Target Pillows: Purloined

You heard it here first. “Purloined” is the new “snagged.” Just kidding. I’m just being weird. John didn’t even know what it meant when he walked by and saw the title. “What the.. purloined?… are you sure that’s a word?” was his exact response. Which is exactly what I’m going for. Not. Yes, I’m bringing back “not” too. I’m in a strange mood. Anyway, we’re still working on a few different projects today (details soon!), but we figured we’d pop in and share what we recently snagged purloined at Tar-hay (btw, Tar-hay is the new Tar-jay):

Target Pillows Full

Ok, so purloined might mean “get by any means necessary” or “steal” – but we paid for them like good law abiding citizens. I couldn’t pass up these patterned gray velvet pillows for Karl. At $24 a pop (well, plus 5% off that since I used my trusty Tar-hay card) they’re not insanely cheap (like my $2.50 pillow from Bed Bath & Beyond) but they’re nice and big (around 18″). And the velvety texture and pattern feel a lot more high end than the usual big-box store purchase (nothing piddly and cheap looking will do for our new family member sectional). So I choose to think of them as around $75 cheaper than the big textured ones I drool over at places like Restoration Hardware or Williams Sonoma Home. Glass half full, style.

Target Pillows Close Up

Of course we’ll add in some serious color too with some other pillows, art, curtains- etc. Don’t want a big gray room with nothing but a gray sectional and gray pillows. The reason I liked the textured gray tone on tone look was because I thought they would layer in with other pops of colors and even other more obvious high-contrast prints for something that’s not too crazy but just interesting enough. Can’t wait to see them sitting on The American Dream when it arrives (yes that’s Karl’s other nickname). If not we’ll just return them. No harm, no fowl.

Psst:  “No harm, no fowl” is the new “no harm, no foul.” Spread the word.

Psssst: Did I mention I’m in a weird mood?

#1: I love those pillows! I’m always on the lookout for more pillows/ideas for pillow shams. And I like the way you think about them being cheaper than the Restoration Hardware ones!!

#2: It was just announced in Boston today that NKOTB and BSB are playing a concert at Fenway Park. I might have to purloin some tickets.

    …just sayin’….

I quickly scanned the title of this post and the photos at work today…it wasn’t until I just got home and had a chance to read it that I discovered that “purloined” wasn’t some fancy smancy type of velvet pillow decoration technique. Funniest post to date by far, I loled the entire time, especially at the part about bringing “not” back.

I like people who can justify any purchase! :)

My husband and I signed up for the Target card in October. We figure we’ll save at least $160/year just by using our card. We save money when buying stuff we are going to buy anyways….which equals more money for decorating. :P

Love the cushions, may have to pop over to Target this weekend I think. We are planning on getting dark brown couches and I think these cushions will work well with the color. Can’t wait for the couch to arrive.

Totally unrelated, but have you SEEN this? It just reminded me of you – creepy, I know, since I’ve never met you. Anyway. Maybe for guest bedding? Or a switcheroo for your bedroom? (I have two sets of bedding for when I need a change but Dave won’t let me spend money doing it).

Besides, I snagged, er, purloined this “Green is the new black” Sigg bottle as soon as I saw it and it often reminds me of your “YHL is the new black/blog” post: http://s3.thisnext.com/media/230×230/SIGG-Green-Is-The-New-Black-1_B1B5C1C8.jpg

Can I just say I love you guys and your blog?!! Thanks for making the work week so much more fun; I look forward to taking my break and reading your posts each day. : ) LOVE your new house and all that you’re doing!! I had some questions about pillows on couches… Is there a general “rule of thumb” for how many to put on a sofa and how many to put on a sectional? (we have a sofa and sectional) I am always second-guesssing myself and can never tell if I use too many or too little. : ) Also, is there a good ratio for mixing different sizes and colors and patterns? If it’s a light couch do you go dark with the pillows, and vice versa? If there isn’t a “rule of thumb”, what do you guys like more/gravitate towards and would recommend as being more pleasing to the eye? THANKS!!!! : )

      Hey Diana,

It’s totally a personal preference thing! Katie Bower and I were just talking the other day and I said “I think my magic number for a sofa is 3” and she said “we have like 8 on ours” and I love how her sofa looks so it’s proof that there’s no right answer! As for the sectional, we’re not sure at all what we’ll like, but we plan to just eye it and play around to see whatever works. That’s generally how we approach the whole home improvement thing anyway, just learn as we go and eye it until we end up with something we love. Hope it helps!

Hi- I love your blog! Those pillows are lovely- you can upgrade them easily by snipping the stitching at the lower edge and removing the poly-fil form. Places like JoAnn’s & Hancocks usually have down filled pillow forms on sale (or a coupon for discountss). Slide that in the cover and hand or machine sew the lower edge closed. It makes a huge difference in the comfort and appearance. I used to sew for some decorators and this was a trick they used often.

      Hey Pam,

These pillows are actually zipper-closed covers with a pillow inside, so we can slip better ones in if we ever want to upgrade!

      Hey Julia,

So sorry for the trouble. Unfortunately that button has been crashing our site lately (when so many comments load at once it slows down the server and if too many people push it at once the site crashes). We’re working on trying to get the button back up, but we definitely have to keep the blog’s “health” as a priority! Here’s hoping we can figure it out though!

I bought those pillows for my gray couch, too, but sadly had to return them because they didn’t stand out as much as I thought they would against my gray ikea couch – I have the Ektorp in Svanby gray. The color of my couch looks to be lighter than what you guys are getting, so they may work better for you. I’m excited to see!

Your blog has inspired me to redecorate my house! I love the idea of the gray paint with pops of yellow to decorate. I have a quick question regarding color schemes though. We have dark brown carpet in our house and everything is very earth tone-y. Will gray paint look ok in with all of the browns and greens?

    Thanks!

We think they’re both neutrals so they should work well together. Just try to bring in a few other cool tones (like blue-gray pillows and art) to tie things together.
