Duvet In The House

Remember the West Elm duvet cover that we ordered on sale last week? It’s here!

West Elm Bedding1

Oh, I guess it would make more sense to show it in our space now:

Duvet On Bed

Of course we’ll be adding in some bolder accent pillows down the road, but we love it. It’s a smidge greener than we expected, but it actually reminds us of the bold blue-green color that we used to paint the back of our built-ins. We filled it with an über-cushy king sized Ikea comforter (we think it’s this one, but we’re not 100% sure since there are so many). And can I just say that we’re so glad we didn’t try to make do with a skimpy full/queen duvet cover for our queen sized bed anymore. The extra fabric means no one has an arm or a leg hanging out in the cold anymore.

And we’re not the only ones who love the new bedding:

Duvet Burger Clara On Bed

Don’t mind the chihuahua foot nibbling that’s going on. It happens a lot. The guy grooms himself like a cat. Here he is looking a bit more presentable:

Duvet Burger On Top

Alhough most of the time you’ll find Burger looking more like this: buried beneath the covers.

Duvet Burger Under Covers

And with the new duvet in place, we’re now itching to paint the walls. We realize that the color of the duvet is reading a bunch of different ways in these pics, but this one’s probably the closest to being accurate. It’s definitely a sort of bold teal color.

Duvet Color Swatches On Bed

We’re currently favoring these swatches (since we don’t want the walls to be the same bold hue as the duvet since that could be a bit much). But we definitely want something darker and smokier than we’re used to. You know, so Ed the bed really pops (along with the sweet crown molding we inherited in this room).

Duvet Paint Swatches

We don’t have a clear winner yet but we’re getting there (we used to have about 15 swatches taped up there, but we’re slowly narrowing them down). Oh and we also considered picking up the goldy-yellow tones in the duvet cover on the walls instead, but decided that we both prefer a cool-ish gray-blue-green shade for our sleeping space over a warm yellowy-gold one. Here’s hoping we get around to making a final decision and painting that huge room sometime soon. Yes, that’s me trying to rally my own troops and get up the energy to tackle the biggest bedroom that we’ve ever painted (14 x 14′ is straight up palatial by our standards).

Did anyone else get their West Elm after-sale order yet? We were surprised at how fast it arrived.

I was just at Ikea in South Florida during the holidays and I saw your bed–I said to my husband, “Hey! There’s Ed the bed!”

    …he didn’t really understand.

But, the comforter looks great. I love the bold color. Can’t wait to see how the paint color ties everything together!

I really like the darkest of the green swatches you taped on the wall… I think green is a lovely and relaxing color for the bedroom. I also really loved the light and glossy green that used to be in your little girl’s room. :)
It was such a vibrant and “happy” color.
Anyway, I think you’ll end up making the best choice for you and, as always, the result should be amazing. :)

I’m catching up on your last few posts and have to tell you that I am loving the Blue in the bookshelves. It’s very fun and I think I’ll definitely need to find a place for that color in our next house. It really makes me motivated to keep saving for our next house and get our current one ready for renters! I’m enjoying see everything you’re up to! Happy New Year!!

Love the duvet… it’s going to look great on Ed when you get some more pillows to bulk up the headboard area some more.

Y’all are a lot more visionary than I am, I guess. Those wall paint colors don’t seem to match the duvet at all, in my opinion… but what do I know? LOL

Can’t wait to see how it all comes together. I’m sure the two of you can pull it off and make it look great.

What about pulling the mustard-y color of the leaves from the duvet for the walls? I think of it would make the teal on the duvet really pop.

      Hey Em,

We touched on that in the last paragraph of the post. Basically we thought it would be a bit warm for our tastes so we decided we like the cooler blue-green-gray route when it comes to the bedroom.

The new duvet looks great and I can’t wait to see what paint color you choose! We are currently in the process of choosing a silvery sage/gray-green for our open floor plan living room/dining room and I’m also agonizing over the decision…not least because the two rooms together are huge- 15×35 (that’s a lot of painting!).

So, here’s my question- since the duvet cover and duvet are king size, what do you do with all the material at the top of the bed, since the duvet can’t hang over the end of the bed because of the posts? I really like the look of Ed, but I’m not sure I could get behind a bed that wouldn’t allow me to drape the covers over the end…I need that extra foot warming space ;)

      Hey Sara,

A king sized bed is actually the same length as a queen, so the extra fabric is just on the sides and not on the bottom (which means it can hang about a foot over each side, which looks great, but it doesn’t get bunched up on the bottom due to those end posts). Hope it helps!

That is really great! Have you thought about doing two-tone paint? Either paint one wall darker (like behind the bed) and then the others a paler shade? I have never done it but it looks really cool when done right. I’m sure you guys will come up with something awesome!

We chatted about that possibility but since we have that little nook to the left of the bed (the wall dips in) and we have that alcove on the other side of the room with the sink, we’re hoping all one shade of paint will unify the funny footprint.

I’m going for a smokey-greyish-green in my guest bedroom too and found that Behr’s Valley Mist and Smokey Slate were the winners. I’m *almost* settled between the two, and if you haven’t checked’em out already, why not throw a few more paint chips up there?

I keep Home Depot’s paint department in business with the amount of paint samples I purchase. Paint chips don’t work 100% of the time for me, so I figure it’s better to buy a couple samples than a galloon of paint I end up not liking! Now to just come up with art projects to make use of all the sample jars I have….

Yup, I wouldn’t trust how they read on your screen since it has to do with your monitor and stuff. On our screen they look pretty blue except for the darkest swatch on that card with three tones.

I love it! I have been eyeing the West Elm duvets for awhile now. Our local WE closed last year so I can’t ogle them in person. We ordered the overlapping squares headboard on clearance from WE and it will be delivered next week. Can’t wait! I’m eyeing some nightstands at Target that will hopefully coordinate. Once all that is in place maybe I’ll pick up some new bedding, there are just too many great choices.

I noticed that the dimensions of the Ikea comforter are 86*102 and the comforter cover are 92*108. I recently got a new comforter and duvet cover, and I obsessed about finding the right sizes to match. Do you notice any extra space in the ends of the duvet cover or think it lays funny at all? I used to have a smaller comforter inside a larger cover and thought it fit weird.

      Hey Wendy,

It seems to fit perfectly! Since our duvet has ties in the inside corners we just tied the comforter in place and it seems to line up perfectly so there’s not anything unfilled or odd about it! So funny that the sizes are listed differently! Maybe the comforter is always a bit smaller to account for the fabric wrapping around the sides of it since it’s fluffy?

Have you considered a dark chocolate brown? It could make your floors and colors pop, and it would look great with a lot of white furnishings (like Ed the Bed :), and it would really make that duvet a star.

We used a color called Winter Sea by Porter Paint. The best way I can describe it is a green/blue/grey color. It looks much better on the walls than on the computer screen. Here is a picture of it in our house. http://www.roomzaar.com/rate-my-space/Living-Rooms/Work-in-Progress–need-help/detail.esi?oid=21183844

I love the bottom swatches. I gather it’s a bit of lost-in-computer-monitor-translation, but the upper set of colors look a little less blue. My favourite has to be the bottom left swatch. It looks like in your new house, you’re going for something a little more dramatic and I think that really fits! It’s still a soft bedroom color but has a little spunk to it! ;)

I don’t know what it is about pinstripes lately, but I’ve been SO tempted to throw some in to my decorating plan. If I was in your shoes, I’d probably tape off a section of wall somewhere (behind the bed? on a side wall? in a lonely corner?) and put in a few stripes of varying thickness, using that blue from your built-ins. Not a whole wall, not a whole lot, but just one crazy punch of darker-stripes-on-lighter-walls. And whatever you two decide to do, I’m sure I’ll love it.
