My grandmother is a realtor and asked if my then-fiance, now husband would be interested in this foreclosed house before she passed the info on to someone who was looking for investments. Heck yes we were. We put in a bid and didn’t get it. We agreed to be the backup in case the winner’s deal didn’t go through, but my grandma said that hardly ever happens so we weren’t too hopeful and kept looking. We found nothing that we liked as much for anywhere near the same price. A few weeks later, my grandma called to see if we still wanted it because the first deal fell through. Now we’re living in the house we really wanted and our mortgage is about $50 more/month than I was paying for my last apartment.

Joss Me! oops, forgot to add my luckiest moment. We snagged a perfect house for A LOT less than the asking price. It needs a lot of updates and work so many buyers were afraid of that; however, thanks to you guys, we took it as a challenge and so far so good. We’re sore and tired, and dirty most weekends but it already looks a million times better and because I have a handy dad and some generous family members we’ve done everything ourselves with only the cost of the actual supplies so far. We’re very proud of our progress and hard work. I’ll send pics once we’re finished (or closer to finished as I feel this will be an ongoing work in progress but once we get it liveable) will post pics.

Our luckiest moment came from what felt like our unluckiest – a contract fell through on a house we were building, but it led us to building the house we are currently in, which really feels like what was meant to be our HOME.

I wanted to make a new headboard a few weeks ago and was really digging the horizontal wooden plank feel (like Tyler used this past Design Star episode in the kitchen)… Driving to work a few mornings ago I passed a scrap pile of perfect width and length wooden planks outside my neighbor’s yard. I quickly got on that, gathered them up and in the process of headboard bliss!

My luckiest home improvement finds have been courtesy of my grandmother, who gave me some family antiques, like an antique medical set, old car horn mounted and framed, and some very old portraits.

Joss me!! I’ve had good luck at yard sales, including a $5 mirror (just when I was looking for something to put at the end of our main hallway) and a $3 teapot (just when I’d gotten into drinking tea daily). It certainly pays off to look around!

As terrible as the housing market is here in Michigan, I was lucky enough to be on the positive side of things. My husband and I were able to afford a home that we otherwise never would have dreamed (and while we were still in our mid twenties). It has enough space to be our “forever” home if we so choose. In a way I also feel pretty lucky that it was outdated on the inside so I could get my project on with inspiration from you guys :)

Joss me! Our close friends knew we were in the market for a house and they wanted us to live close to them. They happened to find an Open House as they were on their way to the playground. Our friend stopped in, chatted up the home owner, took a look around and saw that it was exactly what we were looking for (an old house with lots of character and potential.) She called us and said, “I found your house today – you should probably come take a look at it.” We did, and we got it and 8 years later, it’s still exactly the house for us. Lucky!

Our luckiest moment was finding the exact same 1960s slate at a discount store for $14/box so that we could extend the hearth around our fireplace. It wasn’t large enough for a wood holder, but it’s bigger now!

I’d also say finding Frog Tape was a lucky moment. It made the stripes in our daughter’s nursery turn out perfectly!

I don’t think I can say I have been “lucky” with home improvement/ great deals so I am hoping this can change things! I can be quite creative when it comes to finding discarded items and using them to decorate- like uncovering an old beveled mirror that was in the back of the garage, cleaning the dirt from it and putting in on my mantle!

I guess our luckiest moment was my wife convincing me to go look at our current house while it was for sale 2 years ago. I didn’t want to look because the pictures of the inside were hideous. Needless to say we liked the place and ended up buying it.

My luckiest home …..improvement, find Im about to find out, my uncle has an “old bedroom set” of his gandparents he wants it out of his way so Im picking it up this weekend, his concern is how disappointed I am going to be when I see it,he tells me the top of the dresser is solid marble thats white with some color streaming through it, but…..its no longer attached, I laughed and said Im sure I can find something to do with that marble, he says oh I dont know, its really big and heavy, just a big pirce of idk.. I cant wait to get it….

ME is of course appropriate because I live in Maine. I’m in the throes of decorating four bedrooms and look to your site daily for inspiration (believe me, you’ve been “PINNED”) and this gift certificate would help with so many of the finishing touches. My luckiest of all my lucky finds was going to the Marden’s Surplus and Savage Store and finding truckloads of Maine Cottage Furniture being sold at 60 percent off retail. I purchased a tuffet in a cool blue and ocean print and matching solid blue cordaroy comfy chair. The modern cottage style of these two pieces along with the quality construction made them a great buy….

My luckiest moment was when we changed out a light fixture in our living room (our first lighting project ever). I cringed as I flipped the switch (worried that our unsuccessful attempt would crush the man’s pride) and the light actually came on! My surprise nearly knocked me on the floor. A happy surprise!

Not too many lucky stories to go along with our house yet, but I did find a small side table at a garage sale for $2. The white paint was chipping and it has a few cute details, so it gives a shabby chic vibe that I really like.

My luckiest home moment was finding a rug that I HAD to have from anthropologie. Unfortunately it was $800 so it was a no-go. Then a few weeks later a friend of mine told me that his sister works for anthro and she gets a 40% discount every now and then. They were generous enough to share the discount with me so I got my fabulous rug for a fraction of the cost!

I got super lucky when I found the IKEA sideboard I had been eyeing in the scratch and dent section… The only thing I had to do (besides hauling the already assembled item home in the back of my friend’s SUV) was to apply some goo remover to get rid of the sticker residue from the sales floor. It sits in my living room and houses my TV on top and my DVDs and DVD player in the drawers and cabinets. I can’t believe that I got it for almost 75% off!
