Fab Freebie: Sunny Side Up

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries.***

If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:

Sunny Give Katie Floor

Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:

Sunny Give Store 2

Sunny Give Store

Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.

Sunny Give Clover Floor

But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).

Sunny Give Product Four

So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

    “SHINE ON ME!”

I love to take an image and have it copied to a transparency. Then using an overhead projector blow it up and paint it on a wall. It is great the way you can change the scale and make the image really large which makes a huge impact!

    Shine on Me!

My favorite room/color combo is my kitchen with rich saturated robin’s egg blue above the chair rail and a nice choclate brown below. I know it’s not for everyone, but it really makes my happy every time I walk in there and I’ve been spending a lot of time in my kitchen lately canning and entertaining friends.

    SHINE ONE ME ! ! !

Lately paint colors have been inspiring me to re-do dressers, chests and night stands. Oddly enough, right now my most favorite painting project was just adding a nice soft white to the legs of a chair I reupholstered. Maybe that’s got my heart at the moment because the chair itself was so rewarding and the coat of white on her legs was the perfect finish.

Photos of the fun chair ~ a $12 Goodwill find:

SHINE ON ME! I would love to use a monogram stensil on the wall space above our front door. We just bought a home and are currently painting away. There is no wood trim between the dining room and the living room to divide it for changing paint colors. So I would trim the space above the door and place our monogram in the center of it. I would be unique and make a clean break to change paint colors! Please SHINE ON ME!!!!

We had three 34 year old bookcases that could become one long wall unit with molding on the top. Each grown child wanted one and you should see how all three came to life (bookcases — well maybe the kids too)with different colors of paint and/or glazing and fabric. FABULOUS!

Shine on me! My favorite use of paint is re-used and re-purposed paint! Examples are two upcoming projects at my new house — a leaf pattern based on IKEA curtains (in reverse) using blue from two houses ago; use of paint testers to create artwork for a room (after we pick the final paint).

I haven’t done much painting lately but I have a few projects on my list – one is an accent wall in my house and the other is to update the lingerie chest in my closet with a fresh coat of paint and some new hardware. Sunny may have given me some creative inspiration for my lingering projects.

Shine on Me! One way I love to use paint is on hardwood floors. We pulled the old carpet up and found beautiful hardwood underneath. Then we sanded and stained the floors. To “hide” the holes from the tackstrip we painted a cream-colored border all the way around the room. Then we sealed the floors and the border with polyurethane to leave a beautiful shine!
