My luckiest home improvement was a modest one: In college I moved into my first big-girl apartment and the complex let us alter our walls (paint, nails, etc.). I’ve grown up in homes with white-washed walls and no tape or glue was to touch them. The first thing I did was paint them a cheery baby blue and hung frames of artwork.

JOSS ME! My recent “find” is a several-year swap I just orchestrated with a friend – she’d bought a mid-height loft bed for her son, who slept one night in it then promptly moved himself back to his old bed, now in the guest room. Meanwhile, in a house across town, my son kept asking for a bunkbed, but our ceilings are only 7.5 ft. One day, dear friend realized that we could just swap – her son got back his old bed, she took my son’s antique full bed for her guest room(used about 1 night a year), and my son gets the “bunk” bed until he outgrows it in 2 or 3 years. We then swap everything back and she’ll sell the loft bed. Yay for free!

I would say my luckiest home improvement moment was when I inherited a buffet and china cabinet from my grandparents. at first I wasn’t sure what to do with them so they kind of became furniture in my bedroom, but now I can’t wait to fix them up for my baby due in october, a perfect changing table and baby closet!!!

Our luckiest home moments involve being patient and waiting for that perfect rug/painting/etc to go on sale and getting it for a good price. We are always afraid things are going to sell out, but so far…all we need is to keep an eye on it and have a little patience. Easier said than done, you know. ;)

I stalked an open house for a dream home we made an offer on, and I walked around trash talking the place so noone else would want to buy it. Don’t know if that’s luck or just bein’ ugly – but it worked.

JOSS ME! My luckiest home moment was when we bought our condo in February . . . the complex we wanted to be in was way out of our price range and one week before my bf’s parents (who were helping us with the down payment) came out to house search, a condo came on in the complex that was well under any other one with brand new flooring and refinished cabinets. We instantly put an offer in, and have now been happily living there for almost 6 months, loving it more everyday!

My boyfriend and I lucked out and found an (inexpensive) apt in brooklyn which was inhabited by a Mark Jacobs designer and a Ralph Lauren interior designer. They painted/wall papered the walls, added built in shelves, even a custom made rug!! They left all these goodies to us! AND just this weekend we bought a couch off our neighbor who was moving out of town. It was hard to decide if it was going to match perfectly or clash entirely — and to our luck it matches perfectly! And is super comfy!

JOSS ME! Our luckiest home improvement moment is actually home improvement MOMENTS. My husband and I met in college while volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Not only did that bring us together, it also helped us meet up with others who were very handy. Those friends have now helped us re-roof our house, paint the wooden exterior siding, rewire electricity out to our detached garage, and this past weekend they were over to help completely reconstruct our front porch. It’s nice having free labor. Well, we buy them pizza and beer and such, but I still consider that free labor. :)

JOSS ME! We are at the very beginning of our homeowner days (just bought our house under a year ago, so no big scores yet.) However, when we first bought our house using grandma’s hand-me-down furniture, we were in desperate need of a coffee table. Found an AMAZING one at a thrift store for $15. Perfect condition!

My luckiest find was a vintage globe lamp at a thrift store for $8. It is wonderful and gorgeous and fantastic, and best of all, it works! I had wanted one since I first saw one in the opening credits of “While You Were Sleeping” when I was 12. Since the same lamp I have goes for a few *hundred* dollars on eBay/Etsy/etc., I feel very lucky to have grabbed mine for under $10!

We’ve had lots of lucky moments, but one of my favorites was scoring an awesome teak rootball coffee table at local store, which is awesome for inspiration but always way too expensive for me. We got the table for less than 50% of its ticket price and told each other “Merry Christmas!”

We hit a stroke of luck when wanted to order tile for our foyer to match our adjacent kitchen backsplash, but our local Home Depot no longer carried it. Boo, that could have been disastrous! Luckily, it was still available at another store, so our local HD had it shipped to them, and I picked it up a few days later. Lucky moment #1. Ready for lucky moment #2? When it arrived, it was not only on sale, but on final closeout for a grand total of– get this– ONE CENT PER BOX!! No kidding!

Needless to say, we ended up taking the entire palate instead of just the boxes that we needed, and put the rest up for sale on craigslist. The money we made on that more than paid for the rest of the supplies we used to put the tile down! Talk about a lucky break (I guess that would be lucky moment #3!!). That kind of stuff hardly ever happens to me, I was so stoked, plus the floor turned out beautifully!

Our luckiest home-related moment had to be when we were apartment hunting in Atlanta. Our realtor suggested walking around neighborhoods we liked to see if anything was for rent, and we stumbled on the BEST apartment–hardwood floors, two fireplaces, stainless appliances, granite counters. And it was in our price range! We called about it immediately, ended up being the first people to see it, submitted our application, and ended up at the landlord’s house at 11pm signing the lease. Lucky, lucky!

Luckiest home improvement moment is managing to repair a old headboard and footboard my brother-in-law used as a kid for my daughter. I am not handy, my husband knows nothing about fixing things, and the wood was split in several spots. I managed to repair and paint it all on my own. Now it looks great in my daughters room. A close runner up is selling our first house in two weeks in the middle of winter!

My luckiest finds for my house came from the reuse center in town – a midcentury dresser for $60 (I’ve seen similar selling online for over $1k!) and a buffet for $20 which I painted International Orange as a nod to my days in San Francisco.

    Thanks!
