This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We recycle and compost. And we have a vegetable garden.

I finally started recycling after I realized how much paper my daughter was bringing home from Kindergarten. It’s a small tree!

Hmmm…nothing new lately, but we reuse just about everything!
Leslie says
GREEN ME!! I recycle everything that we are allowed to recycle. I also clean with rags instead of paper towels.

We live in a big city, and didn’t know how we would compost all our old food. We found a great way is by just a small bin with worms! It doesn’t smell at all (in the winter we have to keep it inside a closet) and doesn’t take up too much space. In the spring we have a big batch of composted soil to mix in with the plants on our balconies!

I went a step beyond reusable shopping bags and bought these wonderful reusable produce bags – they go with me to the grocery store AND the local farmer’s market. It made me realize how many little plastic produce bags I previously wasted at the grocery store. You can find them here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/LoveForEarth (I’m not being paid to endorse them!)

I moved a couple months ago, and was delighted to discover that the locally-owned grocery store just down the road actually gives a 3-cent per bag discount for using your own reusable bags. I already used reusable bags on a regular basis, but it’s just nice to have a teeny tiny economic incentive too. :)

Green Me!! I try to walk places as much as possible.

GREEN ME! Two years ago, we opted to join a local Community Sponsored Agriculture program so we only eat local, sustainable, organic fruits and vegetables. It’s my favorite way to be “green.”

Even though I drive a hybrid & live close to where I work, I still feel like I can always be doing more! Recycling bottles, cans, paper & plastic means that we barely throw away one trash bag a week.

It’s a small thing, but I keep a canvas tote in our office and drop in all of our read magazines, mail, etc. and whenever I head to the farmer’s market (which happens to have a HUGE recycling center in the parking lot) I pick up the (v. heavy) bag and recycle them. It’s simple and doesn’t cost a dime, but makes me feel so much better than just tossing out 10+ magazines a month.

This past weekend I spray-painted all our bathroom hardware for an updated look, rather than replacing.
We also quit our Costco-pack-of-water-bottles-every-2weeks by going Brita pitcher. so easy.
Also found that used plastic grocery bags (on the rare occasion I don’t have my own tote) are excellent for stuffing into tall boots so they don’t flop over and lose shape in your closet (long-term benefit – boots are made for walking longer!)

My husband and I are currently in the process of buying our first home (yay!) so we made sure that all the homes we were looking at were easy biking commute distance away from work & school. Also, the house we’re buying (again, yay!) has very inefficient ceiling heat so we have scheduled an energy audit and are getting bids on switching to either a ductless or ducted heat pump system, updating to a heat pump water heater, and have already invested in energy efficient/insulating window covers.

I no longer purchase water bottles- I use aluminum, fully recyclable, containers. Another simple thing I do is leave reusable grocery bags in my car so I have them whenever I run errands and avoid getting things put in plastic bags!

Yesterday I took my 4th grade class to a community garden and I am so excited to say that they were inspired to “go green”. We started a recycling program in our classroom and hope to reach out to the entire school :)

Our mantra around here is “reduce-reuse-recycle!” We started using cloth napkins exclusively last year after my kids started thinking up simple ways that we could help reduce our waste. Some people said it wasn’t helping since we then had to wash all of those napkins… but adding a few napkins to each load of laundry takes up hardly any room at all!

We recycle as much as we can. That is are little piece in this world. We do most of our own work around the house, except for electric and major plumbing even. Every little bit helps. ;-)

GREEN ME…
We have a such great sun exposure that we rarely need to turn on the lights. We can go the whole day, in every room of the house without light…It also works miracles for the AC unit too. In the heat of the day we close the shutters on the back end of the house and it stays remarkably cool!
Devon says
Green me! Recycling is good, but reducing (not generating the boxes/packaging/paper/whatever in the first place) is better!
Shannon P says

I always carry a reusable bag in my purse. I use it when I buy things at the mall as well as the farmers market or grocery store. I also keep a stash of bags in my car and make myself return to the car to get them when I forget to take them into the grocery store with me. It’s little, but it keeps me from using plastic bags!
melanie says
Green me! We use colorful wine bottles and interestingly shaped beer glasses as vases, and collect the corks to make trivets. We also use empty facial tissue boxes to stuff our plastic bags into until we can take them all back to the store to be recycled.

I avoid bottled water at all costs, replaced just about every single light bulb in our house with cfls, keep the temp in our house up in the summer and down in the winter, recycle everything we can…
It’s pretty run-of-the-mill stuff as far as green goes these days, but it’s something!

My green tip is to buy some reusable bags to use in kid lunches. My kids are 4 and 6 and once they started school (preschool was 4 years ago for my oldest) I started to realize the ridiculous amount of zip lock bags that I was using for their lunches. We now use the fabulous WasteNot Saks at reuseit.com and the super cute snack and lunch bags at resnackit.com. I can’t tell you how many parents have asked me where I got them so that they can get a couple for their kid’s lunch.

I am loving re-using glass milk bottles as water bottles. Let’s see…Also using “junk” to paint on and use to make art projects or gifts. (leftover wood or boxes). Also, shoeboxes just organize pantries so well.
Please Green Me! I could use it!
