This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

GREEN ME! In our house we use reusable bags, these are
great!! I found out you can fit so much more than the
regular plastic bag!! We fill our water at the Grocery
Store and each family member has they’re one reusable
water bottle instead of buying tons of plastic ones!!
It works great for us!!

I have been using vinegar to clean many things in our home for quite a while, and I just recently switched to a vinegar, lemon and baking soda mixture for scrubbing the kiddos’ bathtub. No more nasty chemicals for their little bums :)

My husband and I have started using cloth towels instead of paper towels. We were big paper towel users, so this initially took a good deal of effort. Now I simply store – in a convenient place – cleaning cloths in every room of the house.

I’ve stopped using paper towels and have recently made my own laundry detergent. I’m also making my own mouthwash and making notepads with recycled paper.

Hil says
Green me! I bring regular silverware to work everyday with my lunch instead of using and throwing away the plastic forks they provide.
Missy says
Green me! I try to live a green lifestyle overall. I’m getting much better about bringing my reusable shopping bags every time. My latest change is that I’ve started composting this summer. It’s amazing to see how full my bin is and realize that everything in there would have previously gonen to waste, but now it will turn into great rich compost for my garden next summer!
Janel says
Green me! I just bought some eco friendly shower curtain liners to use, am working on swapping out some toxic house cleaners, and did a near 100% overhaul on all of my makeup and lotions that were chock full of parabens and other gross ingredients!

We have become so conscious of recycling that we barely have regular trash to put out anymore. Also, we recently bought a rain barrel that has saved us from wasting so much water.

One of the easiest green things to do is to eat your leftovers! There are so new dishes that can be created by using leftovers and you can reduce your total waste and save some green by getting creative with the extra food.
Sarah says
Green me, please! Paying bills online and getting bank statements via email is a great way to reduce paper use, plus it saves you a stamp and an envelope!
Jen says
Green me!!!! I love to recycle and encourage all of my friends to do the same. I try to reuse any old bottles and save them to use as vases for the flowers in my garden.

I’ve switched to the castile soap you recommended!

I have a ton of reusable bags that I take every where with me. You can fit so much in those things! I also have one big “green” water bottle that I use constantly. The plastic bags I do have get used for cleaning up kitty litter, and the leftovers of course get recycled. I’m also about to install a brand new AC unit that will reduce my energy usage by a hefty chunk.

What do we do? We use re-usable bags, almost always. Shop Farmer’s Markets. Avid Recyclers. I feel like I am almost at the hoarding point because everything has another purpose, I just don’t always know what it is.
Jenny M says
GREEN ME!! We have been utilizing the “free” section on Craig’s list to get rid of fixtures and pieces that we are removing from our new house. I it great that someone will get use out of our old rugs and light fixtures instead of them goign into the garbage.
Anna says
GREEN ME! I’m still setting up my own place and have tried to recycle as much as possible (buying used furniture, reusing my parent’s old furniture) and would love some help in keeping it up!

I save my scrap paper at work and at home, then cut it down to half or quarter sheets and staple them together to make my own note book for phone messages, to-do lists, etc. We also keep a stack of quarter sheets at home for notes…and for playing telephone pictionary (if you don’t know what this is google it and then play it at your next social gathering).

I save salsa and other jars to use as drinking cups and pen holders. Peel off the labels, stick ’em in the dishwasher, and voila!
Christina says

I have switched to resuable bags. It’s amazing how quickly those plastic bags would accumulate over a short period of time.
Melanie Scott says
GREEN ME!
I have been working for a while now on living more “greenly”. We have been hanging out clothes to dry outside on the clothesline. When running water in the sink, I always have the drain plugged & then re-use the water to water plants outside, etc. We are eating everything we purchased that week at the grocery store – even though it might take a few days! I use containers to pack sandwiches in for lunch rather than zip lock bags, etc. I recycle everything!
Megan says

The greenest thing I’ve been trying lately is to cook at home. I live alone so its an easy temptation to run out and pick something up or get something delivered. Its a lot healthier (and greener!) to make the effort to cook at home.

For me, the best way to be ecofriendly is to be organized. I bought a large trash can for recyclables only that I keep in my garage… right outside my kitchen door. I also keep my cloth grocery bags bundled in the back of my car so I can grab them anytime I need to shop!

I’m fairly green already, but I have been biking to work lately!

Going green in our house has been a slow and torturous process, mostly because of the out-dated and bureaucratically overcomplicated recycling policies of Chicago. We finally moved into a neighborhood that actually provides recycling bins in the alley along with the garbage cans. (That blue bag program was just not working out.)
So biking, and now, recycling!
