When our house went on the market, we had been looking and looking and looking at dozens of “fix-me-uppers” with zero style and zero character. We got into our charming, unique house the day it went on the market, and got our offer in just moments before another buyer!

    JOSS ME!

My mother recently bought a 3 bedroom apartment and we decided to help renovate (since we renovated our own place!). The apartment came with brand new carpeting but during one of our wall painting sessions, a can of paint ruined a large portion of the carpet in the living room. We were really bummed because the carpet was newly installed and replacing it would eat into our budget. While we were ripping up the destroyed carpet, we found beautiful original hardwood floors underneath! We were so excited because the floors were beautifully kept and all we needed to do was refinish them. Who knew there was beautiful hardwood floors underneath new carpeting?

My luckiest home moment was finding our house. We had been searching for months to find our dream home, something with good bones we could improve on and make it our own, but that was in our price range. Just when we were about to give up, a house appeared in one of our top neighborhood choices, in our price range, and we snatched it a day after it was on the market.

My lucky house moment is that we are renting our current house for $105 less than the owners are paying on the mortgage. It wasn’t selling, and they couldn’t find renters they liked, so they cut us a deal to get us in. WIN.

My husband and I live in a 100 year old gem of a building downtown and we LOVE it. We got married and moved in at the perfect time! It’s hard to get an apartment where we are living now but when we went apartment hunting, we were cnosidering another apartment that was new but had little “character” as my husband and I called it. We had wanted to live in the apartments that were connected with this gorgeous ballroom where an internationally re-nown ballroom team but knew that it was really hard to get a spot. With our hopes high, we tried and succeeded! We’ve been loving our character filled apartment and recently just did a make-over on our living room as soon as school was out for the summer! Furniture moved, two paintings painted and 26 pictures hung!

I had been looking for a reading chair for quite awhile. Since I’m short, I was searching for something low to the ground but still plush. While visiting my grandma one day, I saw exactly what I had been hoping for, hanging out under some old toys. It’s awesome, one of a kind, and super comfy — and best of all, Grandma gave it to me, so it was a free, family piece.

My future husband and I were searching for a house during the $8k tax credit window, and we were approaching the deadline and still hadn’t found one. In fact, we had offered on three but didn’t get any of them. A new house came up for sale on April 29 in the evening, so we went to see it immediately. We had our offer accepted on the 30th, which was the last day to claim the tax credit! We felt very lucky and very blessed… plus it turned out to be the best house of any that we offered on. Funny how God works things that way. :)

My luckiest purchase was my home…on Cottage Avenue, no less! It was the first house I looked at and I immediately knew it was ‘the one’. It was love at first sight! After a few counter offers, I was ready to walk away from the love of my life when the seller eventually caved in and accepted my offer. Best and luckiest purchase I ever made!

After looking at several houses the past two years we had pretty much given up. My mom told me “You will find your house one day, it just hasn’t listed yet”. Then on my BIRTHDAY a house was listed… THE HOUSE!. We went to see it the next day, put in our offer the day after that and that following day our offer was accepted. I felt so lucky! Like it was meant to be :)

My luckiest home improvement was during a kitchen remodel of our 1941 house. We had to remodel for a dishwasher (SO worth it) We took down the walls to the stud boards as a last minute decision to add better insulation only to find the main drain pipe “T” joint that is the sewer gas release and the kitchen sink drain – and eventually the dishwasher drain pipe was basically severed at the joint by rust. Had we installed our dishwasher we would have flooded our basement and ruined our brand new cabinets the first time we ran the water under pressure to that pipe. YIKES! We ended up replacing all the plumbing as a result.

When my husband’s grandmother decided to downsize, we scored on her dining room table and chairs which were just the mid-century modern touch I was looking for to place in my breakfast room. New foam and fabric for the seats were all it took to make it just perfect.

“Joss Me!” We found our first home because my bladder was about to burst! Sooo we took a detour on our drive to go crash my sisters restroom. On the way (took back roads we never take) we came across this homemade FOR SALE sign on a front yard. Long story short. The house was never advertised. The follks (original owners, older couple, cute as ever) wanted us to buy it and we negotiated on a handshake. The rest is history! Greatest little house ever… ;) Next time your wifey needs to use the girls room, you never know what adventure it’ll lead you on…

I am not sure it was luck exactly but my entire family wanted to get rid of my grandparents dining room buffet because they thought it was ugly, and it was. We needed more storage pieces so I decided to say I’d take it. They thought I was crazy, but with a little (ok a lot) of luck and a ton of time and elbow grease I got it painted high gloss black, found some great handles at anthropologie and now they are all jealous! :-)

We are adding space to the dining room and moving the laundry aread from the kitchen to a room next to dining room. Along with that, we had to move a window to a new location. Of course the current windows are all oldies, and we are on a budget (who isn’t these days!?), so our plan was just to get a cheap window. Well when my boyfriend headed to Home Depot, they had a dual pane window for 90 bucks, of course he got that one but it turns out THAT window was in the wrong place and was actually worth 200 Dollars! Lucky for us, we got it for the price where the window was at! :)
