Breaking Down The New Pad

It’s Friday! Let’s get mathy up in here. By now you know I’m a card carrying facts & figures nerd (here’s Exhibit A and Exhibit B) so when Sherry and I started to notice some unique stats about our new house my throat basically erupted with “LEMMEDOSOMEINFOGRAPHICSPLEEEEEASE.”

Whether she actually was keen on the idea or was just worried that disagreeing would turn me into some beastly werewolf-statistician, this post was born. We always end up loving random time capsule posts like this the most in hindsight (it’s fun to look back at things we probably would have forgotten otherwise, like this, this, this, this, and this). So in the name of some headed-into-the-weekend fun (because, you guessed it, we’re busy painting something) here are the infographicized facts about life in our new house:

NewHouseStats2

What fact struck you the most? Was it Sherry’s creepy birds-under-glass problem? How do they breathe!?

I have a very irrational fear of everything aviary. It doesn’t matter how small they are…birds scare the bahjeezus outta me. Your suffocating birds are right up my bird-fearing decor-loving alley!

I love how your brain works. In my previous life (before becoming a SAHM), I was a project manager. So as a SAHM, I have an extensive project plan for cleaning my house on a weekly/monthly basis. :) Ha! 5 inches of sink depth struck me – how awful! And 21 windows to be painted. I hate painting detailed stuff like that… glad it’s not me!

Also, I was so happy to see that you have those sea shell sinks. We have two at our beach house and I’m glad to see we’re in good company. Let’s embrace them together.

      http://aprrilsopinion.blogspot.com/2012/06/amazing-grout-cleaner.html

I used that recipe (that’s not my blog) and cleaned grout that had never been cleaned in 5+ years and it is AMAZING. I didn’t even know I HAD white grout in my kitchen until I used this- I bet most of what is required is already in your pantry. Not sure if it would be safe on slate though! You might want to check it out.

Definitely the amount of crown and chair molding! I’m sure you will appreciate those architectural details someday if your painting hands don’t completely fall off. But the number of frames struck a chord too – we are about 9 mo. Into our new home and have only hung five frames :(

I so feel your shallow-sink pain. Getting a high arched faucet is on my to-do list this weekend so I can actually fill my Britta for the first time since buying this house a month ago. (Shallow sink + low faucet = nothing fits). I’ll replace the sink when I re-do the kitchen next year.

Is swapping out a faucet a reasonable DIY thing? As a long time renter I’m a total novice at anything other than painting, frame-hanging and styling rooms. I’m nervous about trying it but after spending mucho bucks to have a plumber replace my toilets (4 of them – just to keep with the numbers theme!). I’d rather not write another check.

If it’s any consolation, I have a hot tub room in my 1989 Glen Allen, VA house (just a hot tub, some hooks on the wall, some mirrors on the ceiling (because yuck), ivory 80s track lighting, some wood paneling, navy and white floral wallpaper, and half blue tile / half tan berber carpet floors. We’ve lived in the house 6 years. It’s a storage room. We’ll get to it someday, in due time. Keep telling yourselves that.

This is amazing-collaged this way it looks like total insanity and complete nonsense! I saw the title and thought “numbers? Well, okay.” And then I scrolled down and was just like woah….I can see that: You have some work to do. You don’t take it too seriously or let it getcha (italics on the”too”); and yes, the numbers show us that you have a handle on the plan!

I just had to comment with a “nice job!” on this one!

Im digging the wallpapers! Our last house (1953 ranch) had been fully decorated on a large budget in, oh, 1973? A whole house palette of avocado, brown, harvest gold: Drapes, carpet, tile, funky wallpapers, wood-grain contact paper covered built-ins, orange stained glass chandelier in the kitchen, you-name-it; tons of hideousness! But, at one point, that was all the bomb-diggety and someone was really excited to put all that in. So with all these awesome stats (thanks John!) and seeing some of those coordinating wallpapers (and bluish slate and dusty blue trim), go retro and tell us how well decorated (for the era) your house is/was? :-)

Loved this post! It was reminding me of the 12 days of christmas too and the birds in a cloche was a hilarious ending! The 8 inch master bath mirror got me – I don’t think my entire head would fit in that mirror. I don’t know how you do your hair in the morning :) My favorite though that made me smile the most was Burger and Clara on the deck. SOOOoo sweet and happy! I’m going to have to check out the forum. You’ve mentioned it a few times and it takes that long for something to sink into my head that there are happenins going on that I should check out! Sharon

Funny, we just spent the last hour measuring a room and the furniture with all the dimension we could think possible. We are flipping living room with dining room (on separate floors) and I’m tired of remeasuring everything. I put all the information in Evernote so we can access it on the go.

The 5 inches of sink depth is definitely the most disturbing to me. My husband and I had a sink like that in our last apartment, and it was horrendous to deal with. I always had water splashing everywhere when I did dishes, and some things wouldn’t even fit! (i.e. tall pitchers). Maybe I’m just messy, but I feel your pain.

I had been looking closely at your bathroom pics previously, thinking I was seeing a seashell sink or two, but I couldn’t be sure. Why? We have four of them in our house.

I was a little sad to see so many negative comments about the sinks. While I would not have picked that style, they didn’t bother me. But now I guess I should re-think that as far as resale. (One is a very long double vanity top in the master that would cost a fortune to replace. Gulp!)

Honestly, I was so just so thrilled to go from one bath in our previous house to 2 1/2 baths here that those seashell sinks were fine by me.
