Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I’m trying to use less paper towels and also make lunch for the husband every day to avoid buying lunch.

Also, I’m trying to repurpose as much as I can, especially with tips and ideas from you!

I started keeping a little basket next to my sink filled with old cotton dinner napkins I’ve collected over the years. I use them instead of papertowels–saves money and papertowel waste! I just keep a little mesh bag nearby and stuff the dirty ones in there and take them up to the laundry each night.

Green Me! I took a page from your book and put a plastic bin for recyclables under the sink: no excuses not to toss any recycling in there, now, since it’s just as convenient as the trash can right next door. Plus, it gets those magazines and soda cans off the kitchen counter!

GREEN ME! On our recent weekend beach trip, the condo we were staying at did not have recycling. We drove one shopping bag (reusable of course), full of plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans, back home for recycling. This was all at the insistence of our elementary school aged boys!! Yes, they get it!

Green Me! We have made a lot of small changes but the easiest was changing every lightbulb in the house over to CFLs and installing “smart strips” on all our electronic equipment so it doesn’t use any electricity while not in use – wasn’t too expensive and we’ve seen a differnece in our electric bill.

The best one I have (and I’m probably not the first to think of this) is to put a watering can under my A/C condenser pipe to collect the water coming out of there. What used to collect at the foundation of the house now gets use with our plants.

Green Me! I am obsessed with making sure I recycle everything I can and I also bring my own bags to the store. If I don’t have enough reusable bags then I always use the plastic bags when taking our dog for a walk. I’m ready to step up in other areas and want to start being more green with our cleaning supplies.

So we also try to do most of our shopping at local farmers markets. I’ve researched and made a little print out calendar of farmers markets in the area and on which days to make it easy for weekly shopping.

Also instead of paper towels, we have a little basket of clothes next to our sink and use them. It doesn’t take up a lot of space in the washer/dryer and we aren’t wasting all that paper!!

Green Me! We recently renovated a house and purchased all energy efficient and water conserving appliances, faucets, toilets, shower heads, etc. I was concerned that we would not have enough water pressure but everything works perfectly. I like to think that I am saving water every time I do laundry or take a shower.

    GREEN ME!

I try to be green in lots of ways. We have 3 rain barrels on our little house; I use tote bags at the grocery store and Target (as well as when picking up our CSA subscription); we reuse almost every single paper or plastic bag from the store for odds and ends; we compost all of our produce scraps; we have a clothes line; I ride my bike all around town, including to work sometimes; I have an herb garden as well as a vegetable garden in my back yard; we just bought a dual-flush toilet and a water-saver shower head for our bathroom renovation.

I’m sure there are other ways, too, but that’s plenty to brag about!

Some easy things I do to stay green is use reusable bags at the grocery store, keep unused light off in my house and recycle, recycle, recycle! It’s so easy, I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it…
