This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

“GREEN ME”
Oh, how fun! :)
Let’s see, we do a lot of green stuff, composting, rain barrels, baking soda and vinegar for cleaning products, cloth shopping bags and napkins and dishtowels, etc. One thing we do that saves water is of course changing over the faucets and shower heads to be low flow, and we also added a filter to the shower head, but the big thing we do is save the cold water in the shower while waiting for it to warm up. It’s usually almost a bucket. I save that for the kids’ bath water, or water the house plants, or the garden in the summer.

I do love using all my reusable grocery bags. And I ask my family to bring over their plastic ones for repurposing.

I recently learned that at paper recycling centers they filter out stuff like paper clips and staples so now I don’t hesitate to recycle papers with these foreign objects in them. Maybe this is a well known fact, but I was happy to learn it :)

Our newest green venture: My husband and I are expecting our first baby this December and after a lot of research about the negative environmental effects of disposable diapers (they take 500+ years to decompose while sitting in a landfill, for example) we decided to do cloth diapers. We’re almost done collecting our stash and are excited to keep thousands of plastic diapers out of those landfills!

I always try to use my reusable shopping bags at the store. We also replaced our two A/C units over the last 2 years. The previous units were original to our 1977 ranch. We sprung for the new energy efficient models that will also net us a tax credit. My power bill this month was HALF of what it was last August!!
Katy says
Ooh ooh, GREEN ME! We use cleaned out glass jars (pasta sauce, olives etc) instead of Tupperware or ziploc baggies.

Going green? Throughout my childhood my family has always recycled and used a push mower (my dad always went on about the benefits of the push mower. It CUTS the grass instead of TEARING it) so I had that going for me as an adult. I’ve taken it a few steps further by buying organic linens, composting, buying organic makeup and hygiene products, and using earth friendly detergents and cleaning supplies. Can I brag how great it feels to clean and not choke yourself with fumes? I love it. Speaking of cleaning and going green? I now use biodegradable sponges. Sweet stuff.
For the future, I’d love to eventually buy a prius, gather enough glass water bottles to NEVER have to buy another plastic case of bottled water, and buy more green clothing and footwear pieces.
Going green, being green? Everyone who isn’t should be green with envy. It rules and makes you feel great.

Green Me. I opened up a farmers market and am doing my best to compost and recycle. It is very rewarding.

Green me! We’ve switched over to all energy-efficient lightbulbs and are lucky enough to live in a city that has both a recycling program and a composting program.

Our city doesn’t have its own recycling program but we found a great local private recycling company that provides weekly pickup. After almost a year of being the only house on our block with an extra grey can, we noticed that in the last couple of months our two neighbors on either side have also subscribed to the recycling program!

I’m usually trying to be as green as I can, in realistic terms – I’m also not about spending tons a money. The thing that pops in my head is that my husband and I have started using reusable totes to carry our lunches instead of buying lunch bags. :) It’s been nice for when we bring tons of food for lunch and dinner.
Tricia says

The green thing in my life that I’m most excited about are my home made rain barrels. I’m saving a ton on water and helping the environment at the same time. It’s only takes everyone doing a little to help.

We buy our son’s ‘new’ toys from a local list-serv that is a Parent’s List solely for the purpose of ‘handing down, or passing on’ toys that have been outgrown. Keeps toys (and packaging!) out of landfills and is economical! It’s basically like a toy-specific Craig’s List for our area.
Amelia says
Green Me! I have started saving my vegetable bags from the grocery (the little ones that you bring greens/onions/tomatoes etc) in. I store them in an empty paper towel roll that I cut in half, so that they stay organized and slip into my purse easily. We are in a CSA, so I re-use these bags when picking up our veggies every week. And, for a little YHL twist, I even wrapped the paper roll with some decorative paper so that it looks pretty as I’m doing my part to reduce, reuse, and recycle! :)

As the months go on, I’m phasing out all of those nasty chemical cleaning products in our house and using only Seventh Generation or Method.
That and I try to not eat meat at least one day a week to cut down on the environmental impact.

We recently switched from bleach based cleaners to natural plant based home cleaners. We’ve also bought no new furniture since we moved into our house last year, everything is second hand and gets a new lease on life at our homestead.

We have minimized (and almost eliminated) our use of plastic ziplock bags and plastic food storage containers. Instead, we put all leftovers and carry our lunch in glass Pyrex dishes with lids. They come in all different sizes…the small ones (approx 1 cup) are perfect for a lunch-sized portion of food! As an extra bonus, we never have to worry about chemicals leaching into our food when we toss our glass dishes in the microwave to reheat our food!

It pains me to dump a few of gallons worth of water down the drain when the dehumidifier in the basement’s bucket fills up, so I take it outside and water my veggies, herbs and shrubs. I can’t wait until we get a rain barrel so I can pour it in there when the plants don’t need it to have even more water during a drought (like this summer).

CRAIGSLIST!! We have been in our house for a little over a year and have furnished most of it with Craigslist finds! When we get tired of something we post to craigslist and let the recycling continue. It is so rewarding when someone asks where we got something and we say Craigslist for so much less than they would ever expect!
