Update: We brought in a few of the items on our to-do list below and it changed everything! Well, not everything, but a few things came out (the brown blanket is history, at least in this room) and a few other things moved around. Gotta love those last minute tweaks. Check out the whole shebang here.
Here’s what things are looking like right now (well, as of an hour ago when we snapped these pics and uploaded them):
Which is definitely an improvement on Monday’s more spartan look…
… but we still have lots to do (an quite a few things aren’t in their “final resting place”) but here’s what we’ve checked off so far:
- Get all of the junk out of there (thanks to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore pickup & moving stuff into the playroom)
- Buy a mattress & boxsping along with a cheap-o bed frame
- Dress said bed with already-owned bedding
- Add shower curtain & other bathroom essentials (towels, new toilet seat cover, etc)
- Paint the room
- Hang curtains
And here’s our outstanding to do list:
- Hang something above the bed to balance out the big window to the left (probably a large round mirror to soften the harsh angles)
- Add a nightstand & table lamp (here’s hoping we actually get around to this one)
- Put something on the empty bookcase between the bathroom door and the bedroom door (which will eventually be switched out for a proper dresser that we can use to store a ton of stuff)
- Wash and hem the curtains
As for the room’s layout, we tried about a million different things (bed placed diagonally in the corner, bed on the other window wall, bed centered on the back wall, etc) and this is the configuration that we loved most. Especially once we added in things that we knew we’d be including, like our green headboard (see how we DIYed that here) and our old yellow Pottery Barn rug from the living room (since we’re due to get a rug much bigger than 5 x 8 in there for Karl).
The off-centered, foot-of-the-bed rug placement wasn’t exactly intuitive, but we loved the rug so much with the walls and the bedding that we vowed to make it work. Bringing in those two slipper chairs that used to live in the living room (and squishing them together like a loveseat) helped to make sense of the rug placement and add balance to that side of the room. And once we introduce a night table to the left of the bed we think it’ll look even more balanced and make more sense in the space. Speaking of balance, we can’t wait to hang something above the headboard as we mentioned up in our little bulleted list. It’ll help balance out the window to the left of the bed, and a large round mirror is at the top of our list (for the nice curves it’ll add to a room with so many rectangles and squares).
We also added a $10 white bedskirt from Target to complement all of the existing bedding that we already had from our old guest room (the brown and white blanket is from Bed Bath & Beyond back in the day, the white comforter is from Ikea, the printed pillow cases are from Pottery Barn, the yellow pinwheel pillow is from Target, and the long blue pillow is from TJ Maxx a while back). The bedding isn’t 100% finalized, we just threw everything that we already had on and though it looked kinda fun. Who knows where we’ll end up tomorrow after we finish those last few to-do list items though…
Psst- There’s already been an update and a few of the bedding items have been switched out – check out this post for the room as it looked when our guests arrived.
Oh and the curtains are from Ikea.
They were $39 for two, which makes them $19 a pop. Not bad for extra long 95″ curtains (86″ ones never quite do it for me since I like them hung extra high to make standard ceilings like ours feel taller). Of course I still have to wash and hem them. Ack. And add crown molding above them – but that’ll have to wait a while.
When it comes to the little things, we even switched out the hardware on the closet door from this basic brass pull…
…to this cute lime greeny-yellow one (with oil-rubbed bronze hardware to match our curtain rods) for $1.25 at Hobby Lobby. Oh and speaking of those curtain rods, they’re from Target for just $9.99 a pop.
I’m off to finish those last few items on our to do list (and move things around for the 100th time), but I’ll leave you with this pic of what the room looked like just eight short days ago:
How crazy is that? You’ve come a long way baby.
It’s very cheerful, and I love the colors, but it’s really overstimulating. There are too many different patterns (and each a different color also) going on.
Wow, how fantastic! I love the combination of colours and I think any guest would be lucky to stay in such an awesome room.
So fabulous! You have, in fact, inspired me to get moving on painting our spare rooms. Thanks for the inspiration to make a bold room. I’m so excited to start our guest bedroom transformation. Everything in that room looks amazing!
LOVE LOVE LOVE! This room is perfect!!!
I’s so cute! I just love the wall color. Even more now with everything in the room to pop off it.
All I can say is “WOW!” I totally gasped a little when I saw how it all turned out. I liked the color in-progress, but with all the extras, I think it is just fantastic. I wish I could get more bold with my wall paint, I always opt for neutrals, but my heart loves all the color!
I LOVE the new curtains. They really add some “light” to the walls, and those Pottery Barn pillowcases are to die for.
And, since the yellow rug moved into the guest room, I can’t wait to see what is by Karl! :D
Hope Clara has fun with her grandparents and that you two get a date night!
I would LOVE to be a guest in that room!
I love it! Everything looks great and I really do like the not so matchy-matchy feeling. The only thing I would change would be the brown blanket. Something about it doesn’t seem right– I’d vote for a bright yellow or green throw at the end of the bed. Who knows though once you add the wall art and other accessories it might really work!

It looks great. I have to tell ya….when I first read the bulleted lists of what you want to add, I thought you meant a mirror literally OVER top the bed. I had to re-read it a few times. I was like, ” whoa!! Hey there Jon and Sherry. Get on with yo’ bad selves”……and yes, I really did just say that. This is where my husband would look down, walk away, and pretend not to know me.
Hahahaha. A mirror on the ceiling above the bed. Hahaha. Yeah, not so much.
Love it! It’s so fun, and to think, it’s not even finished… This is better than most of my “finished” rooms! :)
I was just introducing your site to my coworker (Yep we’re burning the midnight oil so to speak.) She just bought her sofa from Ikea, so I mentioned Karl and your yellow Target pillows. She loved the combo, as did I. But now the pillows are living in the guest room! I loved them on Karl. Maybe they are just visiting the guest room?
Either way it looks awesome! Your parents wont want to leave!
All of our pillows are nomads in this house. They travel from room to room all the time!
Love it! Great job, guys! It’s great to see you take a bit of a risk and have it pay off in such a big way:)
This room is like a big breath of spring! I LOVE it and am storing it for inspriration in the future. Love it to pieces!
LOVE IT! Quick question, do you think you will paint the bookshelf down the line or leave it as is?
Down the line we actually plan to replace that with a proper dresser (maybe rescued from craigslist) for a lot more storage and more visual weight on that side of the room. Someday…
I have to admit…I don’t like it either. You guys are usually pretty spot on, but this feels very circus-like to me. As if you guys have just thrown everything colorful you could find in there. You guys are the ones who ultimately have to love it though.
Teresa @ Teresa Tastes & Travels says
The room looks just fabulous. Your family will love staying there.
Yay for the yellow rug finding it’s new home! Does Karl have a new rug underneath him yet? If he does I’m sure a post will be up about it in the near future, but I just can’t wait!
Not yet, but we’re on the hunt!

Love. It. It makes me think of Anthropologie. I also love the Hobby Lobby knobs–not gonna lie, I totally walked around with the same ones forEVER last week when I was there! Would it be wrong to plan a room around knobs?? Enjoy your parents’ visit!
Haha, no way. If planning a room around those cute knobs is wrong, I don’t wanna be right!

i love the wall color, but I have to be honest that this is the first room of yours i’m not liking at all, but hey this is your house and as long as you guys like/love it, then that’s all that matters…
That is all. :)
Actually, it’s not – I really love the yellow in the bedroom, and the brown too – both of those tie the room into the bathroom. I really want to get those pillow cases – here’s to a good online search!
This room looks so great, guys. Love it!
Its cheerful and charming, and I think guests will be excited to walk into such a fun room!
I love it! It’s so happy looking! And it looks like I might have to make a trip to Target to pick up that bedskirt.
Wow, what a great start, I can’t wait to see it all pulled together. Rock on YHLovers!
I love the coloring of that room! It’s so bold yet so whimsical.
Love the colours! The whole thing is so bright! And I think all the patterns work so nicely together… or in the case of this room, ‘play’ so nicely together!!! Great work.
Any idea what you might hang over the “loveseat”?
No idea yet. Maybe a cluster of framed maps from our calendar that we bought last week. Definitely don’t have time to tackle that by tomorrow though…

I really love the mix of patterns and the way the Pottery Barn pillows tie in all of the colors. Looking good!

Still LOVING that color- and what a great Ikea find!
Erin @ Where Beauty Meets Function says
I love it!!! That color is so beautiful and now with all the stuff added in, it’s so fresh and cheerful!! :)
Also, I think you did a great job of coordinating the room! The coverlet on the bed plays off the rug, which halve a dot type pattern like the curtains and the pillows on the chairs and the bed and you have yellow in four places. It Rocks! BTW, where are the pillow cases from?
They’re from Pottery Barn a while back. They were actually a gift from John’s mom and sisters. Love them!
I think the only part that doesn’t do it for me is the brown blanket. It doesn’t seem to go with the other bright, cheerful colors… which is a shame since it matches the new shower curtain. I love that green headboard.
What a fun, inviting room for guests. I’m sure they’ll love it.

The wall color is my favorite element. Would love to see the color of the headboard more integrated, too.
Great job in pulling it all together. Nothing like working towards a guest’s arrival as a deadline!
LOVE those curtains! At first I wasn’t sure about the circles, but I’m sure in person the embroidery reads really nicely! What is the name of that Ikea print?
We’re not sure of the name of the curtains. Maybe Henny? That sounds vaguely familiar. Maybe they’re on ikea.com?
I think they are these:
Yes that’s them! In person the dots are really cool crosshatched designs. You can kinda see it in the close up pic in this post.

I LOVE it!!!!! It’s beautiful and happy and fun! :)
I absolutely love it. I think the pillowcases really pull all of the fun colors together. I love love love the headboard!
Holy cow! It looks GREAT! Love it! I couldn’t believe when I saw those Ikea curtains. Isn’t the nearest Ikea to you like an hour away or something? You guys HAVE been busy!!
It’s two hours away actually! Haha. But John’s parents live right near it so we get to drop in all the time!
I would completely love it without the brown-and-white blanket over the bed. That is bugging me, but I am totally all over that teal-and-yellow thing right now and I think it looks great on the whole. I would be very happy to walk in there as a guest. :)
Totally agree. The room is bright and fun, but the brown’s throwing it off for me.
Agree 100%! I’m really loving the walls and the funky bright colors and patterns, but the brown blanket is just one pattern too much in my opinion. Maybe it’s too close to the pattern on the rug or something?
I had a feeling a lot of readers were going to be thrown by the different decorating style in the new house! I’m really loving all the new stuff though, very interesting :)
P.S. I LOVE that the red on the fan/light pulls echoes the red on the flower pillow. I’m sure accidental, but it’s a sweet tie-in and looks intentional!

Love it! All the color looks great. I was just wondering though, where did the Clara Rug go in the new house?
That’s in our insanely cluttered playroom. Pics to come someday… when we get our acts together in there!
oooooh….super cute! such a happy space:)
I love it! it’s much fresher and fun than your previous guest bedroom which i liked. Somehow this pops more and seems to have a lot more personality!
The rug seemed a lot more subdued in your previous house and now it seems so vibrant….too bad i haven’t been able to find it.
Holy pattern overload, Batman!
Cait @ Hernando House says
Love it! It’s a lot darker than our guest bedroom, but I still really like the wall color! The yellow rug looks awesome in there, too.
I’ve been checking your page all day, knowing you guys were probably working on the guest room! I think it looks great, especially for how much time you had to complete it! Your guests will be very happy to stay there :)
It’s so cheerful which I think is great for guests! Is this room south facing by any chance? It seems to be flooded with sunlight.
Yup, it’s south and east facing. Surprisingly bright for just one window per wall!
LOVE IT!!! Sheer energy and enthusiam bounce around in this room! :) Well done you two, and thanks for the inspiration!

Looks great! Very colorful and cheery! As for a nightstand, why don’t you use the white round table that used to live in the den that replaced the wicker hand me down? A thrift store lamp spray paint the base any color and viola!
We tried that guy. Too tall. Sad face. We’ll share pics of all of our nightstand attempts someday. As soon as we actually solve the problem. Haha. Time’s a wastin’!
How about the little marble one? Posh guest room with a marble nightstand?!
Wow! I love it! Wanna come decorate my house??….I could use some help….make that a LOT of help!
