Fab Freebie: Sunny Side Up

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries.***

If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:

Sunny Give Katie Floor

Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:

Sunny Give Store 2

Sunny Give Store

Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.

Sunny Give Clover Floor

But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).

Sunny Give Product Four

So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Paint can do so much!! My favorite is to mix it with glaze. I love the way it transforms the color, look, and FEEL of a room! Of course, I love using stencils as well, especially when it becomes that unexpected element!

    Shine on me!

I saw a laundry room in a magazine recently that had green walls that they had painted HUGE clothspin on using a stencil. They lined them up (two vertically and they ran side by side on the wall). They only did one wall with the stencils and it looked amazing. I can’t remember the magazine but loved the look! Unfortunately I have very heavy texture on my laundry room walls (it’s not attractive) and cannot stencil. I did recently paint the walls green though :)

    “SHINE ON ME”

I would like to try a paint teqhnique on my dining walls that a friend told me about. You paint the walls the shade you want in flat then you add vertical stripes in the same shade but high gloss. The contrast creates a very elegant look. I would do that with one of these oh-so-fab stencils if I won!

    SHINE ON ME…

My favorite was when I painted a brick wall that surrounded our fireplace a deep burgandy as a focal wall (other walls were a beautiful white with texture)…but even better, was that I added some paint glitter that when the light hit just right gave it a beautiful gleam….absolutely STUNNING in the evening with the fireplace on…would DEFINITELY do this again….I do miss that wall in that house, but sure don’t miss the other DIY work….was a bit more than I could handle (toilet explode, etc etc….but that’s for another story)

    SHINE ON ME!

While renovating an office building from the 1920’s to apartments, we stumbled upon an old iron grate that probably was used for covering a vent. It had a gorgeous almost moorish pattern to it. I painted that baby white and now it sits atop my low bookshelves with a mustard colored ceramic bird. By adding that texture, it totally made the vignette.

    SHINE ON ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are in the process of transforming this giant, ugly warehouse-ish building into a home. (Totally my husband’s idea, by the way, but I am increasingly on board since I LOVE how it is turning out!) In our living room, we left one of the block walls exposed, in a homage to the building’s industrial roots. We painted it a fun red color– which looked OK… but then we decided to glaze it with a dark stain, so it would just show up in the nooks and crannys. My husband calls it the “dirty wall”, but I love how it added an instant aged patina and a load of character!

I have a passion of hand-painted lettering on signs. It’s always amazing how paint can transform a simple wood plank into something with a definitive purpose by way of letters, design and color. It’s very easily seen by the sign painter as the layers and shapes of color are done.

Also, paint can easily transform a room and the exterior of a home in an amazing way.

Shine on me! I painted a yucky old dresser that had hideous stencils from the 70s on it black, added funky/cool new knobs, and hung a fab mirror which I painted black above it, and set it up in our entryway When we sold our house, the people that bought it offered a thousand bucks for the combo! I spent a total of 30 bucks on the whole thing.
