This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

We compost our kitchen waste and add it to the garden as needed. I’ve got a little experiment going with one of those new Sun Chips bags – the compostable ones. We’ll see…

I’ve started using only one water bottle – I just fill it up using the Deer Park water cooler at work and I feel better now that I’m not buying cases of plastic water bottles every few weeks!

We recently started replacing most of our household cleaning
products with more eco-friendly options. Baking soda and vinegar work great for many cleaning jobs! No chemicals, less packaging and saves money!
Amanda says
GREEN ME!
I take the bus or train instead of drive to work.

Biking or walking, rather than driving.

We started greening things up a bit around here by installing a rain barrel and setting up a compost bin in the back yard. I never realized how much those food scraps add up!
Marium says

We have switched from using plastic bottles to a much better, more eco friendly and healthy option of filtered water. We recycle everything, try to minimize the use of electricity, carpool, compost and lots more!

I try to use re-usable shopping bags and drink my daily water using a steel canister water bottle (instead of plastic water bottles). I would use public transportation if is was available in my area.

I’m trying to catch the water used to rinse veggies, etc. to use for watering my plants. I’m also line drying now! Thanks for the drawing. :)
Je§ica says
GREEN ME! I compost and recycle and I notice that I have significantly reduced the amount of trash I put in the garbage. And now I have rich compost for my veggie garden. It’s a win-win situation.

This blog has REALLY inspired me to find little ways to create a greener home, while still maintaining a fresh, modern look! I just recently starting reusing empty glass beverage bottles for flower buds (like you did with the Izze sodas). I just love the look, and feel good about re-purposing such a beautiful piece that would have otherwise been tossed in the garbage!

GREEN ME!
My husband and I both the the bus to work and just last week switched all our home lights to energy efficient light bulbs.
Amanda says
GREEN ME! We’ve been recycling everything we can for awhile, but we recently swapped out every lightbulb we could, changed to a thermostat that we can cycle down when we’re not home and allows our electricity co-op to cycle it as needed to reduce load, and we carry nothing but Sigg bottles, refilled at home.

I make my own powder detergent! It lasts forever and you can get a simple recipe from tons of places online!

Green me! I bought a pack of Envirosax bags, which I learned about from you guys, and use them almost every day instead of getting plastic bags.

“Green Me”. We have replaced all of our light bulbs to the floursant kind, we recycle everything we can, I purchased a water thermos to use for my daily water consumption, and we keep our furnance at 66-68 degrees in the cold Minnesota winters. We bundle up with warm clothing and use blankets.

In my house we recycle, compost, switched to CFL bulbs, use gDiapers (http://www.gdiapers.com), have 2 dual flush toilets (that I shared with you guys a few months ago, and you posted!) and are working on starting a food garden. Nothing innovative, but it makes me geel good!
Meagan says
GREEN ME, please!
Hm, let’s see. Use Dr. Bronner’s for EVERYTHING, ride my new (cute!) bike to work, shop at farmers’ markets. And I was super impressed with a recent trip to Seattle at how green they are. I’m jealous that my friends get curb-side compost pick up. So cool!

I am also a train commuter. Everyday I make the hike from Baltimore to DC sans car!

We are installing one of those new-fangled tankless hotwater heater! WOOT! Not only will we save in terms of energy (since it only heats the water when you need it) but it is a space saver & (over the long hayl) a money saver as well. Gotta love that.
GREEN TIP: Use the water from boiling/steaming vegetables (after it cools to room temp) or from washing lettuce (washing it in a tub rather than just running water over it) to irrigate house plants.

We use our Klean Kanteen water bottles constantly, recycle, are going to use cloth diapers when our little one arrives in December and don’t use our dryer (we hang everything on drying racks).

Besides those tried but true techniques (cloth diapers, low flow shower heads, HE machine, wash in cold and line dry) I cook from SCRATCH! As a result, we have very little garbage. Just think of all the wasteful packaging from pre-made foods that won’t be finding it’s way to your house.

My latest green improvement was a big “duh” moment. I travel a lot for work and obviously can’t bring my water bottle through security. So I started packing an empty one to fill in a water fountain once I’m at the gate and can then use the rest of my trip. Not a big deal but everything helps!
