This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We reuse all of our jars, bags – any container, and use old coffee grinds as fertilizer for the roses. :-)
OMG I LOVE the candles! WANT! I have also never EVER won anything in my life, so um, needless to say, it would be puh-retttty awesome to win!

I used to think it was better to wash my car at home; then I read that doing so sends detergents and oil into the storm sewers and straight into the river, untreated. So I pay a little more to get the basic wash from a car wash; their run off is required to be sent to the water treatment plants. It may not save water, but it saves river life.

I keep a basket full of flour sack towels by the kitchen sink. We use them in place of paper towels for most things. My son spreads them out as “table cloths” for eating on the floor. I clean the house with them. Then, we toss them into the washer. Couldn’t be easier!

For the past 5 years, my husband and I have taken the bus from the suburbs to our place of employment downtown. It’s a great way to save on gas and insurance, plus, we get to spend time together during our commute… and sometimes catch a 30 minute nap! :)

My most significant change has been to recycle aggressively. I know I’ve reduced the garbage waste from our apartment 100-fold. Lucky for us we do not have to separate glass from plastic from cardboard – we would still recycle but this makes it infinitely easier (and inexcusable not to) recycle.
Jackie Smith says
GREEN ME! We moved out of our home during a major remodel, so as not to expose our 3 now 4 year old to all of the associated dusts, toxins, etc. We hope to be back in before the snow flies!
becca hancock says
GREEN ME!!! In order to save both money and waste, we eliminated paper towels and paper napkins in my home. I now use cloth diapers(I went a little crazy buying these before my son was born so I have lots)and now we actually use our cloth napkins instead of them sitting in a drawer.

GREEN ME! We just upgraded our 70 year old windows with new energy efficient ones.

GREEN ME! I made a bunch of fun, brightly colored cloth napkins and am trying to start using those instead of papaer.

Green Me! I started a compost pile last summer and have found it to be a very easy way to reduce my garbage output and create free fertilizer for my garden!

I’ve gone the cloth diaper route with my third baby and recycle as much as I can. When our house is done being built, we also plan on composting as much as we can.

We are very big into reusing and upcycling when possible, like using old apple crates for storage or building bathroom shelves from beautifully weathered wood fencing from our yard. We also try to use earth (and body) friendly soaps, detergents and cleaning products.

I’m actually an environmental grad student. The most easily adopted change that i’ve noticed among my peers was to completely cut out water bottles and switch to a sturdy metal/plastic water bottle (i like kleankanteens). Filtered tap water tastes just the same as bottled and saves you money (did you realize water bottles cost you more than gas?) and the earth from piles of thrown away plastic! I’d suggest “Tapped” if you are looking for an interesting documentary.

I re-use any sort of plastic tubs with lids (yogurt, cream cheese, smart balance, etc) as tupperware. I also cut up any old t-shirts to use as rags, keep my AC between 78-80, hang my clothes to dry and just fluff them in the dryer for 5-10 minutes to shake out any wrinkles, I find myself mostly taking cool showers since I do it after I run and I can’t stand to get under hot water. I sweep instead of vacuuming (until the dog hair gets outta control!). My efforts were rewarded on my latest electric bill, which was 39 dollars for an all-electric apartment.

We just got back from a trip to Portland, such an amazing city. From solar powered composting garbage cans, curbside composting pickup, biodisel buses, and many many more. Lovely city and can’t wait to go back.

We have recycled everyday items and tried to conserve water for as long as I can remember – but as of this summer we are trying to simplify our lives and be mindful of all we buy and bring into the house. it’s so easy to get into the “must buy more stuff” rut. Hope I win – Love the rugs!

GREEN ME! We don’t use chemicals in the house (as long as we can avoid them). We’ve found that most things can be cleaned with baking soda, vinegar, rain and sun.

Thanks! The latest little tip I have is to leave as little behind as possible and an employee of mine just taught me how to eat the core of my apple. Sure I could compost it but this is just as easy to do! Baby steps.

My fave green tip? Never throw food waste in the garbage! I use the really gross bits for compost (saved in the freezer until they’re ready to go outside), and the decent parts for vegetable stock (also stored in the fridge, separately, until it’s stock-making time). All this means I get to have awesome compost-dirt for the garden, tasty veggie stock for fall/winter soups (instead of paying $4+ per container at the store), and my garbage never smells! (That last one is truly a miracle in itself :)

We started an organic garden last year complete with rain barrel for watering & a nice big compost. We also gave up paper napkins.
And we also now use Norwex cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals.

We’ve been turning more and more “green” since the birth of our daughter – cloth diapers, breastfeeding, natural cleaners, organic foods, and the latest (and one of my favorites) is Unpaper Towels (reuseable cloth kitchen towels that snap together on a roll – faaabulous!)
Christina says
GREEN ME! We’ve been recycling and composting for 10+ years. Most recently, we installed a rain barrel (and am looking at a rain garden).

I recently made wool dryer balls to use instead of fabric softener or dryer sheets. It took a few loads before I got used to the way my clothes felt, but now I don’t notice a difference. They are still soft, and the wool balls decrease static and help dry a load faster. You can find lots of tutorials for making your own online and then use a Joann’s coupon to get the right kind of wool yarn for a big discount!

I just moved to Falls Church, VA — maybe not a place known for its green savvy, but certainly a walkable town with many local gems, including that farmer’s market that and I (and many neighbors) can walk to every Saturday morning year round! Not only am I cutting down on my driving and getting some much needed fresh air, I get to purchase fruits and veggies with a significantly smaller carbon footprint than those that I could buy at the grocery store (a little bit farther) down the street.

1) I am a cloth napkin devotee; and 2) I recently swapped my highly scented (and likely chemical-ridden) shower gel for a bar of handmade goat’s milk soap I found from a vendor at my neighborhood farmer’s market, and I am absolutely hooked! I’ve swapped all the soaps in the tubs and sinks in my home for the goats milk bars.

Our recycling trash can (same size as our pull-to-the-curb trashcan) is always overflowing, whereas we only have to take our regular trashcan to the curb about once a month. between recycling and composting, we have very little true trash.

I try to buy items with as little packaging as possible, and reuse packaging when it’s a must. I like using those adorable berry crates from farmer’s markets to package up baked goods for friends. Sharing is green, right? :)
