Young House Love » Our Second House » Finding A Jenn-Air Hood Range On Sale From Craigslist

Finding A Jenn-Air Hood Range On Sale From Craigslist

Woot. We did it. We found a stainlesss steel range hood on craigslist. It’s an industrial strength pro JennAir one (valued at around $350) but we got it for… $60! Oh craigslist, I could kiss you on the mouth.

Vent Hood

The listing said $65, but you know I did the old “how about sixty, we have cash?!” thing when we got there and looked it over… and… sold! It definitely appeared to be purchased but never used (it still had some of the white sticky peel-off stuff on the underside that new hoods have) – although it didn’t look like it had been kept completely protected while it was being stored (there are some scratches on the curved hood part). But those scratches are most likely the reason we got it for such a deal (in mint condition it could have been sold for at least $200). And since we’ll be building a wood hood box around it, those scratches won’t matter at all. We actually love them for allowing us to afford such a fancy pants hood. Wait, you’re stuck on that part about the wood hood box thing, aren’t you?

We’re basically going to try to build a wood frame to attach to the wall and house our new $60 JennAir vent since we looked up some prices for wood hoods that are built by someone else…. and let’s just say I spewed orange juice all over my computer when I caught a whiff of the cost (from here).

Range Hood Price

We’re not 100% sure on the actual hood-box shape (some are boxier and some have that little stem at the top) but we’ll keep you posted. Might just tape out a few shapes on the tile and see what we like.

Oh and as for the two pendant lights we’ll be adding over the peninsula, we hit up one of our favorite local lighting outlets (The Decorating Outlet on Midlothian for any locals out there), where we found the exact same lights we had been ogling in this post about a month ago! We couldn’t believe they had two of them in the same finish and everything. They’re currently $129 here, but the outlet was selling them for $60 a pop. So for less than the cost of one ($120 total) we got two! We think they’re going to make a huge statement in the kitchen, and considering that big box stores are currently selling similar stuff for $100+ each, we thought it was a great deal.

Kitchen Light

The finish that we chose may surprise you (or not, haha) but we actually went with oil-rubbed bronze. Since there are already a ton of nickel/stainless accents in the kitchen (hardware, appliances, the industrial stools) we thought it might add up to a more layered/interesting look to pepper in some ORB. We’re huge fans of mixing metals as long as both types of metal occur a few times so it looks intentional (so there’s not one odd man out while the rest is a different finish, which can look kind of weirdly accidental). So we’ll be bringing in a few other dashes of the rich almost-black finish so it’s nice and balanced looking – especially with the mocha cork floors. We also love that the pendants are hugely visible through the large doorway to the dining room, since that room has things like an oil-rubbed bronze door knob, curtain rod, etc – so they should layer right into the mix.

Painted Door Prog Ins

Now we just have to hang the pendants, wrestle that hood into place, build a custom wood range hood cover, add some floating shelves, finish the trim, lay some cork floors, install the dishwasher, and a few other things that my brain is probably intentionally forgetting to keep my blood pressure down. But we’re getting there! We’re like the blogging tortoises of kitchen renos. Picture us crawling along with little laptops tucked away in our shells. Oh and on the subject of hoods and lights, have you guys be dabbling in those areas lately? Any lucky craigslist or outlet scores lately?

Great progress on the kitchen!! I’m liking all the choices you’ve made. The second photo with the black oven hood and white subway tiles males my heart pitter patter!!

The open shelving is great….I think I’ll wait to see how you like them after you have had them for a bit to see if that is something I’d incorporate in my own kitchen!! Love the look though!!

Everything looks amazing!!! I know this is an annoying comment since you have already painted the kitchen such an awesome color, but have you noticed how many of your inspiration pics are white kitchens??? I just think it would be so dreamy w/ the grey tile . . . and a fantastic pop of color in a roman blind over the sink window . . .

OK, promise I won’t post again about white kitchens again . . . We all live vicariously through you guys and feel we can say anything, huh????

You all are so creative, practical, and inspiring!!!

Since we did white counters and white cabinets we’re anti white walls- just to boring for us! Haha. Most of the inspiration rooms have dark counters or veiny marble ones so since ours are flat white we’re into some fun color on the wall- and can’t wait to accessorize our floating shelves with more color to tie the walls in!

Criagslist is so great! I just got a new cat, and she eats like a horse…seriously, I’m pretty sure she’d eat until she exploded. I wanted to buy one of those auto feeders that drops food out at a specific time, but they were super, super expensive…until I found one on Craigslist for $15 bucks (retail $120). It smelled SO SO SO bad but I cleaned it out and now I don’t have to worry about her stuffing her face all day :)

We’d sand it and then use a water-based low-VOC primer like Zinsser Smart Prime and then use a no VOC paint like Mythic or Olympic Premium or Natura in semi-gloss. You can even seal it with SafeCoat Acrylacq (available online) since it’s a low-VOC and non-toxic alternative. Hope it helps!

Being a graphic designer/photographer–I was looking at the cover and the colors and design and clever title (which escapes me now) and even tactile part–(not penny tile). You told me it was a proof and I told you it looked finished. I flipped inside through the pages. If I dreamed the actual book cover, do I win a kitchen redo or a white ceramic animal?

Eye catching. It will look great in your kitchen.

Love your plans and everything of course looks great. I might have something for you to consider (assuming the exhaust hood isn’t already installed) … based on the age of your house you might want to have the vent work for the hood cleaned prior to installing your new one. The microwave exhaust combo type you previously had gets smells / grease out of the kitchen / into the vent but often doesn’t have the power to fully exhaust it to the outside, so there’s typically a buildup in the venting, and at some point you may start noticing an odor from it inside. If you think you might ever consider cleaning the vent work it would be $wise to do it now because once you get the hood and your wood surround up, taking it all down is way expensive. Not many companies offer the service in Richmond but I had it done as part of our fire recovery (from the dishwasher fire) so if you’re curious I’d be glad to share the company name with you. Can’t wait to see the completed kitchen!

We owe just about every part of our entire lives to Craigslist! I tried to document the extent of all Craigslist has done for us when we found someone selling the exact kitchen sink we were about to order for twice the price back in September (http://rivaeve.blogspot.com/2011/09/assiduous-persistent-industrious.html) but I got overwhelmed and had to end the list by making sweeping generalizations. And after I made that list, we found our stainless steel french door fridge on Craigslist for an amazing price – and we were totally able to buff out all the scratches in the door to make it look brand new again!

I scored the mercury glass West Elm pendant light at our local Pottery Barn outlet for $35. list $99. plus 4 West Elm Porter dining side chairs for $36 each with gray linen/cotton slipcover for $14 each. Someone bought more of them and they are listed on e-bay right now for $299 for a pair of chairs with the slipcovers! Trouble is I can’t find more slipcovers because they are discontinued. I’ve tried calling PB outlets all over the country and a countrywide craigslist search. will have to have them made as I would like some cotton canvas ones. if anyone knows of where to get good slipcovers please post. thanks! Craigslist, $100:
I recently got an amazing Drexel mid-century dresser with 11 drawers and a huge matching mirror for a tiny room that we’ve turned into a walk-in closet. Best part was that I saw the SAME one on Emily Henderson’s Secrets from a Stylist show the next day. I was gasping, pausing, and yelling for my husband to come look! He thinks I’m a nut. ;)

    Thrift Store, $40:
Yesterday, I picked up a teak patio set with an extension table, four chairs, and a bench. We just moved into our house and it’s the first time we’ve had a patio. I knew I wanted teak furniture for this space – but thought the cost would prohibit us from doing so. NOT SO! Thanks to off-season shopping, I scored HUGE!!!

Can’t wait to see how you box out your hood…we have one in our kitchen but I’ve been fantasizing about removing the box and replacing it with a streamlined stainless version. Grass is always greener, I guess!

P.S. Love the teeny tiny smiley at the bottom right of the page.

Ok, im really curious to how you guys are going to do the floating shelves. Are you going to make an ikea purchase or use Ana’s DIY shelves? I’ve just had an issue with them sagging. They are super stable and wont go anywhere but its an obvious droop… especially when you start adding weight to them (in your case, plates, bowls and cups get pretty heavy!)

i’m sure you will anyway – but let us know the details so i could maybe figure out how to fix mine!

what an awesome deal! You all are sooo creative and hard working, it amazes me.
To pass along wisdom from my designer a few yrs ago when I wanted to put the same sort of hood over my cooktop in my kitchen w 8-ft ceilings: “most of the magazine photos are of 9-12 foot ceiling-ed kitchens so those hoods look marvelous. Yours will have to be much shorter because your ceiling is lower…proportions have to change.” IMHO, Sherry, you may wish to go for something like the first photo because it is “stockier” than pics 2 and three, and you’ll have more room for the design. if you do pic 2 or 3 or one of the drawings, you’ll have to really shorten the whole thing so much that much of the design will be lost, and it might look more like a little hat than a lovely design feature. Love, love your penny tile!

We built our range hood cover a few years ago. I bought inerts for a hood which included a stainless metal box for the underside, fan, light and filter. I bought mine on eBay for about $200 or so. We used a 2×4 structure attached to the wall and then clad it in 1/2 plywood followed by trim pieces painted to match our Kraftmaid cabinets. We also used some leftover trim from the cabinets. We also added a plate rack around it. Here is a link to the pictures:

I thought it was pretty straight forward, after I triple checked all the dimensions.

Sherry, I’d love it if you posted a bit of detail on how you’ll patch up those holes from the light fixtures that were removed/no longer used. Beautiful pendants, great prices, you guys are the best!

Hi John and Sherry! When we remodeled our kitchen in DC (we now live in Ethiopia and I’m pretty sure that I’m your only dedicated African-based reader. Seriously. Never miss a day.)we bought a beautiful wooden range cover for $270 from Outwater Plastics (http://www.outwatercatalogs.com/lg_display.cfm/catalog/Outwater_Plastics_2011/page/352)

I know y’all are DIY experts and I love a great building project, too…but this was too easy to pass up for us! Good luck with the rest of your kitchen! I’m in love with the penny tile and I’m anxious to learn how you plan on anchoring shelves without cracking it.

I was reading through your comments last night, and I was inspired to check craigslist for appliances.

My heartrate increased when I saw my ideal oven- dual fuel, downdraft vent, stainless steel, and Jenn-Air to boot.

Thanks for the inspiration!! I’m so excited about our new oven. (and $1695 SAVINGS!)

Y’all thought about using some the extra matching wood you have left over from cabinet de-con to construct the hood? A free and hopefully cohesive option depending on 1)how much you actually have left over (I had the impression it was mucho) and 2) what style exactly you’d be going for with the hood. The kitchen looks awesome- you guys rock.

Aw thanks Todd! It’s a good thought, I wish we had more! It was only about a two foot-long planks, so we’ll need more than that, but it hopefully shouldn’t be too expensive!

Hi, Guys! So excited to see that you’re building a wood hood. I’m planning to have my carpenter build mine (my version of DIY, lol) when I finally find a range I like/can afford. I was set to order an 800 CFM insert for it (that’s what you call the part that goes inside the wood surround) but then began learning about make-up air. (You can learn more than you ever wanted to know about make-up air from the knowledgeable posters at Gardenweb’s home forum.) I called my city’s building department and found out that our city’s code requires make-up air for any hood over 400 CFM! When I checked your Jenn-Air’s model number, it looked like it was 400 CFM, so you should be okay. Curious, though, if it is an insert or not. If it isn’t, I don’t see why you still can’t build a wood surround, but I would be interested to know what adjustments you would need to make. Thanks for your feedback. Looking forward to following your project. I LOVE me some beautiful wood hoods!

We believe it’s not an insert since the placement of the buttons and designs make it appear as if it was supposed to be seen, but building a frame around something that’s designed to be seen is ok as long as there’s some good air flow and the intake isn’t interfered with (it draws air up the bottom and it goes into the attic and out a duct, so there’s nothing about a wood frame around the outside of the vent hood that should effect anything! We have heard from many folks who hired a carpenter to enclose theirs like you mention and they all seem to love the result and don’t have any issues! Here’s hoping we have the same luck! Will keep you posted!

I just used the Pottery Barn version of this light in a remodeling project for a client and it’s one of my favorite parts of the room! Can’t wait to see them hung in your kitchen.
