This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Besides the norm of recycling all that we can, using cloths to clean instead of paper towels, using all the home made or natural cleaning products…we have gotten lots of use out of compost we just added recently! Next up is a beautiful rain barrel! :)

GREEN ME
I’m one of the presidents of the Parents’ Club Organization at my son’s elementary school and it was time to choose a new holiday sales fundraising company since the company we used to use, a popular wrapping paper & chocolates company, was closing its doors. Being a green school, we wanted to choose a company that was environmentally friendly. After extensive internet searches and comparing all our options, we decided on Greenraising. We fell in love with the products and the company philosophy. We’re excited about it!

GREEN ME! We’ve been trying to really think about packing and product packaging for our kids school lunches. What – if any – containers to use and for what food? Do we really need zip locks or can we use a bento box? Little steps.

I try to be as green as possible-recycle, use everything, reusable grocery bags, etc.

Little tips for greener living…
-Fill a heavy-duty ziploc w/ water, and place inside your toilet tank to reduce the amt. of water going thru
-Clean with vinegar! I use 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar, and I use it for everything…a few drops of grapefruit essential oil in the kitchen, and lavender elsewhere. Cleans glass, chrome, tile…it even disinfects when you use it correctly. Promise it doesn’t stink!
-Check for the recycle arrows on packaging and recycle EVERYTHING you can.

I make my own laundry detergent – one batch every 3 months or so (super easy! just 1/2 cup borax, 1/2 cup washing soda, and 1/3 Fels-Naptha bar, grated, all mixed together with a few drops of orange essential oil) and switched from dryer sheets to a ball of used (clean) aluminum foil. So cheap, no waste, and no lugging home bottles of detergent that are expensive and are mostly water anyway.
Love the site – keep the good ideas coming! Thanks!

I do appreciate my Brita water filter. Plus, my re-useable shopping bags are quite handy in not having to figure out what to do with the grocery store bags, it just makes sense.

We use cloth diapers also, recycle everything possible, turn the temp up (air conditioning) or furnace down when gone and turn all lights & electronics off at night or when gone from the house.

We drive a hybrid, use green bags, reuse plastic produce bags and clean with green products. Might be extreme to some, but I hate styrofoam so much that we pack ceramic mugs when travelling. Got that idea from another travelling couple.

GREEN ME – I bought camel back bottles for the whole family. We used almost NO plastic bottles this summer (compared to past summers ). That’s one of the things we are trying to do!
Katie says

Though I haven’t made any big changes, I try to still do little things. I never ever buy plastic water bottles anymore, and I use environmentally safe cleaning products. Vinegar and baking soda work wonders!

I live in Portland, Oregon where everyone prides themselves on being very green….I make sure to pay attention to my recycling, as long as purchasing as many green-friendly household items as we can. We make the effort to do things “the green way” as much as we can :)

GREEN ME!
My husband and I bought our first house last year. We switched all the lightbulbs to compact fluorescent, and bought no voc paint. We hope to work on other things as money allows, but there is sadly a lack of green businesses in our area…small military town!
Grace says
Green me!
I am very conscious about what goes in the trash and what should be recycled. I also bike to school rather than drive! Even if it’s raining, I just grab my 100% recycled umbrella and rain boots and walk!
Anna says
Green Me! My tiny contribution to the green movement is taking my coffee cup to our local coffees shop for a (cheaper!) re-fill.

Green Me…I have a reusable sandwich wrapper, and I take my lunch to work everyday in a cute canvas tote.
Jessica Vibberts says
GREEN ME! We love to get Gelato from a local shop. They give serve it cute little hard plastic bowls in fun colors that are the perfect size for my 2 year old’s yogurt, snacks, and cereal. I can’t believe they expect people to throw these things away!
Erin Morrison says

I try to reuse/recycle purchased items whenever possible. Jam jars become great sugar canisters or even double as tupperware. Coffee cans are great to store craft materials, wooden tea boxes can transform to jewelry boxes, the possibilities are endless!
Erin in Austin,TX says
GREEN ME!! I use the old dog/cat H2O to water the plants. It gets pretty hot here and requires fresh, cool water for the pets, so I use the old stuff to help the scorched plants outside:)

This year I started making all the kids PJ’s out of 2nd hand sheets (reg. cotton and flannel) found at garage sales and Thrift stores.
Margaux Laughlin says
Green Me! After my husband’s 92 Toyota broke down last spring, we decided to pass on the $2k repair bill and instead share my car. We each trade off taking the bus or biking to work 2-3 times a week. So we saved money, get more exercise, and get to feel good about being “green.”

Megan Campbell says
Green Me PLEASE!!!
Dee says
GREEN ME!
I’m sure everything that I do to be “green” has been mentioned already but for me the biggest thing is actually recycling paper, plastic and glass. This is a somewhat bigger deal for me than a lot of people because I live outside of city limits so I actually have to take my stuff (already sorted) to the recycling plant. It is not nearly as easy as my friends who just put their recycling out with their trash but I think it is worth it!
