Buying Rugs For Our House

It feels like the last few months have been The Age Of Rugs. We got this one from a local outlet for our bedroom…

Cuttinglegs14

… this one from Urban Outfitters for our kitchen…

UrbanRug Toy Detail

… and just got this one from Joss & Main for our office…

Rug Screenshot

It was actually kind of hard to find an 100% jute rug that was 6 x 6, so when this guy came up for $89 (down from $150) we finally pulled the trigger.  Especially since Pottery Barn sells a nearly identical one for $129 down from $149 and Overstock has something similar for $115.

We had always wanted something round to soften all the angles in the room (the built in desk, the chair rail, the criss-cross chairs) and tie into the big round chandelier that we tweaked by spraying it indigo and adding a giant shade…

Shade After Vert Side

So we just measured things out on the floor to see what would work (an 8 x 8 was way too big, and a 5 x 5 was too small). Thankfully we were able to determine that a 6 x 6 would be the right size to make the room feel nice and balanced without getting in the way of our chairs (since we have to push them out to get in and out, and any large rectangular rug was always getting caught on the legs and annoying the heck out of us).

In the in interest of keeping it real, here’s what the office looked like before we cleaned Clara’s toys off the floor and organized the piles of random stuff on top of our desk:

Office1

And here’s how it all looked once we did a wee bit of cleaning before snapping a proper rug photo:

Office2

We love that it’s “braided woven” since in our experience of owning a few natural fiber rugs, the braided ones tend to be the softest, so they’re less bushy and wire-y. Sure enough, when our new rug arrived, it was nice and soft, and thankfully it fit perfectly in the office. See, no issue with the chairs being pulled out and our new rug. Wahoo.

Office With Us In It3

So that’s the latest rug update that has gone on around here.

Office Rug5

Oh, and Burger approves:

Office Rug4

Oh, and new rug = a good excuse for a plastic animal parade.

Office Rug7

I think that shot captures how it’s nice and soft. Always a plus when it comes to jute (anyone remember that Friends episode where Joey learns French from Phoebe and says “Tout De La Fruit”? – I always want to say “Jute De La Fruit”).

Are there any other jute lovers out there? Or round-rug owners? This is our first round rug, and I have to admit, we love it. In a house full of right angles, it definitely feels kind of novel. Haha. So that’s my live-on-the-edge-tip. Be a rebel and try a round rug once in a while.

I like it! I’d love a round rug for our future TV area in our upstairs master suite. They do break up the right angles in a room nicely. That’s why I keep telling my husband that I want a round coffee table for our front room and why I bought a round fire pit for our back patio. They’re just nice to add!

I love any Friends reference!!! Ahh, Joey. Gotta love him!!

Loving that round jute rug! The knotty texture is somehow soothing underfoot right? ;) Speaking of round rugs though, I recently finished crocheting a round rug out of old soft sheets (upcycling!) – the texture feels somewhat similar to jute and the pattern plays out interestingly depending upon the sheet colors/shades.

Our home goods has a load of rugs like this in all different sizes. I bought a few, they were so inexpensive!!! 4×6 was 29.00!!! The small ones were 19.00! I have had them about four weeks and they are holding up great with three kids and two dogs.

Fun! I always wondered about jute rugs and their softness. Good to know about the braided ones.

And that’s such a great Friends episode.

Yesterday I told you about that Joss & Main rug, and last night I looked again and it was sold out, So as I started reading this post, I was holding my breath a little to see if you really had bought it! Haha.

Do you, guys, ever shop on ideeli.com or onekingslane.com? Rug sales come up on both of these sites quite frequently (as well as furniture and a ton of other home stuff). And in general, do you, guys, prefer to shop in stores or online?

As for jute rugs, I’ve wanted one for a while, but my husband has a dust mite allergy, so it’s best not to have rugs at all (especially in the bedroom). So I’m wondering if jute, being a natural bare-bone kind of material, is mite-resistant or not. Have you ever looked into different limitations to decorating (such as allergies) to give advice to folks like us on how to work around some no-nos and still have a beautiful home?

As a side note, I’ve also been drawn to bamboo rugs since I found out about them (not the type woven with bamboo fibers, but the type made with tied bamboo slats). Pier1 Imports sells them and they are gorgeous. Here’s one with an Asian flare:

Jossandmain.com is a sale site like ideeli.com or onekindslane.com – so we definitely shop online for rugs since that’s where we got this one (we also got our Urban Outfitters rug in the kitchen online). We also love to get things locally and see them beforehand if we can, so that’s why we visit local outlets and clearance centers (which is where we got our bedroom rug). As for jute and mites, I don’t have info on that – but maybe try google? And thanks for the bamboo rug link- so charming!

Always love your decorating choices and think the jute rug looks awesome! Great tip on getting it braided – I always wondered how comfortable those natural rugs were!

I love how your “before” picture of cleaning up all the toys and paperwork really does not look much different than your after! I think on a good day, my house looks like your before picture. :)

Sorry about that – we don’t authorize those sorts of ads, but sometimes they’re sneaky and make their way through without our permission. We just as annoyed by those as you are! If you could give us specific names of ads we can help get them blocked in the future.

The rug looks great! Any tips on owning jute/natural fiber rugs? I am seriously considering one for our living room but I’ve heard they’re easily stained, hard to clean, and fall apart or create a “dust”, so you think braided jute is the way to go?

To us they have generally been easy thanks to being sort of the same material as straw brooms (you can sweep up a stain but it doesn’t penetrate the straw). We just vacuum them, spot clean spills with mild soap and water, and shake them out occasionally, just to knock out crumbs the vacuum might not reach. Hope it helps!

Since your on a rug kick…..

I have a rug question if you guys have time to answer it…I recently bought a rug I saw on one of your mood boards. It is a wool rug with lots of my colors in it, blues, greens, creams, and browns. It also has a lot of red and peach. My question is this…my style would probably be labeled “nantucket/beachy/earthy” can you make a reddish persian rug with the right accent colors work with a nantucket style?

    Thanks!

I think you could since it’s sort of nautical to mix red in, and every accent doesn’t have to be beachy – only a few. Hope it helps!

Gah! That master bedroom rearrange is rad! I. Can’t. Get. Over. It. I think it is my favorite thing all have done! Yes, the kitchen is a close 2nd, but COME ON! What a difference moving that furniture around made. I wasn’t a fan of the before, but you listed your reasons and sometimes the room really does dictate an arrangement. Way to take the reigns! That is a magazine room now!

And, I like your round rug too! :)

Sooooo… I wanted to ask about something you have on your desk in the first office photo. It looks like it has two drawers that pull out. I have a couple things that are similar that I got from IKEA ages ago that hold all of our DVD’s (we put them in white CD slips and label them to save a TON of space!) But they stopped carrying them and I need another option. Do you remember where you got that?
Also, while scrolling down I saw someone’s comment about the light fixture and the mirrror in your room competing. I just wanted to say that I LOVE THE WAY YOUR ROOM LOOKS!!! To me since the fixture is white it just sort of floats until you look at it and realize what a fun piece it is. I really love the striking mirror above your bed… in fact I’m coveting it LOL N-E-WAYZ I look at the photo and am wowed not confused about what to focus on :) Looks amazing!

I think your office is probably my favorite room in your house. I don’t know what it is, exactly, that I love about it more than the other rooms, but I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the prints that flank the window above the desk. Something about the symmetry of the desk and window with the asymmetrical yet balanced prints hanging above just speaks to me.

I love the round jute rug! I bought the Potterybarn one from the PBOutlet for $99 back in March 2011. It started in my bedroom, and has now taken up residency in my office for the past two months. It’s held up very well with a dog who sometimes likes to scratch my PB rug before laying down. I just do a quick snip with some scissors to any stray jute strands that show up every 3 months or so.
