We found our new place and called the landlord about it…as he was listing it on Craigslist! I told him not to bother completing the listing, we’d take it. Pretty sweet deal, too :)

I was thinking of getting a kitchen playset for our daughter, and then spotted one sitting on the side of the road. Thankfully I had just started reading Bower Power, and was totally inspired to take it home and fix it up. A couple of coats of paint, and it’s looking awesome and ready for our little one.

I purchased my first house in the fall and have lots of empty space that needs to be filled! The best thing so far which we are currently reaping the benefits from is our clothesline. It was encredibly cheap and easy to assemble and has already reduced our electric bill. Now, I just need to take care of all the bare walls and empty space throughout the house!

Joss me! Yes – my latest “home improvement victory is not exactly home improvement. But I repaired two pair of Havaianas Flip Flops which had blown out. Using internet directions, I drilled a tiny hole through the existing rubber thing and then (with it pulled down through the hole), inserted a cotter pin through the drilled part and VOILA! Two pair of nice flip flops (with CZ flowers) FIXED! OH YEAH! I’m still excited about it and wanted to share!

I’ve had a few lucky moments.. Was gifted an old antique nightstand/dresser pair that now after some fixing up, painting & distressing is our changing table, found spray paint just the right shade for free at garage sales, and I found a can of paint at my work one day that had been abandoned – just the right shade & just enough to re-do our bathroom cabinets.

Our luckiest house moment was scoring our rental when we move to Portland, OR nearly 5 years ago. We happened to drive by while it was being shown to someone else, popped in and found out that at least 7 other people had looked at it the same day. We wanted it so bad, we offered a few months rent up front. Thankfully it tipped the scales in our favor. It’s a duplex with amazing neighbors, a nice yard in a beautiful neighborhood. While we would love to buy, (it’s taking us a little longer than we expected), we are content staying here for now because we love the space and the fact that our landlord has never raised our rent doesn’t hurt either. And decorating without the option to paint has been frustrating but a nice challenge. We just figured out how to wallpaper with fabric!

I was on the search for a new house in a different high school district for a year before I found the one I ended up buying. Luckily for me it happened during the summer the year before she started high school!!! So her school was not interrupted & she started at the new school her freshman yr!

Joss Me! We were so fortunate to get in the house we are in now. We bought it at just the right time in the market, when the builder was pretty desperate. Now there are ten+ new houses that have been built in our neighborhood, we wouldn’t have gotten it for the price we did if that had been the case when we bought.

We bought our 1st house last month knowing that a neglected vacant property was right next door, but the house was perfect for us and the right price…we bought it 3 days from its listing date. The day we closed at the property we found out the vacant house had also sold and was going to be completely rehabed! very lucky :)

My luckiest home improvement was when I realized that our new home already had two living room walls painted crimson, which perfectly matched the accent pieces that I had been collecting. I know you’ve painted paneling & even made it look doable, but I DID NOT want to paint our paneling.

Joss Me! My husband and I weren’t even married yet and were trying to look for a home to rent in a tiny little area of Tennessee. We gave up and headed back for the the hotel in a few towns over and just happened to pass the cutest old house with a for rent sign in the yard. We called, met the owners, and got a verbal agreement the very next day. We are currently living here and loving it! The only thing that’s hard is not being able to change a lot because we’re just renting- we have SO many ideas we’d start if we owned the house!
