Dog Adjusting To A New House

Some of you have asked how Burger’s getting along in the new house. Short answer: great. Short answer with a fancy Mary-Poppins-ish twist: just splendidly.

It only took him a day or two to figure out where his food bowl now lives and which door to wait at when he needs to go out. Other than that, he seems to be having fun discovering (and re-discovering) his favorite spots to hang. Here are some shots from the last two months to document his love for the new casa.

This one was taken pretty much right after we moved in. He quickly identified this sun-warmed corner of the rug in the living room and loved to park his keister there every morning.

Burger Sun Spot Far

It was part of his very own GTL routine – growl, tan, lick myself. Yes, we watch Jersey Shore since it’s my wife’s home state.

Burger Sun Spot Close

Though that routine has been interrupted by the introduction of Karl the sectional (since he blocks the sunspot), Burger has discovered a few new sun-drenched locations lately- including the windowsill itself. He’s such a cat sometimes. Here he is snuggled up in Clara’s hospital blanket (we brought it home for him to get used to her scent and now it’s his official “blankie”).

Burger Window Sill

Sometimes he’ll move his relaxing into one of our laps, which really is a win-win for everyone on a cold morning.

Burger Johns Lap

And occasionally he even helps supervise Clara during playtime. Although he tends to sleep on the job. Unless of course a noise is heard outside. Then all howl breaks loose. See what I did there? I replaced h-e-double-hockey-sticks with the word howl. Booyah.

Burger Clara On Couch

But when he’s not campaigning for the laziest chihuahua in the world title, he does his fair share of “quality control” – which basically means he helps us test out new purchases. Like our duvet:

Pillows With Burger

And our new sectional pillows (even before the sectional was here, we tossed them on the sleeper sofa in the office and Burger took them for a test ride):

Target Pillows Burger Testi

He also manages to squeeze in some playtime too, usually with his favorite toy: Divalectible. It was a gift (for Clara, actually) that Burger took an enthusiastic liking to. Don’t judge us for the name of this tiny stuffed chihuahua with a pink feather boa on it (Divalectible is actually its given “Beanie Baby name” and somehow it stuck). But feel free to judge Sherry for the weird noise that she makes during this video. I call it her “excited dolphin call.” She does it to get the dog to come a runnin’. Just not usually in public. Or on youtube.

Of course, it should come as no surprise that Burger continues to spend most of his days under the covers. So even though there’s a whole new house for him to explore, we’ve definitely got the same ol’ Burger on our hands.

Burger Under Covers

So that’s what our oldest kiddo has been up to when he’s not “supervising” as we paint or demo something around the house. Life’s good when you’re an eight pound chihuahua.

Psst- If all goes well we might just have another post today or tomorrow for ya. Let’s just say that we’ve finally started gaining guest bedroom momentum (with just 6 days until the inlaws arrive – yikes) so we’re most likely working away as you read this. And Burger’s probably supervising.

I usually don’t comment, but I HAD to say that Burger and Clara together are just too cute!! I’m 20wks pregnant and have a little yorkie named Dash (he’s about Burger’s size) so watching this, I get a glimpse of what our lives will be like soon! I love how Burger took the toy and shook it like a mad-man – Dash does that too. Haha!

Aw, I love Burger! He’s seems to get along so well with Clara!

This is an unrelated question and probably one you’ve gotten already but have you guys checked in with the new tenants that moved into your previous house? Will you be doing a post about how they’re liking your old casa? They probably might not be comfortable enough to let you go in and take photos of their place now but I’m just curious to see how they’re settling in and if they’re enjoying all your old appliances, paint, window draperies and general overall loveliness of your old place. :)

Love this post! Sherry – don’t feel bad. There are moments when I realize the noises and baby-talk voices I use with my 5-year-old Yorkie Maddie, and I think – WHOA. So glad no one is around.

We have a den/spare room that has french doors….I’m wondering do you have any suggestion for a non-permanent cover for the glass? Since we’ll only use the den as a guest room a few weeks out of the year I’m looking for something that we can take down once company is gone.
    Thanks!!!!

Why not mount some curtains with some rods (wide mounted so the curtains don’t block any light, they just fall in front of the wall on either side of the french doors). That way you can pull them closed every once in a while, but otherwise they stay open and add softness and height. Pottery Barn has some lovely images of curtains around french doors. Hope it helps!

So you know what’s really funny? I’m watching your video, and at the end when Sherry makes her crazed-dolphin-slash-turkey-sounding call, one of my pups (Ruby) JUMPS up from her bed (which is at my feet), and RUNS to the living room to see what that was! Then she just sat there, looking from side to side… I’m sure, trying to figure out what the heck that was.

And the other pup? Yeah, she didn’t move a muscle. She didn’t even perk her ears or lift her head! She’s still fast asleep next to me! LOL.

Mmhmm… and Ruby is STILL in the living room… just waiting for that crazed-dolphin-slash-turkey-calling-woman to give her some lovin, I’m sure. LOL.

    Thanks for the laugh. :-)

(p.s. painted FOUR paint swatches on our future baby’s room wall today! And two more inside the closet. Fun, fun! :-D Thank you guys so much for always inspiring.)

Howdy P’s! I read your blog all the time and we’ve just recently been bitten by the DIY bug and currently have 3 running projects. I have this dilemma I’m wondering if you’ve answered it or come across it before. Out house is relatively old (90’s) and the baseboards are an older style white (or they’ve collected years of dust and have yellowed….let’s just be honest right!?) :0) Our current project is the laundry room and the baseboards are particularly horrible in that room. So much so that I cannot stomach not painting them a crisp shiny white now that the room is this lovely gray. But it’s a domino effect you know? If you paint this baseboard then when you get to the door jam…you must paint….. but then the other side of the door jam….then the hallway side trim…then the hallway baseboards…..then the…..ahhhhh! You know what I’m saying? What to do????
