My luckiest moment was picking up what looked like an old print for $5 at an estate sale. When I got home and removed the frame (and glass), I realized it was an original painting! It even had the artist’s fingerprints in paint on the back. I re-framed it and still have it hanging above my fireplace. Yay!

My luckiest moment (so far–there’d better be more!) was picking the absolute BEST countertops ever for our kitchen. (Of course I can’t remember what they are–other than made by Vangura . . .). You have to get down to eye level to see if they’re dirty (which they always are)–I couldn’t have made a better choice since my number one objective was to not have to be wiping them down every 15 minutes.

I live in Brooklyn New York and have been incredible good luck when it comes to finding mirrors. I 6 very large mirrors in my home, some hanging on the walls, some so tall and large I have them on the floor- leaning against the wall. Of all these mirrors I have only paid for 1 of them- and only $20. The rest I’ve found outside about to be thrown away. They’re all in great shape, mostly old and ornate, and to me its inexplicable why they were thrown out in the first place. One of them- my favorite- is an 75lb antique! Almost 8′ tall and 3′ wide with huge wood trim. I found it outside a penthouse in Manhattan that was being renovated and carried it home on two subway trains.

I think just being lucky enough to pay our mortgage every month, take care of our kids, provide for our needs… so many people don’t have that. Additionally we have some truly wonderful, supportive and generous church friends who are helping us out with an interest-free home improvement loan so that we can fix up our backyard and remodel both bathrooms. Truly a blessing along with helpful and supportive family members who are showing us the ropes with the remodel.

When we bought our house I had been looking for a lounge chair to put out by our new pool. It was the first time I’ve ever had a pool. I couldn’t find one I liked in our small budget.
When we finally moved into the house I got a chance to really explore all the nooks and crannies. Tucked in the corner of the house buried under some palm leaves I found a chaise lounge that the previous owners had left behind in perfect condition! Little bit of soap and water and that baby was good to go! I was so lucky and happy!

We had almost given up on finding a house in the small town we were relocating to – everything we even remotely liked was way out of our price range. As my husband was driving home from work, he took a wrong turn and saw our dream house with a “For Sale By Owner” sign out front. We took one tour and were hooked – and it became ours for way less than what we thought we’d have to spend on a house! Ka-ching!

We just closed on a “new” house on the 18th & ripped up the carpet right away. Most of it had nasty glue on it, but the guest room had lovely floors under the carpet, which was a nice find! :)

JOSS ME! We were hugely lucky to get our 3000 sqft house on 3.8 acres for a killer deal since it was a double foreclosure (the previous owners foreclosed, then the bank that owned it foreclosed, so the price was lowered numerous times until it showed up on our radar). And our real estate agent was so awesome, we wouldn’t have won the bidding war without her!

Sadly, most of my furniture was handed down or is from Ikea. When my hubs and I bought our house 6 years ago, we only spent a lot of $$ on our bedroom furniture, which we hope to keep forever.

Does it make me a nerd that when I first saw the headline I thought you were doing a Joss Whedon give-away? :)

My luckiest home-related moment is that my mom owns a number of apartments so I’ve been able to decorate, garden and do all kinds of stuff I might not be able to do in another rental. (Plus, it doesn’t feel like rent is going to waste, since it helps mom pay off the mortages!)

My fiance and I moved back to the DC area after a couple years of living abroad and decided not to bring any furniture with us (since it was mostly IKEA and the shipping costs were prohibitive) – lucky for us, between our landlady’s willingness to sell us most of the furniture in her one-bedroom apartment for $200 and the few pieces of my fiance’s grandmother’s that were in storage, we got away with not having to buy any new furniture right away! Now that we’ve been back a couple years, we’re slowly replacing the old with new pieces that we like a lot.

We lucked out and found our new (to us) house the very day that it was listed on the market. We still had a bit of a bidding war, but we won at a price we were comfortable with and are slowly making it our home.

My luckiest moment was when the plumber kept delaying the day he was going to come out and fix our spa tub. On one of his return calls he mentioned he thought the motor was air locked. I looked up on the web how to fix it and messed with it 15 minutes. I was so excited when I fixed it! Had to do a dance and brag to my husband.

Our luckiest home improvement event was getting our home. I fell in love with it and felt total peace the moment I set foot indoors, yet found out that same day there had already been an offer on it. As it would turn out, that contract fell through a few days later, and within a week of looking at the home we had a closing date just over a month later! We still LOVE our home, but still need to do a lot of things to it. (-:

After a bad break up with my boyfriend of over 8 years I was on the look out to purchase some property. My budget was small and I was certain I would be relegated to condos and lofts but then this short sale popped up on this cute house and after 3 months of patiently waiting it became mine! People still don’t believe me when I tell them the awesome deal I got!

My husband and I got INCREDIBLY lucky almost two years ago when the builders of our community were basically trying to give away houses. Two days before we decided to start house-hunting the builders reduced the prices of the remaining town homes by almost $100,000!! Living in a pricey area like Annapolis, MD, most of the homes we never imagined we could live in such a nice place. Decorating has been SLLOOOW-going since only a few months after we moved in (and we got married literally 30 days after closing on our house) my husband was laid-off and basically every penny has gone to the essentials. Luckily we have each other and a lovely (yet a little empty) home. We’ll get there one itty-bitty project at a time. Head up, right? ;)

JOSS ME!! The shower curtain gives me so many new ideas for my tiny little house. I want to change so much and this could help my very slow progress pick up.

Our luckiest moment was when I found our house. Our realestate agent hadn’t even found it. We had looked at about 7 houses that day and nothing was right and as we were about to leave (my husband had already left to run some errands) I mentioned our house. We swung by and the owners were still home and gave us a personal tour. I made my hubbs rush over and we made an offer thta night. They had literally just placed the house on the market and they hadn’t even had time to put a for sale sign up
