Things Are Looking Up
You all may remember how much we hate painting ceilings. So you can imagine my disappointment when “Repaint The Living Room Ceiling” recently popped up on our to-do list. Woe is me.
But, I can’t deny that a fresh coat of white paint does wonders for a ceiling, especially when it has issues like ours did. When we moved in there were some less-than-perfect ceiling problems. One of which occurred when we revealed a long unpainted stripe by removing a big ugly divider by the door. Back then, in our naiveté, we quickly slapped up some semi-gloss trim paint and called it a day.
Well… semi-gloss paint doesn’t exactly blend seamlessy with flat paint, because- duh- it’s glossy.
So after ignoring the shiny spots for two whole years, we finally worked up the energy to move all the furniture out of the room and fix the problem. This meant repainting the entire ceiling (with flat paint!) to avoid a patchy outcome (we’ve been advised by a painter friend that patching up a paint job doesn’t work well on ceilings, especially white ceilings, so painting the whole plane was the only way to ensure a smooth and even look). It wasn’t the quickest home improvement project in the world, but it ensured that “Repaint The Living Room Ceiling AGAIN” wouldn’t be on our to-do list any time soon.

It’s amazing how you don’t realize how dirty a ceiling can be until you paint it. Great job! The after looks much crisper.
Ah yes, I have this on my to-do as well. Our ceiling is painted in glossy paint where you can see every single imperfection since the light is drawn to those areas. I am not looking forward to it! Yours looks great!
Was your ceiling a mix of flat and semi-gloss while I was there?? If so, show’s you how observant I am, cause I didn’t even notice. We always use satin on our ceilings cause we like the extra sheen, but you have to be careful, because it also accents any imperfections in the ceilings. And yes, painting ceilings stinks, which is why I play the ‘too short’ card and Eric does them all! :)
Wow, it looks great! We just painted our bathroom ceiling and it was definitely tiring. Instead of white we did 50% lighter than the wall color (palladian blue). It looks so awesome that now I want to paint all of our ceilings a color. Since we have vaulted ceilings in 2 rooms, my sweet hubby is not so enthusiastic about the project. Thanks for the motivation!
My husband just finished painting our ceiling. He absolutely hated it!
Absolutely one of the worst household chores ever. We have to repaint our kitchen ceiling following some minor water damage, and even though it’s a small kitchen and we’d have to tarp cabinets and counters rather than move furniture, we are both absolutely dreading the chore. Yours looks fab, though!
We feel your pain. We are in the middle of painting the ceilings in our house. Seeing your after pictures makes this chore worth it.
Yuck! I have to do the same thing in a few rooms. But it does look so much better when done.
What is the size of your “P” in the middle of the wall? What is the size of the frame?

We blew up our “P” monogram to a 12 x 11″ size and the frame opening is 15 x 19″. Of course with the thick edges the frame itself is bigger but that’s the size of the opening. Hope it helps!
