Fab Freebie: Sunny Side Up

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries.***

If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:

Sunny Give Katie Floor

Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:

Sunny Give Store 2

Sunny Give Store

Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.

Sunny Give Clover Floor

But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).

Sunny Give Product Four

So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:

  • PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
  • NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
  • PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

    SHINE ON ME!

Years ago I bought a couple of hideous brass Gothic-style lamps from an estate sale. I spray painted them black and added two new shades. The effect was fantastic and I’ve always gotten compliments on them! Since then I’ve updated them a few more times, the most recent, adding barrel lamp shades. I’m considering painting them white for another style boost!

I am hoping to do this treatment in my bedroom soon: paint in a mid-tone flat color, then stencil over it with a glaze (no color), so the pattern is in shine only. sigh…

i love how paint can transform badly stained (think pets!) hardwood floors. we bought a home whose floors were black with stains from dogs and cats. white paint can really help, and creates a beachy feel, even when you think all is lost.

I painted our honey oak cabinets in our bathroom, black. That first brush stroke was pretty scary. But they turned out great! Now I thinking how would a stencil in black (different sheen)look on them. Oooh, I hope I win so I can try!

I love how paint can transform almost anything. I’m in the middle of painting my 50’s wood paneled kitchen bright, clean, white, and it’s amazing how the paint even brings out the texture of the wood panels that was hidden behind all those dark knots before!

    SHINE ON ME!!!

I think I’ve shared this in your comments before, but my favorite paint technique, and one which is NEVER believed when I tell people, is to paint the ceiling a shade or two DARKER than the walls. People are always afraid this is going to make the room feel closed in and claustrophobic, but it has exactly the opposite effect. Dark colors recede and actually look further away than light colors, so upping it by just a shade makes your room feel taller and less closed-in.

Most recently we’ve used paint to add a pop of color to our kids rooms. Instead of painting the girls room all bubble gum pink. We chose to paint the walls white and add a stripe of pink and brown around the perimeter of the room about 3/4 of the way up the wall. We did the same thing in our sons room but with brown only and a light blue base.

SHINE ON ME…so that I win this giveaway :) I would so love to score one of these gift certificates! We’re in the process of fixing up a vacation cottage in the country AND looking to build a house in the city where we live so I could use all the inspiration I can find.

I’ve had lots of painting adventures over the years. One time I mixed fine sand with paint to create a stucco look in a bathroom. LOVED it! Also painted over a ceramic back splash that was shiny black (ewwww!) and then used the spray paint that looks like stone. HUGE improvement. Love trying new things.

The first time I was inspired by paint was actually when I saw your half bath! I hadn’t seen any appealing stripes in a room until then. It made me really think about painting all of the rooms in our house, and now we’re slowly getting started. A stencil from Sunny would be awesome!

    SHINE ON ME!

We just painted our three/four season front porch a beautiful robins-egg-blue…Martha Stewart color from Home Depot ‘river mist’. SO GOOD! The walls are bead-board so it looks extra beachy. I can’t wait to start decorating our porch. Next step: to insulate the porch so we can enjoy it when the snow is falling…

But p.s…i would not recommend Martha Stewart paint. We got the color mixed in Behr primer-in-one paint. If we had the money, I would go for Sherwin Williams. But alas…..

    Cheers!

I love the use of stencils (like your earlier post today highlighting Sunny) that use a similar shade of paint on paint so that the stencil isn’t booming out at you but still gives texture to the wall.
