This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I’m trying to use less paper towels and also make lunch for the husband every day to avoid buying lunch.
Also, I’m trying to repurpose as much as I can, especially with tips and ideas from you!

Green Me! Reusable shopping bags, recycling everything I can get my hands on, no more plastic water bottles and purchasing an electronic reading device are some recent things I’ve done lately in an effort to be more green.

Green Me! The Bay Area is so dog friendly that I can walk the dog AND get my errands done. Plus, my pup Barkley is now a pro at shopping in Nordstroms! (not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing for the pocket book though!)
Christina says
Green me! My new apartment has made it easy to be green- lots of windows mean I rarely have the lights on and never need the AC!
Cara D says
GREEN ME!
I started keeping a little basket next to my sink filled with old cotton dinner napkins I’ve collected over the years. I use them instead of papertowels–saves money and papertowel waste! I just keep a little mesh bag nearby and stuff the dirty ones in there and take them up to the laundry each night.

Green Me! I took a page from your book and put a plastic bin for recyclables under the sink: no excuses not to toss any recycling in there, now, since it’s just as convenient as the trash can right next door. Plus, it gets those magazines and soda cans off the kitchen counter!

GREEN ME! On our recent weekend beach trip, the condo we were staying at did not have recycling. We drove one shopping bag (reusable of course), full of plastic bottles, glass bottles and cans, back home for recycling. This was all at the insistence of our elementary school aged boys!! Yes, they get it!
Emily says
GREEN ME! We do all the usual…re-use bags, recycle everything we can, high efficiency appliances and energy saving light bulbs…I’m also trying to reduce my reliance on paper towels!

GREEN ME, please! our rain barrel has been a great way to conserve water (though we live in richmond, so it’s about empty after weeks with no rain). we use our own shopping bags as much as possible and recycle everything our local authority will accept.
Janna says
Green me! I recently added a recycle can next to our trash can tomake it easier for others in our house to recycle too- a small step but it’s working:)
Cathy K. says
Green Me! We have made a lot of small changes but the easiest was changing every lightbulb in the house over to CFLs and installing “smart strips” on all our electronic equipment so it doesn’t use any electricity while not in use – wasn’t too expensive and we’ve seen a differnece in our electric bill.
Jenn C. says
GREEN ME!
The best one I have (and I’m probably not the first to think of this) is to put a watering can under my A/C condenser pipe to collect the water coming out of there. What used to collect at the foundation of the house now gets use with our plants.
Kate Hunka says
greeeen meeee please! I work at a green hotel and we make sure to recycle almost everything, even the air!
Jenny says
Green Me! I am obsessed with making sure I recycle everything I can and I also bring my own bags to the store. If I don’t have enough reusable bags then I always use the plastic bags when taking our dog for a walk. I’m ready to step up in other areas and want to start being more green with our cleaning supplies.

I’m a native Oregonian, so I’m green by nature ;) My simplest green tip is use public transportation. We’re a one car family by choice and I commute on the bus – it’s easy, green and relaxing.

GREEN ME!
I am trying to get into a carpool/vanpool right now (YAY for Ride Finders in the Richmond area), I reuse things where I can (easy tip: old socks make great dustrags :D ), and I shop at garage sales and thrift shops whenever possible.
Emily says
GREEN ME!
I’ve gotten really good about remembering to bring my reusable totes to the grocery store and farmer’s market…and I’ve been recycling pretty much everything! I also tried to start a garden this year for myself, but my green (brown?) thumb failed me.
Janelle says
Green Me! We recently switched to cloth diapers (just on weekends, to accommodate daycare) for our wee one. A small step, but they all add up, right?
Jill M. says
Green Me! I don’t own a car!!!
Katie C. says
GREEN ME!
Switching one by one to all Green household cleaners and really trying to buy local (food) as much as possible.
Melissa says
GREEN ME!!
So we also try to do most of our shopping at local farmers markets. I’ve researched and made a little print out calendar of farmers markets in the area and on which days to make it easy for weekly shopping.
Also instead of paper towels, we have a little basket of clothes next to our sink and use them. It doesn’t take up a lot of space in the washer/dryer and we aren’t wasting all that paper!!
Alison says
Green Me! We recently renovated a house and purchased all energy efficient and water conserving appliances, faucets, toilets, shower heads, etc. I was concerned that we would not have enough water pressure but everything works perfectly. I like to think that I am saving water every time I do laundry or take a shower.

Nicole says
GREEN ME!
I try to be green in lots of ways. We have 3 rain barrels on our little house; I use tote bags at the grocery store and Target (as well as when picking up our CSA subscription); we reuse almost every single paper or plastic bag from the store for odds and ends; we compost all of our produce scraps; we have a clothes line; I ride my bike all around town, including to work sometimes; I have an herb garden as well as a vegetable garden in my back yard; we just bought a dual-flush toilet and a water-saver shower head for our bathroom renovation.
I’m sure there are other ways, too, but that’s plenty to brag about!

I save all those plastic grocery bags and use them to clean up after our dog and cat. I haven’t bought bags for that purpose in the longest time.
kimberly says
Green Me! I think of uses for every plastic bag that I am unfortunate enough to acquire… on those days when I’ve left my reusable tote bags somewhere else.
Heather says
GREEN ME!!
Some easy things I do to stay green is use reusable bags at the grocery store, keep unused light off in my house and recycle, recycle, recycle! It’s so easy, I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t do it…
