And now for a behind the scenes ceramic animal related story. While we were working on this…
… this happened:
Since I’m still not ready to talk (or write) about it in depth, here’s John’s depiction of how the tragedy occurred:
Alas, my favorite giant ceramic dog (snagged from HomeGoods three years ago for just 29 bucks) sadly lost his face. In the words of the world’s most famous blogger, it sucked and then I cried.
Yes, there’s a candle lit vigil in progress. Goodbye Mr. Ceramic Dog. You were a wonderful pet. Never had to clean up after you once. Until this happened.
I might try to glue him back together (although some of the pieces are pretty tiny). Until then I’ll be found shaking, crying, and whispering “why?”
Just kidding, I’ll live.
Psst- To anyone having Feedburner/Google Reader issues with our posts coming through, we think we’ve fixed the issue. But just in case it’s safest to unsibscribe and resubscribe, just to be sure you get pinged whenever we post something new.
Oh no! I bet someone out there can find you a replacement, no? (It’s ok to offer to replace a fake pet, right?)
omg. I don’t even know what to say. :-(
Oh no, that’s so sad! It’s almost disturbing to see him without his face like that. =(
I do like the drawing depicting the tragedy though. =)
That is tragic! However, I did laugh at the dog’s expression in John’s drawing. I will forever be on the lookout for ceramic dogs when I shop at HomeGoods now!
Sherry, I feel devastated too. That dog was always synonymous with your blog – at least, to me it was…
That is sooo sad!
Mr.ceramic dog may you rest in peace. You will never be forgotten. Maybe replaced, but never forgotten.
Haha. True.

While John’s lovely drawing is quite amusing, the loss of a loved ceramic pet is heartbreaking. *internet hugs*
:( That stinks! Think you can find another one at Home Goods?
Maybe…

My co-workers probably think I’m crazy because I just busted out laughing when I saw that drawing. Awesome. I love how long john’s legs are. I actually did a similar type drawing on my blog today. I’m sorry for your loss.
Those legs are to scale. They’re really that long. Haha.

Such a tragedy. You should at least attempt to glue him back together…such a great pet deserves at least that much. Also, I think John’s illustrations should become more common…very helpful in picturing scenes.
Oh man! That’s the sorta thing where you tell yourself it’s only “stuff” but you still feel majorly bummed about. What a “ruff” way to go! (It was John, with the gallery art, in the hallway!)
Oh no! R.I.P., sweet ceramic doggie.
This may be too early but… there is a light aqua ceramic dog at pier 1 (doesn’t seem to be online).
Ooh. Sounds intriguing…

That was going to be my suggestion as well! Since we lost our tall ceramic look alike in the fire, I’ve had my eyes on this guy: http://www.pier1.com/Catalog/Seasonal/Seasonal/tabid/467/CategoryID/92/List/0/catpagesize/0/Level/a/ProductID/29125/ProductName/Ceramic-Dog/Default.aspx.
So funny…the missing dog was actually the first thing I noticed when the Gallery Wall post went up because that pooch was paw-fect! If only I could trade in my two boxers for two of those.
since the rest of him is still looking perfect, is it possible you could just hang a really cute hat on his “head” for a really gauche accent?
Haha, that’s it! I just need one of those feather boa top hats!

So sad, I seriously said, “Oh NO!” out loud and sat, open mouthed, staring at my computer :(
devastating.
i do think this drawing should have a place on the wall (at the scene of the crime)
Totally! We framed it. In fact you can see it if you click back to the frame reveal post!

oh no! i know how fond you were of your ceramic pup. on a bright note, your gallery wall inspired me to make my own mirrored gallery wall.

So charming! And so awesomely cheap.

Oh no! That is so sad!
May I suggest adding a pic of Mr. Ceramic Dog to the picture wall so that he may live on forever?
We actually framed John’s drawing of “the incident” (on the top of the frame arrangement). Haha love it.

So glad you’ll be able to enjoy that drawing every day! It’s hilarious!!
let’s have a moment of silence…..
now that that’s over, that drawing (and this post) produced some laugh out loud moments. way to turn your traumatic experience into a humorous post.
You crack me up! I have had lots of home revamp casualties…they totally suck and I always cry like a baby until I remind myself to not be so materialistic! He was uber cute too :/ Maybe his ceramic pieces can be turned into some mosaic project!
So sad! I loved that guy. If you can glue him back together, do it! It’ll just add character. (Or maybe be very disturbing. :)))
I know this isn’t the right time to laugh but that drawing had me laughing out loud for a good 30 min. I’m still smiling about it. LOL
You could glue on the big pieces, then fill in the cracks with that stuff they use to fix broken mouldings. What is that stuff called?…That I do not know, but if you look on This Old House (or have you boycotted) you could probably find it easily. Then you could spray paint the whole thing glossy white.
Sure you have a blog to write, a child to tend to, and a list of other projects…but I have to think something you love that much is worth it.
I agree… amazing drawing! All good things must come to an end but at least it wasn’t due to Clara climbing around on it and getting hurt.
March 22, 2011. A day that will live in canine infamy.
My condolences to your broken pup. Hopefully Burger knows it was an accident, and not a sign of things to come!
A legacy has ended in the Petersik household.
Rest in peace (or pieces?), ceramic greyhound. You will be missed. :(
OH NO!! I just gasped and my boss thought something was wrong – “Is everyone okay?!”
No boss, every *ceramic dog* is not okay. :( (now don’t come over and look at me reading blogs while I should be working) :P
Haha, you guys are making my giggle over here. Thanks for the laughs!

Awwwww. Hugs for you! :( And for John, I know he must feel like crud.
I mean, you could always glue as many pieces as you can back, fill the holes and spray paint it. It’s a little industrious but not completely un-doable.
Is it sad that my jaw dropped open when I saw the second pic? I know how much you loved that dog. Poor, poor puppy.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I LOOOVE THAT DOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG :(
Oh no!!! May he rest in pieces ;)
Aww so sorry Sherry!
I actually gasped when I saw his broken face! So sad.
Saaaaad. I’m so glad I had the diagram though- it was really helpful.
Hahahah. That totally cheered me up. John sure knows how to diffuse a ceramic-dog-death situation.

That’s terrible! Poor poochie:( You sound like you are taking it pretty well though.
I thought he was more white. I’ve been walking past a similar one (white) in my Home Goods in MD for a couple of weeks. Always reminds me of you guys. I bounce back and forth between 2 different Home Goods all the time so I’m not sure which one it was, but it is either Columbia, MD or Waugh Chapel.
You have my condolences. I am so sorry for your loss, that really sucks! :(
I had wonder where he had disappear to. How sad that this is why he dissappear. I hope you can find another…search ebay or something…this is depressing.
Sherry I am so sorry for your loss!
OH NO!!! So sad…
Oh no! Who would have thought that your first ceramic casualty would come not at the hands of your baby but…..your husband!!
Did you see it happen? Did John do the slo-mo eyes wide open, what-have-I-done, Sherry-please-don’t-kill-me look? My husband does that when he KNOWS he messed up and for whatever reason it helps me get over it faster.
RIP Mr. Giant Doggie.
Yup, I saw it happen. And I froze and covered my face and there were actual tears and John felt terrible so I started laughing and then he drew me that drawing and it was so funny we framed it. Sometimes you just have to laugh.

“Oh no! Who would have thought that your first ceramic casualty would come not at the hands of your baby but…..your husband!!” this is what I was going to say!
Well done John for making you laugh about it.
RIP ceramic friend.
So sad about the dog!
But a quick question about the sunset photo on the lower left hand side – is it sideways?
Yup, that was when we were hanging the frames with whatever was already in them (the art later got switched out so it made more sense).

This is off topic but have you seen this blog ???

Sorry for your loss, I hope burger is not scared for his life !
Gorgeous! Thanks for the link!

I’m sad for you :( but it did cross my mind that now would be the perfect opportunity to hunt down that gigantic ceramic dog from “Friends.” You know, not to replace old friends but to make new :-p
Sounds like a good plan!
xo,
s
That’s too bad. It’s a good thing you have a concrete replacement :) At least Clara didn’t break it…
So sad! It is amazing how attached we get to some of the decor in our homes! If you can’t glue him back together you can probably find his/her? twin. I’ve seen that same ceramic dog in a shop here in Minneapolis recently so I’m sure that you can find another one. Hopefully for just as good of a price!
I’m surprised John told you he broke it…instead of just trying to save face…
Hahahahahaha. You know I love a good pun.
