When The Thing You Really Want Sells Out

I was going to do it. I was finally going to buy the Coco mirror from West Elm that I’ve been obsessing over forever. Yes, we’re moving, but it’s such a classic piece that it could be hung anywhere in this house or the next one. And I was just gonna go for it- all $199 of it. Even though I’m usually too cheap to buy things full price (even if I’m head over heels in love) I had this whole talk with myself about putting on my big girl pants and bucking up and just splurging for something that I’m 99.9% certain would make me happy for decades. Then I saw this when I clicked the link.

Coco Mirror

No longer available? I want to die.

Have you tried stopping by a local West Elm store? Usually, they discontinue an item online first, even if the “leftovers” are still available in stores.

Give them a call! They probably have limited in stock and as such, are no longer displaying it on the site.

We were eye-ing expensive shelves from Pottery Barn. Right when we were ready to make the purchase, they were shown as out of stock! I called the 800 number and sure enough, they still had them in stock and ON SALE!

Then it was not meant to be. I bet you can find something similar if you look. That mirror probably would have been a dust magnet… or at least sometimes it is easier to tell yourself that in hindsight.

Did you try calling West Elm? I use to work at PBK and they can usually look up and see what stores might have it in stock. If a store has that mirror in stock they can ship it to you. That is of course if you have your big girl panties on but this may be your last chance until one surfaces on ebay (probably at a higher price…)

Sherry, a couple of months ago I saw this mirror at the outlet mall. In Texas, the Pottery Barn outlet has West Elm and Williams Sonoma items in it also. That’s where I saw it. I know you have mentioned a Pottery Barn outlet near you, so I would check there. Hope you find it! I know you probably REALLY want it now that you can’t have it!

Maybe you can make something similar to it & save some money! You would need a round mirror in a frame, some hot glue, and … something to replace the dried coconut pieces… hmmm… bleached leather cut in pointed shapes & formed with some kind of glue? Or you could go for a similar look using stones, shells, or spray painted plant material.

Haha. I don’t mean to laugh, but your story sounds just like me. You know the Andalusia rug West Elm sells in the lovely horizon color? I had my eye on that but it was $249 for the size I needed it in. I finally broke down and bought it but it was on backorder for months. So during those months, I canceled my order. Then I regretted it, so I reordered again. Well it was on backorder for even longer than originally. I went through the canceling/buying cycle one more time, and finally just bit the bullet. So after about 7 months, I’m now the proud owner of the rug and I absolutely adore it as much as I thought I would. Unlike you, my rug is still available, but I’ve been eyeing up that same mirror for sometime as well. I guess sometimes when you see something you absolutely adore, you just have to bite the bullet and get it.

The color might not work for you and a the shipping maybe too costly… no price is listed either.

If it’s meant to be, you’ll track the West Elm mirror down or find it somewhere for probably half the cost. May the decorating gods bless you.

The same thing happened to me awhile back with some Pottery Barn items. Just because it is no longer availible online doesn’t mean there aren’t a few left at stores (and usually on clearance prices). I called Pottery Barn, and they were able to tell me which stores still had it, and I called the store and had it shipped from the store! If all the stores are out, maybe one will pop up on ebay…

If you really, REALLY love it, West Elm actually copied a design of the mirror from a brand called Ochre. It has mercury glass inside of a regualar mirror and a vastly inflated price tag of about $1400.

Alas, we don’t have a local outlet. The closest one is a few hours away, but I put in a call to try to locate one before driving anywhere and West Elm said there might be one on the West Coast and that’s all they saw in the system. So now I’m counting down the seconds until it’s 10am WST so I can give them a call to see. Fingers crossed…

That’s the worst! I splurged on a new dress after landing a new job last week. I ordered it online and got a sweet discount they were offering for 1 day only. I got the email confirmation and everything. Two days later I got an email that they were sorry but the item is now out if stock and they cancelled my order! I had already planned on wearing it for my first day at my new office. Still a little steamed about it…

we bought these west elm medallion curtains on sale from them a while back for this BIG window we have in our living room. I told my husband before hand we needed 4 (because the window was so big -thinking i’d sew or double up two on each side).

he talked me out of it saying the outer curtains (we have a double rod) would make it so you only need 2 panels because they would hide the gap.

needless to say he was wrong and I scour ebay EVERYDAY hoping the curtains will pop up since west elm sold out. grrrr!

any YHL readers out there want to sell me a set 84″ medallion curtains – white linen with gold medallions?? :)
