    JOSS ME!!!!!

    Tornado-rific:

My luckiest house moment is probably the story of how we acquired our current home “Stanley”. That’s right, it has a name. Back in April, a tornado blew through Raleigh where we live, barely missing the townhouse we were renting at the time. My husband was out of town, leaving me and our 150 pound Great Dane to cower on the first floor together and wait for impact. Feeling lucky to have been passed over, I headed out the next day on a business trip to St. Louis. On my way home, I was one of the lucky folks to be in St.Louis Lambert airport when the F4 tornado blew the roof off among other things. When I finally got home days later, feeling pretty shaken up and lucky to be alive, my husband and I decided that life is short, and recently life had been pretty crazy and unenjoyable and we needed to make a move to make life a little easier and more fun. Because short life should equal fun life. So, we decided to move to Durham where my job is, reducing my commute to nothing, and his commute to school equally short. One day browsing real estate, I came across the most perfect house that had been on the market for almost a year. It seemed too good to be true, so we drove to Durham immediately to look at it. I was headed off for a two week road trip across the country with my best friend, so we had to make a decision quickly, and went for it. After a series of negotiations, our house deal went through, and I electronically signed the papers to our first home from a rest stop in Gatlinburg, TN. Super excited about our house, and our new life plan, my friend and I headed westward. The trip was great….until Colorado where we got stopped by another tornado. It blew right by us, pelting us with hail (we had to evacuate our car and run through it, leaving us with welts for days) and flooded the visitors center we were taking shelter in through the doors and roof. That’s right Petersiks…I lived through 3 tornados in a month. When I returned home, my husbands and I were packing up to move to our dream house, having a “what are the odds of that” conversation, when it occurred to us that “no really, life is short” and we should maybe start thinking about kids. So we tried. Once. And then moved to our dream home. A week later, we found out we’re pregnant with our own little tornado baby. Tornado house. Tornado baby. I’d say we’re pretty lucky!

My favorite re-do/find… was an old cabinet in my Dad’s basement after he passed away. He had used it to store old paint cans and oil & was covered with years of dirt & grease. I started to strip all the gunk off… and found a beautiful aged (solid)oak piece! This cabinet is 7′ tall, 6′ wide, has 2 doors on the front, with 6 pieces of aged glass (1 pane was broken & we had to have replaced) in each door, 2 bottom drawers, and had the coolest shelf-holders EVER (a really neat zig-zag pattern which we have since learned was how they used to make “adjustable” shelving). We had to have new shelves made, but this cabinet is the centerpiece of my kitchen, and holds glass and dished inherited from 3 generations of hubbies & my families. Absolutely my favorite piece in our home.

JOSS ME!! Our luckiest moment was when we found just what we were looking for in a home! It had been on the market for 1.5 years and I have no idea why no one snatched it up! I guess they were just waiting for us to come and look at it! We got it as a foreclosure for 75k!! We have lots of DIY projects in our near future and recent past.

“JOSS ME!” I often have good luck and am really glad because nesting is my favorite, favorite, favorite thing in the world! And thrift stores, family, garage sales, home discount stores, trips to Mexico, the recycle store, and Cragislist have all made finding treasures absolutely fantastic–and I am so thankful for them!

Joss me! Our luckiest moment EVER in home ownership happened a week and a half ago… We just found our dream house on the market in the *perfect* neighborhood, and we were the ONLY people to go see it before we put in an offer less than 24 hours after it went on the market. It has a great bedroom for our four-month-old daughter, a real living room and dining room, an eat-in kitchen… and all sorts of space for furnishings and decorations we don’t have! This would help us get our dream house looking dreamy, for sure :)

My luckiest moment was finding curtains I liked on clearance to begin with and then scouring the internet to find discount codes. I ended up saving about 90% on them and had them shipped to the store so I wouldn’t have to pay shipping. I was disproportionately excited about it and my hubby just thought I was weird.

Joss me, please! I did actually find my dream house the second it went online. It’s in the neighborhood we had decided we wanted to live in, and I was signed up for email alerts for the area. I was at home with my 6 month old, and got the email, pulled it up – and WHAM! I was in love!! We looked at it 2 days later and within a week papers were signed, and closing date was set! It was a whirlwind.. now I need to furnish this 5 bedroom home!!

My luckiest home improvement moment was walking into our house after spending the day with my mom to see that my husband had spent all day changing every light switch and outlet from the old, dingy “bone” colored switches, plugs, and plates to a nice bright white! It was just what I wanted and I didn’t have to do any of the work! What a good hubby.
