Fab Freebie: Sunny Side Up

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries.***

If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:

Sunny Give Katie Floor

Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:

Sunny Give Store 2

Sunny Give Store

Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.

Sunny Give Clover Floor

But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).

Sunny Give Product Four

So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

See our Giveaway FAQs page for more info. Pics courtesy of Sunny’s Goodtime Paints.

I have been eyeing the garden stools online at Pottery Barn for some time but have been too cheap to pay the $159. Well this weekend I spotted a $29 garden stool at Marshall’s that wasn’t the color I wanted so I drug it to Lowe’s and bought some spray paint primer and paint and now it looks very much like the one at Pottery Barn!

    SHINE ON ME –

I haven’t tried it – not brave enough yet – but I love the look of painted floors with fun designs and stencils. It adds such whimsy and is a cheap alternative to a rug in some ways.

Recently I saw a pair of old doors with glass panes hung side by side as a room divider and the panes had a paisley print painted in each one in a series of three coordinating colors. THey were used to seperate an office area in a basement. You could see in but it will had a bit of privacy!

I recently painted the 60 year old knotty pine paneling in our home! With just a few coats of high hiding primer and pear green paint, it went from feeling dark, old fashioned, and closed in to feeling open, fresh, and clean! We love it!

    SHINE ON ME!

My husband and I desperately wanted new kitchen countertops, but could not afford the granite that we wanted so badly! Instead of settling for something that was only slightly less expensive, we opted to PAINT our countertops! We used a granite sample to pick our paint colors, then simply sponged them on one color at a time. After several coats of polycrylic, they look just like granite – and the whole kitchen cost less than $100. We get compliments on them all the time!

    Shine on me!!

In third grade, we studied the rain forest in school and I came home begging my mom for a rain forest themed room. She went all out, painting my walls lots of different shades of green with leaf and flower stencils. She even got up on a ladder and sponged clouds on a blue ceiling. I loved that room for years and almost cried when we had to paint over it to sell the house. Never underestimate what a little paint and a lot of imagination can create!

I looooooove to paint – furniture refinishing, walls, you name it! My husband hates it and can’t understand why I find it therapeutic to just be in the “painting zone!” My fav go-to wall color is Sherwin Williams Macadamia . . . the perfect neutral that’s showcased in our living room and home office!

My favorite use of paint has to be the mural I did for a daycare about 8 years ago. The teacher in the room really wanted a forest and on one of the branches was a mother fairy cuddling the tiny baby fairy. It was awesome. Sadly the only pictures that survived are of when I finished the fairy wall…

I was so inspired by the reader re-design you featured a few weeks back, where an artist painted a stencil she designed on the wall. She used a high gloss version of the paint to paint the design, and a flat version of the same color for the rest of the wall – beautiful! I’d love to re-create the same look for my master bedroom, and I think one of Sunny’s stencils will be just the trick to get the look!

I love all paint! It’s amazing how just one gallon of paint can completely transform a room. My current fav, which I’m sure will change, is our family room where we put up a glossy white chair rail and baseboards. The bottom half is painted in a suede texture forest green paint and the top is a light creamy eggshell sage.

I once stenciled a picket fence complete with flowers, critters and bird houses around my daughter’s entire room. It took me HOURS AND HOURS of work to get it done, but when I finished it…I ADORED IT. We now rent that home out and I won’t let anyone paint over it. It still looks beautiful, but I don’t think the teenager who uses that room loves it…sorry.
