Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

Green me! I live in an off the grid house. Our power up all of our needs, including our hot water. We live next to an amazing mountain and because of solar energy we can live in area that has no access to the grid.

I use reusable bags everywhere I can… but my newest and biggest change is that I was tired of wasting paper towels cleaning up after my toddler. So I now have a basket of washcloths that are only used on his face and hands, and then a different basket of the dirty ones. I only have to wash them once a week and I don’t feel guilty tossing paper towels!

I’m an art teacher and I find that the best supplies are the recycled/reused kind. Toilet paper rolls can be used in about a million projects. Large yogurt containers are great for washing brushes, and small containers are great for holding paint. Not to mention, you save a significant amount of money by not buying those products from an art supply store.

I always use easily-biodegradable doggy poop bags to pick up after my two poo-machines.

Also, I was new to east-coast summers this year, but I always turned off one of our a/c units (the one in the bedroom) when I left the house, even in the greatest heat. The dogs needed the other a/c to stay cool, but we would just cool off our bedroom when we got home.

I’ve actually been eating more “green” in the last few months. Switching my diet to mostly vegetables and only whole foods. Eating only meat from grass fed cattle and free range chickens.

It’s not necessarily helping the environment, but it’s helping my family’s health… and now there is one less consumer buying animals that are artificially raised in horrible conditions.

Weopted for the smallest size trash can possible so we would be forced to recylce and compost (required by law here) as much as possible.

I carry a reusable grocery bag in my purse at all times. It’s one of those silky, thin fabric bags that rolls into a small ball. I find I use it very often and is especially handy when I have left my stash of larger, bulkier bags in the car and purchase something unexpectedly.
I’m fortunate to live in Durham, NC (home of Duke University) and find it is a very green city with lots of focus on recycling.

    I really enjoy the blog!

I started using reusable grocery bags when I was living abroad in Ireland 8 years ago- Ireland charges 15c per plastic bag you take from the grocery store. Think how many people would bring their bags from home if that were the case here!!

On the other hand, I don’t bring my bags when we go to Trader Joe’s because we reuse their awesome paper bags as our garbage can under our kitchen sink. Saves even more plastic!

I re-use Ziploc bags because they are so handy but do not biodegrade. Just wash them out and hang them on a clothesline or prop upside down to dry. Sometimes I label them too. When I travel for instance, I put my bathroom items in a Ziploc. Because I don’t feel comfortable re-using this bag to carry food, I label it “bathroom” so I don’t forget.

I live in Seattle and we have a great recycling program. In fact, I save extra $ because I recycle so much that I don’t need such a large garbage can! I recently have become better at recycling food waste. It can now be collected in our yard waste bin and is used to create compost. It’s amazing how much I used to just through in the garbage and now recycle!

GREEN ME! I make my own baby wipes. I just googled for a wipes “recipe,” and it was very easy and saves us tons of money. Also, since my town doesn’t have recycling set up, I “recycle” some things by taking my used 2-liter bottles and toilet paper tubes to the local children’s museum since they always need them for crafts.

I’m proud to say that we now have far more recycling than trash each week. About a year ago I started being much more careful about recycling everything possible. I used to toss in the “normal” things: cans, glass bottles, milk cartons, and newspaper. I’ve taken it to the next level by being more aware of what I can recycle, such as aluminum foil, plastic toiletry bottles, everything cardboard, junk mail, dog food bags. A little more thought and effort made a huge difference! It also helps that we don’t have to sort our own recycling, which is nice since we can just have one big bin to toss everything in. On garbage day I’m happy to say that of our two trash cans, the recycling one is full to the top, and the garbage one is usually about one-third full. :)

GREEN ME! I have been sticking to the reusable bags, and diligently dropping of the plastic bags we do get (when we forget our reusable bags) at the grocery drop-off.

Chicago no longer has a pick up recycling service so we have to drive our recyclable items to the drop-off center. Our next big project is building a trash/recycling bin to separate everything and make our lives easier.
