This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

GREEN ME!! Like many others here, I always carry reusable tote bags with me to any store I visit; no plastic water bottles EVER; CFLs throughout my house; ceiling fans instead of A/C; no watering my lawn during the summer and I use corn gluten on it in the spring instead of chemical pesticides and fertilizers; composting; natural cleaning products etc., etc. I really am trying to change my life to be more sensitive to the environment!!

I’ve been trying to use vinegar around my house more and more instead of using harsh cleaners. I also add some to my laundry and it works wonders!

GREEN ME! GREEN ME! Love these eco finds! I try to buy eco cleaning products for the home..always use my reusable Enviro Sacks and other totes..and we luckily can recycle paper at our new house where our provider did not at our previous house where I would take it to the Paper Retriever bins at the local school!

I’m starting small on the eco-train, but I’m making the transition to environmentally friendly home cleaning products (just got Clorox’s Green Works dish soap yesterday, already in love) and keep my own cup, fork, knife, plate and bowl at work so I can avoid using the disposable varieties!

We love Community Supported Agriculture! In addition to grocery shopping at farmer’s markets, we support a local family-owned organic farm, which delivers a box of fresh fruits and veggies to us every Wednesday. Our friends envy our fresh, seasonal produce, and we’re proud to reduce our carbon footprint.
Keep up the inspiring work, Sherry and John!

We’ve been watching our produce better and using them or cooking and/or freezing them before they spoil to create less waste.
Thanks for another great giveaway YHL!

I started using reusable bags more often and when I forget them, I try to get paper bags when I can. I bought sham wow to use instead of paper towels. I’ve replaced my light bulbs with the new energy saving bulbs.
Things I want to do in the future when my boyfriend and I buy a house:
Get a compost bin. Have a clothesline in the backyard. Grow lettuce and other plants that my turtle will eat rather than buying it and having some go to waste.

GREEN ME! I put a second round of veggies in my garden and have been trying to buy more local produce to cut down on the traveling costs of most food. Composting and recycling plastic bags back to the stores they came from (and making sure to only cart reusable bags now) have also been high on my list of priorities as of late.

GREEN ME! We try to do many things to stay “green”, but one of the easiest?? My husband and I simply turn off all of our power strips connected to our entertainment area (TV, cable box, DVD playter, etc.) every night before going to bed. You wouldn’t believe the drain a left-on power strip can run a household on average. It’s like pouring energy “down the drain”. We can all do our part with that simple “click” to turn the strip off. So easy that it should be a crime NOT to do it. :)

I’ve started saving glass bottles when I’ve finished using up their products (olive oil, soy sauce, etc.). I just clean them out, and my collection looks great with flowers in it. I think I’m going to paint a few bottles this fall. It’s a great free decor resource!
Lindsay says

GREEN ME!! I splurge on dryer sheets, so in order to be a little more green, I reuse them. I will stick used ones in drawers and closets as air freshners. They also make really great dust rags. Just toss when you are done dusting!

we always use a water filter and run our appliances on their lowest-energy or lowest-cooling or lowest-heating settings. my husband thinks i go a little overboard, but every night before bed and every morning before i leave, i’ll run around the house unplugging things that don’t need to stay on!

We switched to Charlie’s Soap about a year ago. It helps our clothes stay nicer for longer. And when we do need to replace old clothing, our first stop is always the thrift store or rummage sales.

my 2 other green coworkers and myself placed a big paper box by each of our printers/copiers at work, and they get filled up quickly. we have to take them home ourselves and recycle, b/c my office doesn’t pay the extra for recycling! doesn’t that stink?
and here’s a green post i did back in may if you are interested in taking a peek:

I recently discovered an awesome co-op grocer store here in San Francisco that has tons of stuff in bulk, along with really nice glass containers to take it home in. Now when we run out of olive oil, vinegar, honey, peanut butter, or any type of dry goods, we just take our existing containers with us and refill them. Cuts down on plastic container waste and the glass jars/bottles look so much prettier!

BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
ANSWER: We compost all the food we can and recycle as much as we possibly. About every two weeks or so I go through closets and take stuff out to donate. I do my best at buying local and organic produce, meats and dairy and I try to buy items made in the states so as to avoid contributing to pollution. I’m getting ready to paint a couple of rooms and will use Low-VOC or No-VOC paint; we are also getting ready to use spray foam insulation on the attic floor. I use re-usable bags for all my shopping. I don’t buy bottled water. We also have an efficient water heater and have been using green products for personal care as well as dish washing, hand washing, laundry, etc. I’m sure there are other things but I just can’t think of them right now.

GREEN ME!!! I go green by recycling and using canvas bags when I shop so we don’t use plastic bags!! (you can fit way more in those than in the plastic)
Jennifer says
Green me!! I also use reusable bags and when we forget, we try and recycle the plastic ones. We just recently started recycling at home and wow! I never knew so much stuff could be recycled. We were just looking for a new bedroom set for me son and instead of buying something different, we ended up painting the one he had. Turned out beautiful!

Since my husband and I are doing some serious budgeting (and thus I dwindled down my craft budget from a billion dollars to next to nothing per month), for most my crafts I re-use things from the house and yard. For example, for my fall center piece arrangement, my Mom gave me some old fall silk branches she wasn’t using in any arrangements, then I put them in a mason jar I had in my cupboard, then went out to my backyard and grabbed some small rocks (we are re-doing our backyard so it looks like a rock quarry currently), spray-painted them cream, and filled them in around the branches. Then to top it off, I had some long dried pieces of grass from different craft projects that I tied around the mason jar. It turned out really nice, but most importantly, it was free :)

GREEN ME! I use a Keeper – it’s an awesome, environmentally-friendly product (for women only). Google it to find out all about it! I also used cloth diapers on my son until he was potty trained!
Rebecca says
Green Me! I recycle just about everything possible, even toting things from the office in my purse to recycle at home. Also, I’ve been line drying laundry more often. Not earth shattering tips, but it’s the little things that add up I think.
