JOSS ME! I found a beautiful solid cherry headboard on Craigslist for free. Even better was having the guy giving it away tell me it originally belonged to his friend who happened to be the heir to the Starkist tuna company. I named the headboard Charlie in his honor.

JOSS ME! I found a Subway Art sign in Charlotte, but it was too large to fit in my Jeep and travel back home to Atlanta with. One day, I was window shopping and came across the same exact Subway art that I thought I’d never see again….this time the top was down, the art fit and I was close to home!!!

Our luckiest home moment was when we found our 100-year-old home the day that we were actually planning to place an offer on a different house. I’m so glad we ended up with this one; it has a better layout, is larger, and is in a better neighborhood. Plus, we can walk to work!

Definitely finding this house – a foreclosure in GREAT shape. It’s in a fabulous neighborhood, one we normally couldn’t afford, and we plan to stay here a looong time. :)

I don’t know if I would say it is our luckiest moment ever, but I did just score a great vintage wall mirror for our bedroom on Etsy (for only $29!…plus shipping). The seller said she got it at an estate sale and estimates it is from around the 1950’s, so I am anxiously awaiting its arrival!

ps- I was excited for it to be Monday today (I know right, what is wrong with me? Who likes Mondays?!) because I knew it would mean new YHL blog posts! I seriously love reading about all of your projects, keep up the excellent work!

Our luckiest was finding a bunch of beautiful, classy artwork in the attic of our home…Okay, not exactly. It was more like tacky “Sin City” style paintings of naked women…but some of our college buddies were happy to take them off our hands and display them in their apartments! :p

Our luckiest moment was my uncle building our deck. He’s a contractor and gave us a really good deal on it (only cost of materials). We never would have been able to afford the size, beauty and quality of that deck had someone else done it. And we got it just in time for summer parties!

    Joss Me,

My luckiest home improvement experience was getting to paint my homes interior before we closed and moved in!

The seller had moved out nearly before the sale (elderly fella staying at the beach) and was perfectly willing for us to make some improvements to his house. Moving into a freshly painted house with our colors and clean trim was just wonderful. Especially since we moved into a long term fixer project that 9 years later still has a list of “fixes” waiting for me and the savings to catch up to. This summer, 16 year old is painting the house exterior as his summer job!

We saw our house online in January, but we’re able to make it there the first week to see it and someone else made an offer. The deal fell through though, and the second time – we were first in line to see it and made an offer! Some people may have been scared away by the wallpaper in every room, but we’re enjoying taking it down and feel lucky there is only one layer in each room unlike other stories we’ve heard.

Luckiest moment… we lived in a small, falling-apart condo with a landlord that put the place ON THE MARKET lock-box and all and never told us. Uh huh. We scrambled to find a new place to live sooner rather than later as we couldn’t bear the thought that some idiot would let out our precious indoor-only cats. But we looked and looked, and could not find anything available in our price range, or we did and then it wasn’t on the market anymore. We’d lived there 2 years and I’d walked by this other complex thinking- there would be nice! And when we were beyond desperate, I opened up the newspaper and found an old-fashioned listing with the complex name…. we weren’t the first to see it, and it was good we had our cat resume because she didn’t originally say cats ok, but when it came down to it… she liked us best. And while we’ve now outgrown the place in the last 9 years, it’s been the perfect place to live… with the nicest landlord ever. (Bonus… she painted colors on the walls… colors we really like, green and pumpkin and ….)

Right after my hubby and I lost out on putting in an offer on a house, we found our current house (we were the first people to tour it after it went on the market!) and we love it. And we’ve gotten 2 solid wood coffee tables for free – one from a dumpster dive and one from my brother- and sister-in-law who are making room for baby in their house.

Luckiest was finding our “forever” house when we weren’t even looking. Seller was desperate to sell and we got the house for a steal. Not to mention it has a panoramic view of the bay area and is an acre lot, and luckily no structural work needed (this was 11 years ago when we were a bit naive and young so we were extremely lucky we didn’t get taken advantage of :)

I’ve lucked out three times in my life: one freebie (an antique firefighter plaque from a collection of my grandfather’s), one cheapie (an odd-shaped ceramic dish in an artichoke color from Goodwill – my favorite), one expensive (a mid-century modern dresser set and mirror that had JUST been placed in a consignment shop I rarely frequent – it was costly, but I love them and don’t regret the purchase)!
