Luckiest moment – I found the most FAB dining room set – glass table, straight black chairs – 6 of them – for $75 – that’s right a whole set (nothing wrong with them) for $75. Not to mention that same yard sale literally gave me a black and gold guilded mirror about 3×4 for $5.

My luckiest home improvement moment recently was a raised bed garden box left by the previous owners. I came home from work one day to a beautiful garden planted by my boyfriend. It’s lucky because the box was left, and luckier because I didn’t have to do any of the planting!

I guess I’ve been pretty lucky when it comes to furnishings. We have gotten a piano, china hutch, our bedroom furniture, and coffee table all for free. People give us the stuff they don’t want anymore and we either paint it or refinish it to suit or style. In turn, when I’m done with something, I find someone else who needs it and give it to them.

In my house, I am alone in all handiwork since my husband is UNlucky (and untalented – d’oh!) in improvement projects. He breaks things, self injures, and has a rather disturbing fear of ladders of ANY height. My luckiest moment is when my fix-it dad retired from full time work and told me he needs home projects to keep him busy! Wahoo!!

The luckiest home improvement moment to happen to me actually ocurred just this past Friday. I was running an errand for work and passed a resale shop on my way. I just happned to glance over and see the prettiest, most amazing mid-century modern low dresser ever! I immediately pulled over and purchased it and an hour later it was delivered to my door! Whoo!

JOSS ME! I don’t have any lucky moments to share regarding home improvement or decor, but we are very lucky to have bought our house in the late 90s right before housing values started going way, way up. Knowing that despite the real estate downturn our house is still worth double what we paid makes us lucky indeed.

Our luckiest moment is getting our new house – it was on the market before we were ready to buy, and went under contract. Then the sale fell through and it came back as an active listing just as we were looking. We saw, we made and offer, and it was accepted. A few hours later another offer came in for more $$$ so the sellers were hoping we’d back out but nope, we love our new house!

Now we just need to sell our first house, so hoping for some more luck there.

The moment I will never forget, is walking into our kitchen after my husband had knocked down the 15 foot Hollywood Junipers outside the window. Not only was there now light, but a view, I couldn’t have imagined! We’re sure that stroke of the chainsaw added 10K onto the value of our home.

I’m in the process of redecorating my 16 year old daughter’s bedroom. Got a free dresser from my mom (that was mine when I was a girl!) and found the perfect desk at a garage sale just down the street. I don’t own a truck, but since it was only a little bit down the road, the seller offered to deliver it to my house for free! I painted both pieces in the same heirloom white color and they look fabulous with her pale tiffany blue walls.

Otherwise, I love scoring this wooden wall art for $25. DROOL http://candyskitchen.blogspot.com/2011/04/living-room-update-its-about-time.html

Luckiest home improvement moment was finding a gorgeous, comfy sofa at a garage sale. They inherited it but it wouldn’t fit well in their home, so it had to go…TO ME. Sheer dumb luck that I happened to be driving by, saw it, snagged it for $180. They told me their dad paid $1500 for it a few years earlier.

My luckiest home improvement happened within the last year when my husband and I were looking to quickly buy a new home within zone of the school district of our choice because our daughter will be starting kindergarten this fall. While talking to a coworker, she casually dropped the comment that she will be retiring soon so that she can spend time at home trying to update it and put it on the market. Well, you can totally see where this is going… :) Her big, beautiful house was within the school zone we had been looking, AND we didn’t have to involve realtors, AND she didn’t have to do any updating! After inspection, we bought it immediately at a low price since we spared her realtor fees and renovation.

I would say my luckiest home project was buying a home that needed either a deck or patio built so we could access the backyard with our 3 kids. When we said “yes” to hosting an outdoor anniversary party for my in-laws, we had an amazing patio created and finished the evening before the big party! Three years later, we can say our home is 10x better because of our time spent on the patio as a family and with great friends.

Luckiest moment was finding my first house after only spending one afternoon looking at 3 houses. It was a great house at a price that I could afford. Thanks to a fabulous real estate agent working on a Sunday tracking down an out of town seller, I got it. And 2 years later, I’m still loving it.

My luckiest recent home improvement moment was this weekend. My husband and I were helping a neighbor move some bulk items to her curb for trash pick up. She mentioned she was about to CraigsList some furniture pieces that had been in the basement for years unused. I was looking for a guest room dresser, and voila she was getting rid of a dresser, and said it was ours! A coat of white paint and it will look wonderful. Thanks neighbor!
