Fab Freebie: Sunny Side Up

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries.***

If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:

Sunny Give Katie Floor

Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:

Sunny Give Store 2

Sunny Give Store

Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.

Sunny Give Clover Floor

But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).

Sunny Give Product Four

So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics courtesy of Sunny’s Goodtime Paints.

    SHINE ON ME!
I just finished painting a big, wood coffee table I snagged off of craigslist for $20! It was the style and solid wood I was looking for but couldn’t find for less than $200 new….a few coats of paint and my cheap finds looks new and perfect in my living room! …wouldn’t mind putting a fun design on it with one of Sunny’s adorable stencils…

I LOVE, LOVE color, and have so much fun with painting. My common space / living area has three, great bold colors, but I think the favorite is our bedroom, where I am dying to try a stencil!

SHINE ON ME! We’ve been updating everything in our house lately. Our walls are a lime/apple green and a sea blue. My dining room table is black with white chairs. I’d love to do a monogram in the middle of the table — ohhh! I can see it now! Every chair, piece of fabric, and furniture has been revamped lately and I’m loving it! I’m a newbie to Sunny, so thank you for doing a recap on her and her great stuff!

PLEASE Shine On Me! I painted a red stripe all around the walls of my boys bedroom. I used painters tape to mark off the area but the paint still bled. I had to go back around with a small watercolor brush and touch up the top and bottom edges of the stripe. It took a good 3 hours of detailed work but the result looks oh so crisp!

    SHINE ONE ME

I stretch fabric over stretcher bars, draw a design in hot glue, let dry, paint over the ENTIRE fabric with a paint color, let dry and peel off the hot glue!
Now your fabric peeps through with your design!

It is the art teacher in me!

I love that I picked up a faded white wicker love seat and table for only $25.00 (I love you Craig’s list)! It had seen better days, but was still in good shape structurally. I easily could have spent $300+ on a new set. Although, with a few cans of chocolate brown spray paint and clearance cushions/pillows from Pier 1, it looks like new and now is our favorite hangout spot when we relax on our enclosed porch. This was one of my first DIY projects, so proud of the way it turned out!

    SHINE ON ME!

Our bedroom came with a few too many built-ins, including built-in dresser drawers. They were “wood” – which is to say, they were technically MADE of wood, and had been painted various colors throughout the years, culminating in a “faux wood” paint job by the last occupants (fooled us – we didn’t realize they weren’t natural wood until we started working with them!). The round boring knobs were also wood.
    So…
We painted the faces of the drawers the same high-gloss white as the moulding around them already was, added cute satin nickel cup pulls, and voila! Huge difference, and a much better fit for our new light-blue-and-white bedroom.

Mine’s a work in progress at this time…I’m doing this cool laudry-closet makeover with a suspended closet organizing system. (I’m really loving suspended decor and furnishings because there is less to move around when I vacuum in addition to the clean floor lines, etc. )

Anyway, I painted the closet a camel color and carried it up and over onto the ceiling for about an inch. I plan to also decorate the corners for some unexpected visual interest (perhaps using a stamp or stencil – still not sure just yet).

So please shine on me. Thanks guys!

My favorite color combo was an inspiration from Pottery Barn to do a lemon/lime theme. I painted the walls a beautiful lime green and then bought towels that were white with yellow polka-dots. It was so cheerful and summery!

    SHINE ON ME

The best use of paint we recently used what painting one to two walls at a time at night after our kids went to bed. Even though we used Aura by Benjamin Moore, we were painting a light color over a dark color and needed 3 coats. It took a full week, but it was so much easier than stressing about child care and worrying if they’d step in the wet paint.

We also put the paint tray inside a huge plastic bin to catch the flyaway paint that can happen when evening out the roller.
