Fab Freebie: I Dream Of Greenie

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.

First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.

Green Nest Rugs

Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).

Green Nest Skeem Candles

But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.

Green Nest Bottles

Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.

Green Nest Garden In A Bag

So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:

  • PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…

Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We’ve an enormous garden (2,000ft x 2,000ft) and freeze and can our produce.

My youngest sister likes to tear up old t-shirts and crochet rugs out of them.

GREEN ME! This is an awesome prize! I love soy candles and I’ve been needing a new rug for our living room for a while.

    Eco-friendly tip:

Vinegar literally has 101 uses! I use it instead of fabric softener and it rids clothing of residue and makes them more fluffy, instead of add more toxic junk to the clothing and towels are way more absorbant! It’s great in the dishwasher instead of rinse aid-dishes come out sparkling clean. I highly recommend composting-ours is informal-a compost pile vs. a bin and it works great to keep loads of scraps out of trash bin. Bonus: The plants growing around it love the soil-they are blooming like crazy!

We just bought a couch the other day that has cushions made from soy! To be honest, we decided on the couch before we knew the soy part (it was at Haverty’s, as opposed to a store specializing in green furniture), but it’s a bit of a bonus.

I use empty large plastic bottles as watering cans for my plants…just fill them up and leave them near the plants so they are available when I notice the the plant looks a bit sad. I don’t have nearly the green thumb I wish I did.

I started buying eco-friendly cleaning products (Method is great!), holisitc dog food for all three of my dogs (Nutro Ultra Holistic Superfood — they love it!), and I keep glass jars from pasta sauce, pickles, and jam for storage jars around the house. :)

You have a very inspiring blog! Thank you. My husband & I moved from VA to TN recently and the condo we live in doesn’t have recycle facilities; so we collect plastics, cans, paper/cardboard & take it to Whole foods market for recycling. I rarely use plastic covers while shopping and when I have to I wash them & reuse it to store uncut, unwashed veggies from the market in my fridge. I also reuse old hand towels & washcloths as mops. I use ‘Ecotowl’ instead of paper towels & greens/salad boxes to put cleaner solution bottles in(to keep from dripping into the cabinet floor). we use cfls wherever possible.

    Green Me! Please…

I live in Asheville, NC (y’all should visit, if you’ve never been!), where – despite the sage words of Kermit the Frog – it IS easy being green.

I went vegetarian a year ago, for many reasons, but among them the fact that eating less red meat lowers my carbon footprint. Those methane-emitting cows don’t get my business… Asheville is a vegetarian’s paradise – which I am reminded of every time I leave town.

LOVE the blog. So diy-inspiring. Thank you for all you do!

My husband and I started with the basics (water purifier, using old plastic bags to clean up after the puppy) but when we moved, we stepped it up. Rather than buying new furniture (outside of a bed and tv stand), we got all used furniture from people who weren’t using it. Saved the environment from our purchasing tons of new stuff and saved US a lot of green! We did buy a new washer and dryer–but they’re energy efficient and use as little water as possible. I also work from home, so there’s a whole lot of gas saved (and again…money. who said being environmentally friendly wasn’t cheap? we’ve saved a bundle)!

I’ve been saving all the other “unrecyclable” plastic that curbside recycling won’t take and delivering it to a company here in town. This company takes the plastic and melts it down into plastic boards. They then make decking and picnic tables and chairs from the boards.

At home we recycle EVERYTHING that can be, and end up with only one bag of actual trash per week because of it. Added bonus!

And we always take our reusable bags with us to the grocery store. They’re so much better for packing food and easier to carry. And it’s obviously a smarter choice than the throwaway plastic ones (that can be recycled at most grocery stores by their main entrance)

Green Me! We have a shower that constantly leaks. Its a horrible water waster! We are going to rip it out and remodel very soon, but in the meantime, I like to keep my watering can (shaped like a pig, where the water comes out of his nostrils!) under the drip to catch water, and then I water my flowers with it. It makes me feel SLIGHTLY better about that dang shower!

I recently moved to a new city and had to find a new hair salon. I did some research and discovered a sustainable hair salon! Who knew these existed?

The salon sends their clippings to an organization that uses hair donations to clean up oil spills! The salon also strives to be a zero-impact salon by offsetting their CO2 emissions, washing linens in cold water, using efficient light bulbs, etc. They also partner with an alternative transportation organization nearby. Very cool! Oh, and I was very happy with my hair cut!
