walker) for way off the list price.

GREEN ME! You guys are my new favorite blog!

As soon as we bought our house we put in Low E3 windows so we are rarely running the heat or air and that says a lot in Sacramento CA where the summer reach 112 degrees! My soon to be hubby started a compost bin and we have a garden year round and what we don’t grow we have delivered by a local farmers home delivery service. And my favorite one of all, we recently switched to environmentally friendly cleaning products!

GREEN ME! I keep everything plugged into power strips all over the house. That way I can isolate devices I’m using and turn off the power to all the items I’m not using. For example, I have a lamp, clock, and phone chargers plugged into the strip by my bed. At night I turn it on so I can charge my phone and use the lamp. When I wake up in the morning I turn it off so it doesn’t draw power all day. It really helps cut down on those draining devices that remain plugged in all the time when they don’t need to be!
