Now that we’re wrapping things up at our current house and we’ve spilled the new house beans it’s like we’ve finally given ourselves permission to LOSE. OUR. MINDS. So yeah, this new house video tour is full of chirpy excitement that only a home in your dream neighborhood can produce. Forgive me. It’s not a good look. And watching it produces the same embarrassment that my way-too-enthusiastic mom elicited back in high school. Which confirms that I’m turning into her. Uh oh…
Woop, there it is. The first set of stairs we ever owned, and the house that’s attached to them.
A few notes:
- I’m not awkward at all in the beginning.
- We used John’s phone to “time stamp” this video thanks to Googling “today’s date” on Friday when we filmed it. We’re nothing if not high tech around here.
- Drinking game: count how many times I say love.
- Keep an eye out for John’s finger coming into frame to tell me which direction to walk (yes, he holds the camera and I walk next to him to chat since his description of the house would be three sentences mixed with long silences and if I held the camera you’d lose your lunch).
- Sorry about the audio getting odd in a few areas (empty rooms have weird echoes and it turns out the bathroom fan upstairs is crazy loud on film).
- I sing about stairs. My life is officially a musical.
- Ahhhhhhh! I can’t think of any more. Did I mention we’re crazy excited?!
Oh and please bear with us when it comes to questions about our plans and the ol’ to do list that we’re compiling. We promise we’ll whip up a floor plan post and share our new masterlist with all of our To-Dos on it as soon as we have those laid out (we’re still in that changing-our-minds-every-second phase). It might be a little while before we’ve fully segued into the full new house mindset since we still live in our current house and definitely have a lot of stuff on our plates with selling it, getting packed up, and moving.
And now, I’ll end this with a completely understated “AHHHHHHHHHHH!” and another big wet kiss for you guys. So excited to share this next chapter with you. Also if you’re my mom and you’re reading this, I’m not that scared of turning into you. Except that none of my shoes will fit anymore…
Carly Cleghorn says
YEEEEEE!! Cool, cool, cool! :D
Ronda says
Wow, I love the house and the yard! You both work really hard and totally deserve this dream house. I can’t wait to see what you do to it!
Amy says
I’m confused! Are there 2 unfinished spaces? Or are the unfinished room over the garage and the walk in attic the same spaces? Hoping it is 2 potential spaces for you to finish so we can see even more projects!
YoungHouseLove says
There’s an unfinished attic that you walk up stairs to access, and a room on the same level as the bedrooms (to the left of the stairs that lead to the attic) that’s completely unfinished just like the attic that’s also meant for storage space, but it could be finished down the line (to be another bedroom or movie room on the same level as the bedrooms).

Candy from Candied Fabrics says
OOh, I’m so excited for you guys!!!! Are you going to be able to get the hardwood sanded and re-finished before you move in??? It looks like it would be great, and think of all the work you won’t have to do later!!! (But I’ll bet there’s lots of projects that would be easier to do now…except for that whole needs money part, LOL) It’s a lovely home!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes, we’d love to get that cleaned and sealed (maybe even DIY it ourselves!) before we move in!

I am BEYOND excited for you!! I’m practically salivating while watching the video. I’m making lists for you! Love the french door idea- brilliant. And that sunroom with all those windows- insane- even if it is smelly!
So excited to begin this journey with you :)
Steph Nelson says
I don’t see one before that won’t be an after!!! What is under that stinky rug in the sunroom? If it’s concrete make sure to spray it down with an enzyme deodorant. Also, can’t get over how ALL your houses have sunrooms! So cool. Here in FL., they are called Florida rooms. Hope your showings have gone well and the current house is close to being sold! Can’t believe I just read that you aren’t bringing your long desk with you. I didn’t realize that they were REALLY built in.
And just wondering, but Sherry, do you drive? Or is John the only driver?
YoungHouseLove says
Isn’t that funny about sunrooms?! They’re so popular here! And thanks for the enzyme tip! As for driving, I can drive (I have a valid license, could do it in an emergency, etc) but I don’t prefer it (and John loves to) so it works for us since we only have one car anyway :)

You guys are inspiring to take on another big project after finally getting the other house the way you like it! Definitely a sign of being DIY junkies! Have you considered just ripping out the wallpaper and doing a massive “clean slate” paint job (rent a sprayer), since I’m guessing you’ll be painting the brick and paneling?
YoungHouseLove says
We have thought about that but we generally like to live with stuff for a while before doing anything drastic (a lot of times we realize that our third idea’s better than our first one, so we don’t like to be hasty). :)

OH MY GAWD!!!!
Seriously this is my fav house you’ve ever had. If you added a basement this would be my dream home :) I LOVE the windows that look over the backyard. And I think it’s cool that it’s all wallpapered, gives you a chance to start fresh. I also love that you guys are using the front room as an office. Some people do a “formal living room” which never gets used. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!
Becky says
Love the new house, very similar to the house I grew up in! I thought I should weigh in on the stair “to carpet or not to carpet” conversation and say that we had hardwood stairs in our house and it was great. The only time it was every super slippery was when my parents had the stairs refinished. We also had the slate tile in the front entry and I remember my mom cleaning and waxing the slate every few years. Love the slate!
Tahlia says
I love the news house! I always look at furnishings like blue trim and paneling (and faux brick lino!) and wonder how it was ever in fashion. Interesting how trends change over the decades!
Sorry if you’ve answered this before, but what was the original function of the ‘wet bar’ in the dining room? I haven’t lived in a house that has been more than 10 years old so the 60-70-80’s style is all new to me.
YoungHouseLove says
It’s actually in the family room, although I have no idea why it would be there. It’s only like 10 more steps to the sink! Haha! But I think it’s for entertaining (people could mix drinks there, etc).

Jessica says
Those wet bars are weird right? I have one like that too. Literally like here’s the wet bar and turn around and you are in the doorway to the kitchen.
We have one of those whole wall fireplaces too so I’m interested to see what you do. Interestingly that’s how I found your blog. Was googling for inspiration and a picture of your first house came up.
Allyson M says
Can I just say that I totally made myself “seasick” by watching your video because I was WAY too excited to see what the new house looked like??! I learned VERY early on that I can’t watch house tours because no matter how steady you are, I still get that hot flash feeling along with a little nausea! Whew! I made it! So excited to see the changes you make over time!
Congratulations, again!
YoungHouseLove says
Haha, so glad you made it!

Love the video! Can’t wait to see what you do with the place. And when you get time, let’s see the BACK YARD, too! Looks like there’s a fabulous deck out there – don’t keep us in suspense! ;)
YoungHouseLove says
We’ll definitely get back over there and make an outdoor tour as soon as we can!

I am so thrilled! The layout of this new one is almost identical to ours (in the Roxshire subdivision in Midlothian) so I am super-excited to see what you do with things! Looks like every room is a project! You will be very busy for awhile! Woot woot!
Kelly says
Wow. You guys get major props. I am still currently in the process of living in a house while re-doing it (going on two years). My current line is “just hang the freaking mantel already”. I started reading your blog at the first house re-do and now you are on to your third. What do you eat for breakfast? How do you have the mental/emotional stamina to do this all over again? Seriously I’m impressed. Can’t wait to see what you guys do with the new place!
YoungHouseLove says
I think we’re a special breed of crazy! Haha. But seriously, the only way I can describe it is that some people love to go sailing or fishing and some people love to play on a kickball league or study foreign languages – we just love DIY. We did it just for fun as a hobby, and we’re so grateful that it grew into a job for us! But we’d never keep doing it if it wasn’t what we loved, so that love definitely is what drives us. I know it sounds crazy, but even stripping all that wallpaper sounds like a fun challenge to us. Although those might be famous last words… haha!

First, if you’re trying to respond to all comments you must be killing yourself. Don’t! Anywho…..probably been said but Jon is one lucky guy that he isn’t the trim painting expert (if I recall correctly.)

Haha, it’s true! I’m the trim wench in our house!

I can’t believe you guys are planning on getting rid of the wet bar! I’m planning to put one in! I think it could be modified into something awesome. Imagine a mirrored back, glass shelves filled with bottles and glasses, a small granite top and an updated sink/faucet. Argh. I want a wet bar so bad!
Terri says
It was so nice for the previous owners to leave you those rockin’ swag curtains downstairs. I can’t wait to see what you do to transform all of these spaces. You’ve already begun with the fun rug inside the front door!
Jenn says
I’m so excited to see what you guys do with this house. I’ve followed since the first house and this is the first time I can honestly say “holy crap- they got some work to do”. I think you guys are going to blow our minds and because this reminds me of a house we looked at but tuned down because of the “work” I am so excited/curious/envious to see what you do.
jbhat says
It’s going to be so much fun to watch this place as it evolves under your expert and stylish care , particularly the funky master sink and wet bar situations.
The desk and outside space look super inviting.

Charles says
Our house has a similar intercom system. It works, but there’s a nasty hum, so i disconnected it. We found it to be very useful before the hum became the frequency on which our headaches resonated!
I’ve priced replacement units, but they’re pretty expensive…particularly when so many other things need attention first!
If you find someone who can repair your intercom, please share their contact info!!!
Anxious to see what ideas you come up with on this house!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Thanks Charles! We’ll share whatever we end up doing with them!

Seriously, this is so adorable! I’m incredibly jealous because I LOVE moving. How awesome that you have this semi-blank slate to put your mark on! Excited to watch the transformation!
Monica says
I freaking love it! There is so much potential! Blue paneling, anyone? Looks like you have lots of exciting work ahead. I’m biased to the red unpainted brick so I’m kinda hoping you guys leave it bare this time, but I’m sure it will look fab whatever you decide to do! Congrats again!
Jacqueline says
Oh I’m so jealous! The potential is amazing! (My husband who is a builder just groaned, I’m the dreamer-upper then he has to do the work lol!). I can’t wait to see what you do with it!
rae parkin says
I hope you don’t wreck this house with a lot of cheap stuff.

I’m an avid follower, but have never commented (can you say creepy??) but THIS POST made me comment! I am so thrilled for you guys! I love what you did with the house you’re currently in, and can’t wait to see the updates on this one! You guys rock!

I don’t know if I have said this yet, but I appreciate you guys SOOO much!! One of my favorite things about ya’ll is that you pour your heart and personality into each house you live in regardless of its longevity as your abode. I like to think this is a small example of a bigger idea you guys live by. Everything in this life is temporary, but if you live for the short term you miss out on such amazing adventures, relationships, and investments (time/money/emotional). I have lived in four houses over the last eight years (three different towns)…not because I would have picked that for myself or my family, but because that is where life has taken us. We just bought another house in another town for the next (very exciting) stage in our lives. I did not decorate our first couple of houses because I just didn’t see the point in investing that much of myself into something so temporary…until I found YOUR blog. You guys inspired me to seize the décor, and I am so thankful for your influence. It may be cheesy, but loving those houses (even knowing they may be temporary) has opened my heart up to love so much more. Letting go of the fear of emotional investment regardless of the longevity has helped me to develop more meaningful friendships, be a less worried/obsessed mother, and develop a sense of self that I never would have developed otherwise. It’s not just a house (houses), it’s not just a blog, and you’re not just two people who are happy to over share. Ya’ll have been a blessing in my life. I cannot WAIT to see what ya’ll do with this new dream-neighborhood-home! ..and I don’t know who said it originally but “the only thing in life that never changes is that life changes.”
ps. I canNOT wait to pergola-ize our new house’s garage door!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Oh my gosh, you’re so sweet Laci! I seriously want a bumper sticker that says “Seize the décor!” – haha! Your comment made my day. All the best with your new house! And I’m so glad that you’re having fun making your house feel like home :)

Holy 80’s, Batman! All I could think while watching that video is how 80’s that house is! It reminded me of the house I grew up in (coincidentally built in the late 70’s/early 80’s!), especially that fireplace, with that dark brick across the whole wall! And the little desk nook! I can’t wait to see what you guys have up your sleeves for this house! :-)
Tarnya Cook says
It seems like the perfect family home, especially for a couple who work from home. Looking forward to seeing you guys work your charm and the transformation that will take place. I love american style homes, wish I could pick one up and bring here plus your real estate is crazy cheap compared to ours not counting places like NYC of course!
katie says
wow, that looks perfect! as in, a great place to live, and full of fun projects. =) the sunroom-deck layout reminds me SO MUCH of my great aunt & uncle’s house when i was growing up, it’s exactly the same down to the boxed-in bench around the tree? but i imagine you won’t be hanging a mounted walleye fishing trophy over the windows. =)
youandmeandwalliemakethree.com says
Aggh! Your kitchen is the EXACT layout (and probably finish too!) of my mom’s kitchen in Cleveland. She constantly says its not big enough, but I think its plenty big and just needs a makeover. Can’t wait to see what you do with yours!

What a great house! Good bones and blue trim! I see lots of painting in your future! :) Any ideas for color schemes in this house? So anxious to see what you do!
YoungHouseLove says
I think we’re just going to wait to get in there and see where we end up! We like pretty much every color these days, so it’ll be fun to see where this house takes us :)

Ok, did I miss something???? Did you say in the video you have owned this house for the last 6 months and we are just hearing about it now??? My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read you signed the papers the other day. I’m confused. Can you please clarify and retell the timeline of when all of this wonderful news went down. BTW, so excited for you.

In case you guys haven’t already thought of this, it might be interesting to see your To-Do list you guys put together for house #2 to see what ideas you stayed with and completed, what items you totally changed your mind on or evolved into something totally different and what items you would like to see the new owners tackle.
So excited for you guys!
