Our luckiest was some of the sweet hand-me-down furniture we got, including a nice, reclining, modern leather sofa from my parents. Seriously awesome…and free!

“JOSS ME!” my luckiest moment was getting a job at my favorite antique furniture store just for wearing the right (crazy) hat. I have so many great pieces of furniture since working there.

My luckiest score is when my aunt gave me her early 60’s mid century modern teak platform bed. I love that thing and have purchased most of my bedroom furniture vintage so that it will go well with the bed.

We got soooo lucky in finding our house. The buyers had just dropped the price $20K, and we’re eagier to sell. We never imagined we would have as much space as we do. It’s amazing!

My luckiest furniture find was a giant solid wood teacher’s desk-in perfect shape. One of my coworkers came around one day asking if anyone wants to haul away a free desk from her house. My policy is to never say no to free furniture, so I went to pick it up, and I couldn’t believe what I had scored!

I was head over heels for a lamp at Pottery Barn, but it was $179! Yikes! The very day after I spotted the lamp at PB I went to Goodwill in a near by town and scored a lamp almost exactly the same as the beloved PB one! I mean SOOO similar! It was fate!

My luckiest home moment is the day we moved into this great neighborhood! Our neighborhood has such a wonderful community feel; our neighbors raise hens and garden so we have fresh eggs and home-grown veggies at hand. We mow each others’ yards, lend each other trucks or gardening tools, and look after each others’ pets. Love it!

JOSS ME! My luckiest moment was probably when our first offer for our current house was turned down by the owners because of the contingency clause…well, we ended up selling the old house in 2 weeks and meanwhile the current house’s price had dropped $10K! Deal for us!

I think my luckiest home-related story is the timing of finding my house. I found a great house after a year of searching at the exact time that the former owners were desperate to unload it. So I offered a low-ball first offer thinking they would counteroffer and I would accept. Instead, they accepted my first offer. It was just perfect timing. Things haven’t been as smooth sailing as a home-owner as they were as a home-buyer, but you know how it is!

My luckiest moment in home buying (renting) actually just happened last month. My fiance and I are about to make a big move out to Durham, NC from Phoenix, AZ where we know almost no one (2,200 miles!). As a surprising (albeit welcome!) coincidence, my mother has a friend whose mother lives in Durham and rents out town homes to Duke graduate students – which is exactly why we’re moving out there, because Michael will be getting his Ph.D. in the Duke Neuroscience program. We went out to look at the house, and conveniently enough, the current residents are moving out EXACTLY in time for us to move in. It was nice to breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that at least one part of our difficult move was taken care of. AND our landlord is my mom’s friend, so extra benefits there!

I found a solid wood filing cabinet for a song. I needed a filing cabinet for my new home office, but I really didn’t want a metal one. The first time I went out thrifting to find something suitable, there she was…solid wood, from 1960-ish, great condition, only 15 bucks! Happy day!
