This week’s prize is doubly exciting for us: it’s 100% eco-friendly and comes from a local Virginia business (just up the road from Richmond in Culpeper, VA). Green Nest‘s got such a broad smorgasbord of kind-to-the-earth gifts that we’re psyched that this week’s winner will score such stylish loot. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get to it.
First off, the winner gets their choice of any 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 Fab Habitat recycled rug (woven from recycled polypropylene straws). Here’s a sampling of some of 50+ designs you get to pick from.
Then there’s a soy candle that comes in a decorative silk-screen glass. There are 19 designs to choose from and after the 90 hours of candle burning time you can reuse the glass (and even drink out of it).
But you won’t necessarily need that glass for drinking because the prize pack includes your choice of recycled soda/beer bottle tumbler set (you know I’m jealous of whoever wins this one since I failed miserably at my own DIY attempt). There are four in a set and 5 styles to choose from.
Last but not least, a green prize pack wouldn’t be complete without a little greenery. The winner can choose two of these Garden-in-a-Bag kits for growing some herbs without even having to get your hands dirty.
So that’s the prize. Stay tuned for a discount on Thursday, but for now let’s get to the entry details:
- PRIZE: A green prize pack as described above from Green Nest.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “GREEN ME” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: …let’s use this a chance to share some eco-friendly tips. Have you started taking any extra steps to be green lately? Or do you have an especially easy tip to share with everyone? Or, as we witnessed in Ithaca, have you seen any especially green locations recently?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, September 22nd at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The Lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck…
Note: We weren’t paid or perk’d for hosting this giveaway, we just take them on to reward our lovely readers! See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics from Green Nest.

I finally got some reusable produce bags for trips to the grocery store and love them. Perfect compliment to my reusable bags that I already used for many years.

GREEN ME! I work in a lab and started a polypropylene recycling program for our tip boxes. I’m so happy to see how useful and beautiful recycling can be!
Joelle says
GREEN ME! I’m from Durham, NC and we have a wonderful farmer’s market during the warmer months (which, luckily is much longer than just summer!).

Just the usual separating the recycling from the trash, reusable grocery bags etc…

GREEN ME! My husband and I just hit our one year anniversary and have decided to incorporate healthier living into our lifestyles. We make it a point to purchase one item from the organic aisle each time we go grocery shopping. We have torn up our nasty carpet and are going to lay hardwood down soon for a more breathable space. We are currently walking on the subflooring so a new rug would be fabulous! Love the website – thanks!

For laundry we use powdered detergent from “HopeSuds” that comes in a paper bag (no more plastic)! We recycle the paper bag and put the detergent in a glass container. AND BEST OF ALL, HopeSuds donates the proceeds received from the detergent to help families adopt children (something my husband and I are passionate about). Also — vinegar makes a great fabric softener!

Since moving in to my own apartment a few months ago, I’ve really stepped up my green (and $$ saving) efforts by recycling cans and newspapers, turning my lights out every time I leave a room, keeping appliances unplugged when not in use and I’m even planning to start a compost bin like the one you two have done!

I have started taking as many steps as I can to be green lately. I have started to recycle, wash clothes on cold setting, hang dry the majority of clothes, turning lights off…I could go on. These little tasks can make such a difference, and I am happy to say I’m getting on the right path.

I just left my last job, but while there I got everyone to recycle cans there. The company offered free soda’s for all but did not recycle. So I started with one trash can, and would take it home. Soon there were several trashcans full of cans, and I would still take home! From what I hear someone else, and the cleaning guy are now taking the cans home!

We’ve been working really hard at being greener over the past few years. We installed a reverse osmosis system on our kitchen sink to eliminate bottled water. We replaced all our plastic ware with glass. And nearly a year ago, we put 8,000 kws of solar panels on our house.

GREEN ME! My husband and I have transitioned to eco-friendly cleaning products over the last year. It’s great because not only are they better for the planet, but they’re better for us and our furbabies. We have also switched to organic milk, fruits and veg and free range eggs.

This is a silly (and very little) thing, but I’m amazed how frequently people use paper plates when they don’t need to. Yes, regular plates require water to clean, but think of how much modified waste you might be generating! My book group (20+ people) used to use paper plates every week for dinner/dessert, and we finally switched. Over the course of the year, that’s a lot of paper plates we’ll save!

GREEN ME! My husband and I love the green waste facility our city has. We get to drop off all our yard waste there instead of a landfill plus we can pick up bark and compost for a steal.

“GREEN ME!!!!” After having my first child 8 months ago, my perspective on “going green” has completely changed! Before, I didn’t think a lot about it, but now that I have a little crawler – I think A LOT about what I’m putting on the floors to clean them!! I have started switching out my cleaning supplies slowly and bringing in more green products!
Katherine says

I’m an editor, and my co-workers and I receive a TON of books every month. So when our pile gets too big, we cart ’em down to the company kitchen — the pile is always gone before the end of the day, and none of them go in the trash!

Among other things, we use eco-friendly cleaning products, unplug appliances not in use, turn off lights when we’re not in a room and recycle whatever we can. We hope to do much, much more when we own a home!

Our family has been moving like crazy for us (6x’s in 6 years) and so we are starting to get into the groove again. right now, the green things we’re doing is: not buying in excess, eating at home as much as possible (take-out/fast food includes a lot of wrappers), and incorporating green cleaning products to clean up our house as we run out of the not-so-green option (i can’t waste the green money we spent on the stuff we’ve already bought. sigh!)

*GREEN ME!*
I work at a newspaper and it is appalling how much paper gets thrown away every week. So I started recycling mine and even if I haven’t convinced my coworkers to do it (yet), that’s a lot of paper that gets recycled. At home, we recycle, use eco friendly cleaners, and I’ve even made my own cleaners. Also, a lot of our furniture is from used furniture stores.
Alyssa says
Our new city recycling bin has finally arrived, and it’s surprising how something as insignificant as a new blue bin can revive our recycling efforts!

Green Me! I try to diligently recycle and have been teaching my kiddies (ages 2 and 4) to do it as well.

I’ve been composting for a while now. I haven’t used it yet, but it makes me feel guilty to throw something so easily biodegradable into a trash bag where it will sit for got knows how long.

Green Me! I am in the process of switching our kitchen to a no paper towels/napkins kitchen. It may result in slightly more laundry, but our kids are old enough we do not have all the little spills anymore and it will be so much better for the environment and our pocket books with no more paper towels/napkins.
Denise Belkin says
GREEN ME! With three kids, I have to start thinking green in our house. It’s too expensive not to be green.

I work at a wine cellar and I find that we throw away a lot of bottles and corks. I’ve started doing all sorts of DIY projects with the corks especially (bath mats, trivets etc) and the bottles make great vases and candle sticks.

I have been trying to be a little more green around my house, one step at a time! We are planning to start a family soon so my focus was on creating a clean, green, baby friendly home! Every time a cleaning product in my home is empty and needs replaced I have been replacing it with a greener option. I also recently removed all air freshners from rooms and plug ins and added air quality friendly plants, like the rubber plant and peace lily! I also recently switched to organic milk, for my health, future babies health, and to support the organic farming methods used to produce it!
