My husband and I went to check out our local habit for humanity restore for the first time one day. When we walked in the first thing we saw was a gorgeous white bed frame. We looked at it and noticed it did not have a price tag so my husband went to ask an associate. He said that the guy who usually does the pricing wasn’t in that day so he would give us the bed frame (head board, foot board, and railings) for $35. SOLD. We then started loading it in the truck and realized it was a crate and barrel king size bed for only $35! Needless to say I was completely ECSTATIC!… JOSS ME!

We got our first house at a great (ridiculous) price, which allowed us to sell it at a great big profit to buy our current house. And even though we bought at the top of the market, we have loads of equity. Yay!

not only did we sell our first house after negative one days on the market, but we stumbled upon our second one while looking for a rental in the same hood. it had been on the market two days and we scooped it up! (which we wouldn’t have been able to do had we not sold house #1)

I had been wanting to paint our living room for a long time, but with 15 foot ceilings it wasn’t a job I was looking forward too. Just about the time I made up my mind to do it, a HUGE hail storm came through our town and the hail was so bad it went through our roof and actually knocked down some of the drywall IN the living room. Insurance paid to have it repaired and (ta-da!!) repainted! I got my new living room paint and i didn’t have to do any of the work!

Getting our 2nd house was super lucky…had a buyer for our first home that made us jump through hoops…finally closed almost 3 months after we were originally scheduled…all while we had everything packed up in a POD for months…and I was 16 weeks pregnant and sleeping on a air mattress for 3 months!!! Needless to say we didn’t think we were ever going to get in the new house but we finally did…and 3 years later and we still love it more than ever!

I’m still pretty new to the whole DIY house stuff (ie, we don’t even own our home!) but so far my luckiest find has been a 100% free glider with an ottoman that I found on a porch. The woman had moved into the duplex and somebody had carelessly left all this really nice stuff, and because she didn’t need it the lady gave it away! I was about 30 weeks pregnant with my son and had been moping because we couldn’t afford to buy the glider I wanted, and LO AND BEHOLD, there it was, for free! OK, I did wind up paying $5 for it by way of “hiring” my friends (who, coincidentally, lived RIGHT next door) help me carry the silly thing up a flight of stairs to my apartment. My now 20 month old loves to sit in it and “read” with his teddy bear, so I consider it a good $5 spent :)

We moved this past February. It only took one day to find the perfect rental townhome in a great area. This home has quickly felt far more like “us” than the big, single family home we moved from. The irony is that we had spent months searching for that home and three years living in it. Sometimes, the right thing just falls into place and it is such a gift!

    JOSS ME!

(long time reader, first time commenter. woot!)

After nine years, we just finished an extensive remodel. We got repeatedly detoured by financial and health issues, changes in employment and general LIFE. This morning, I was organizing photos of the whole remodel and had a sudden realization about how lucky we are. Not because things are new and shiny now.

When we moved in, all of our neighbors were in their nineties. They were NOT excited about the young, unmarried couple that was probably going to have loud parties and be wild. (We didn’t and aren’t, but you know.) After months of waving and saying hello with no response, we finally got to know the precious elderly couple directly across the street, after returning their runaway doggie. They became our best friends, mentors, and we were honored to have them as our best man and matron of honor at our wedding five years ago.

Every single major change in the house over the years has been photographed. And today i realized that that couple is featured in so many pictures! They were here to see every new project – the new carpet, or the wall we had torn down. I used her kitchen to prepare two thanksgivings in a row! They were a constant theme in our growth as a couple, and our progress on this house.

She passed away in 2009, and he has since gone into a nursing home. We miss them every day. (but in a ridiculous, lighting-struck-twice kind of luck, the young man who moved into their place is a wonderful new neighbor!) Over the weekend, I hung up a photographic family tree – black and white photos of our parents and grandparents, etc. That wall includes photos of that sweet couple. They are family.

So our luckiest moment? I could tell you fifty stories about great deals, or realizing that the boxes the former owner left in the basement were FULL of brand new christmas lights, or knocking down walls to find money or a last minute paint change that we now adore.

But the luckiest thing about living here – and my aha moment – is realizing that it’s not about the structure of this house. It’s about the people who we love around this place. Our neighbors past and present. Neigbors who issue standing invitations for every party or picnic. They jump right in to help jackhammer up a tile floor that surprisingly had a FOOT of concrete underneath it. Neighbors that dont go to the grocery store without calling to see if you need anything. and vice versa. They let you use their bathroom when yours is torn apart for weeks. They’re all in when you decide to throw together a last minute sunday night cookout.

People who have helped us turn this crazy broken house into a HOME. That’s our Joss-iest thing.

(holy cow, wordiest first post evah.)

JOSS ME! Our luckiest home move was kicking down a crappy divider wall that was pretty much made of cardboard! I kicked at it relentlessly, my dad caught it and we folded it up and hauled the wall down to the curb! Best day ever when husband came in to the house (we didn’t live in it yet) and I got to tell him I HI-YAH’d it down!
