Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We just replaced our very old furnace with a newer, more efficient one. We use the clothes line all summer and int the fall. We buy second hand almost always — clothes, furniture, tools, etc. We pack out lunches in reusable containers and use cloth napkins. We never buy paper towels.

I love reading everyone’s ideas! Thanks for a fabulous give away.

I’m a big fan of cloth napkins. We pick them up on sale at places like World Market or TJMaxx in colors that match our dining area (and sometimes that don’t). Unless we have guests we don’t usually wash them after every use, especially when we just use them to wipe the corners of our mouth, and when we do wash them, they’re easy enough to just toss in with a regular load of laundry. Bye bye paper napkins! (Plus they add great color to the dining table!)

    GREEN ME..

I’ve become a recycling madwoman in the past few months. My city switched from the little recycle container to the LARGE trash can size container. So, that really motivated me to start. BUT, I didnt have space for another trash can in my house… I already hated the sight of my trash can. So we purchased a pull out trashcan and recycle container for our cabinet. I love it and it saves floor space bc I dont have to have a trash can out and I am recylcing like crazy!!

Loving my 2010 Prius. It felt liberating getting rid of my German sportscar which got an astounding gas guzzling 11 mpg. Not only has buying a Hybrid made me more aware, I’m also walking a ton more and paying attention at the grocery store to buy local.

I do the usual recycling of bottles, paper, etc., as well as the reusable grocery bags. When we do have to use plastic bags from the grocery store, we get our use out of them by putting the kitty litter waste in them.
I also just “recycled” some of the clothes in my closet and donated them to a Women’s Home in my county, who helps women find jobs and nice clothes for their interviews and work.

Along with the usual things like taking canvas bags to the store (any store – grocery, target, mall, etc!) and recycling everything I can, energy efficient light bulbs and all that jazz, I catch rain water in a bucket on my balcony to use for watering plants inside! I also get to walk to work!

    Green Me…pretty please…

I refuse to get a dish-washer. I’ve got two-hands. I can do my own dishes. Does that count?

My husband and I share a car. (We work a few blocks from each other…that helps). Before we moved I used to walk to work (because I’m cool like that).

I make envelopes out of candy/cereal/food boxes and wrapping paper when I write to friends…and stuff.

    And the list goes on…

Lately I’ve been buying a lot of my clothes at our local thrift store. I can’t tell you how many chic vintage items I’ve found there on the cheap that fit me like a glove. Plus, it’s fun to pull out the sewing machine and try my hand at breathing life into pieces that are past their prime, a la Marisa Lynch at http://www.newdressaday.com .

We do lots of green things around the house. I use steam cleaner instead of chemicals, it disinfects is easy on the earth and the lungs. Use cloth napkins instead of paper ones, I read books, magazines, and the newspaper on my iPad and keep a food scraps compost bin in the kitchen for eggshells, banana peels and whatnot. We also shop locally and try to stay away from prepackaged foods. That cuts down on a lot of waste and the gas it takes for produce to get to us.

I think my attempt is to try and reuse items during DIY. I was able to salvage my entire 12 x 16 back deck by just replacing one post, sanding and resealing. Inspector said it probably only had a year left in it, but that one long day of work has had it going for two years longer now and I don’t see any rotting wood yet!

Our first-grader, after joining his school’s Earth Club, inspired us to step up our recycling efforts beyond paper, glass and aluminum cans. We’ve been better now about recycling plastics when we can, and reusing when it’s more difficult. We collected a few of those little single-serving fruit and snack cups and they make excellent reusable mini-bowls for homemade gelatin or yogurt cups, or even for mixing paint for art projects.

My husband and I just got married at the end of July — our wedding was as green as we could make it. We went the recycled and local route on most things — my wedding gown was used, our table decorations were locally grown flowers and family photos in recycled frames, and the favors were CDs packaged in recycled paperback sleeves (just to name a few).

I started composting everything possible about a year ago and it’s been amazing. It’s drastically cut down on my trash output, takes very little time and effort, and meant that when my neighbors and I started a garden a few months ago, we had all the free, organic fertilizer we could possibly want.

I also, ditched my laundry detergent for Trader Joe’s all natural liquid detergent, which happens to be half the price of my old non-eco version.

It’s hard to pick just one thing, but I love to garden. It’s so much work, but when you get something for your efforts it’s well worth it. Plus, we try to buy locally when we can… it supports local businesses which is great for our community, and things don’t travel quite as far which is less gas and pollutants!
