Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Skull Ornamental Print

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Skull Cardboard Safari

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

  • PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
  • PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

i absolutely love halloween!!! Two years ago I was Stephen’s King Carrie and i had so much fun painting blood all over my hair (wig of course) and face. My friend’s young daughter, who would get easily scared, i had to tell her I was painting and i got a little messy! LOL

My favorite costume of all time…the scariest was the year that my little sister was little red riding hood and i took her trick or treating as the big bad wolf. Later that night, my parents went to a party in the same costumes. My mother wore the costume as little red riding whore and dad wore the big bad wolf mask.

My husband kids me that I have 2 basic costumes I recycle each year, yet he loves to get into the crazy contacts and evil makeup. We’ll probably pull our the Halloween decor this weekend and carve some pumpkins. I will try the bats AND the idea w/the bleeding candles. FUN FUN

I really like the skulls because I’m reentering my radiologic career — and they’re a fun reminder!

    SKULL ME!!

I used to be something crazy every year when I was in elementary school. I got all my ideas from the “American Girl” catalogs. One year I was candy buttons (styrafoam board and cut-in-half and spray painted balls), another year I was jelly beans (colored balloons and a trash bag), and once I was a picnic table (cheap plastic “blanket” with plates, cups, chips, etc. glued to it).

Not sure what I’ll be this year…but I hope it’s as fun/creative as my old costumes :)

I love dressing up for halloween. I went to college at Kent state Univ, which goes all out for halloween every year, so I have had the opportunity to see and Wear quite a few interesting halloween costumes, Ranging from one of 3 blind mice to a golden goddess, but my favorite costume was as a casualty from Hitchcock’s “the Birds”. I bought several white christmas doves from the local craft store and spray painted them black. I attached one (minus it’s head) to a head band, one to a wire hanger that made it look like it was flying at me, and a third (again minus it’s head) safety pinned to my back. Of course I had fake blood and cuts everywhere as well as tears in my cloths. It was great!

My favorite costumes were my friend and I dressing
as Icarus and Daedalus (who flew too close to the sun).
We made wings out of waxed paper (took all day) and
I went so far as to burn my set (I was Icarus). Thank God
I did it over the bathtub-I almost burned my fool house down.
I don’t recommend anyone trying at home. We did win a
    prize, though!

My favorite Halloween costumes are for the kid set & nothing terribly creative: when I was young and Rubiks cubes were all the rage… we spray painted a box and used black electrical tape to designate the cubes. And I could wear my big warm puffy jacket underneath =) When my guys were younger and wanted to wear a costume to school they would just wear black jeans & a black t-neck that I hand-stitched red, yellow & green felt circles on… adorable COMFORTABLE traffic signals!

Ever since I was a little kid (and before, I assume), my mom would go crazy with decorating the house and yard for each and every holiday. Halloween always brought out the spookiness in her, and our house would be complete with a mock graveyard, including ghosts. Since I’ve moved away, I’ve been a bit limited in my small apartment decoration (though my roommate must be commended for her Halloween enthusiasm!). I can’t wait to have my own yard to go crazy with!

Maybe not the weirdest in the world, but I don’t go crazy with Halloween costumes due to the costume I had in kindergarten. It was a blue dinosaur with green spots. A stegasarous to be exact. And it had a tail. A BIG tail. I couldn’t sit down in my tiny kindergartener seat, which made my day bad enough. But, then, the kindergarteners got to walk up and down the hall and show all of the older kids our costumes. I officially decided I hated my costume when someone remarked, “Look at the cute little lizard!” All that trouble to be called a lizard…

Last year was my favorite Halloween because it was the first with my daughter. She was 5 months old and went as a chili pepper. I made a taco costume for myself so we coordinated. This year I am going to have a BIG belly for Halloween as I am going to be 8 months pregnant. I would love to have a clever costume that incorporates my giant mid-section – any ideas?

One of my favorite costumes was last year. My hubs and I dressed up as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for a bit of economical humor. I dressed in a tattered gown and fur with a tear-stained face. He had on a tattered suit with his empty pockets hanging out, a pizza box briefcase and taco shell wallet. We spent no money on these and we won the prize for Best Costume!

My favorite costume was when I dressed as an 80’s workout instructor, complete with the leotard over the leggings, legwarmers, denim jacket, and headband! I went out of control with teasing my hair, doing the big, curled bangs, and blue eyeshadow! It was SO much fun! Even more fun was at the party when I was inspired to teach a faux-aerobics class… GOOD TIMES!

I must admit, I”ve been pretty lame about dressing up the last couple of years. Usually I’m throwing something together the week of – cowgirl, vampire, doctor. However, my husband stole the show last year when he dressed in a full on gorilla suit (he got a great deal after Halloween the year before). This year I”m going as dice to my Bunco Halloween party.

Halloween is my favorite holiday! One of my favorite Halloween costumes I’ve seen belongs to my last room mate – she decided to be a Book Worm and sewed little red mittens all the way down her dark green sweatshirt and sweatpants. Then she sewed little antenna on a black beanie, wore big nerd glasses and carried a giant hardback around all evening – she was great!!

My favorite costume of all time was Steve Urkel. It was 2nd grade and the little boy that wore it grew up to become my husband! We were married last month (15 years later!). His costume has always stuck in my head because it was when “Famiy Matters” (Steve Urkel’s nerdy self..) was on and he painted himself black and had the taped bifocals and suspenders and it was perfect. Needless to say he won the costume contest and my little heart.(Which he still does to this day) =)

My mom made all of my Halloween costumes growing up, and I’m keeping the tradition strong! This means MONTHS of planning, sewing, and DIY. All of my costumes were my fave, but my dorkiest was probably Dr. Quinn, from the TV show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, which must of come out while I was 10 or so. Not really sure why I was such a dork.
