My luckiest home improvement moment was finding the perfect work desk for our home office. The desk was an very sturdy antique dining table with a beautiful dark wood top and dark turquoise legs (the color of our logo). I found it at yard sale for $25.

We just moved into a new apartment that lacks any pantry space to store food. Luckily, we have a stand my parents bought for me a few years ago to store stuff, plus a baker’s rack that my parents no longer needed so we have room for everything! And we didn’t have to shell out cash for those…even better.

JOSS ME! I found an amazing trunk (now bedroom furniture) at an estate sale for $20. The homeowner had mislabeled it, meaning to write $200. She honored the price as listed and I totally scored!

Joss me! My luckiest house moment was buying a house in a great neighborhood with cool people who love to hang out together in our community park. We bought the house because it had the space we need, but if we’d known how great our neighborhood is we would have bought any house here we could find!

Our lucky moment: After the birth of our son we had outgrown our current house. Not much yard space, small family room, small bedrooms etc. but we were lazy and had not taken the plunge of putting it on the market. Out of the blue a realtor contacted us with a buyer interested in our house. We spent a total of one afternoon sprucing stuff up (ie jamming all the toys into the trunks of our cars, dusting light fixtures, etc.). We had an offer within the week and had sold the house in less than 20 days. CRAZY luck, especially in this housing market. We were truly blessed and lucky. The same realtor helped us find a house that fits are current needs so much better. Double lucky!

After drooling over a shabby chic dining set for months but having pennies to make one appear, my luckiest home improvement moment was finding a set of 6 fabulous old chair outside a dumpster which after paint and new seat covers looked gorgeous and then finding a claw foot table on craigslist for $15 to go with!

Getting our house/mortgage was lucky! It was the 2nd house we looked at, fell in love, and it was such a smooth process! Also, 1 week after we signed and and everything went through, the economy went down and they were not offering mortgage loans anymore for awhile! We really got it at the perfect time – wouldn’t have been able to if we waited one more week.

Joss me! My husband and I have been lucky to inherit lots of hand-me-down furniture when we got our first place together after college. It gave us a chance to save our pennies for pieces we really like (and other important things, like our wedding) rather than having to buy stuff we could afford at 22 simply to fill the space.

We were lucky to buy a fixer-upper while we still live close to my in-laws. Without their expertise we would still be living in a dump and now when we’re ready for our next house we know what we’re doing….most of the time :-)

A couple months before our wedding, my fiance and I decided it would be great if we could snag some fabulous looking pallets for some rustic decoration at the event. That weekend we went to the DC Big Flea (a gigantic flea market outside DC). As we were leaving the house, we noticed a perfectly distressed pallet propped up against their communal garage building. We promptly picked it up and put it in the garage! On our way home later that day, we drove past a house that had a pallet leaned up against their trash can at the end of the driveway. We pulled over and snagged another great find! We happily displayed them at our wedding and now I’m planning to turn one into a balcony-friendly vertical herb garden. Lucky me!
