Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Skull Ornamental Print

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Skull Cardboard Safari

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

  • PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
  • PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

    SKULL ME!

As a kid I used to go as the Queen of Hearts. It was the most beautiful costume, and I tried to wear it faithfully each year until it no longer fit me. By 4th grade I was too big. I also used to dress up as a lion, but when I outgrew that costume my mother cut it into pieces trying to make it fit the dog!

    SKULL ME!

When we were too old to go trick-or-treating but still didn’t want to acknowledge the fact that we were growing up, my friends and I dressed up as a caterpillar and went out anyways. We figured that since we were hunched over no one would realize that we were tall and actually in high school.

I was once the nurse from Kill Bill, complete with long blond hair, eye patch and creepy tune to whistle. I found some old (and huge) nurses’ whites at goodwill and cut them down to fit me.

I was also once Betty Boop, which I put together on a budget. One clearance red dress, black wig, red lipstick, pearls and seamed stockings, and I was good to go.

SKULL ME! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! When my daughter was young, I would make her a little outfit for school out of Halloween fabric so she could be “in the spirit” all October without resorting to wearing a costume every day! Now that she has started college, I made three little skirts for the daughters of friends to carry on the tradition…

    SKULL ME!

For several years in high school my favorite costume was a “borrowed” one from a friend that I never managed to give back. It was a pink genie costume with a gauzy material and braided pink and gold belt, very 80’s! I actually wore it many years later to dress up as Jeanie in I dream of Jeanie with a big blonde wig (I’m not a good blonde).

I once dressed up like a clown, but I used old clothes out of my grandmother’s “junk” room, and ended up looking like a hobo…with a purple ‘fro wig. Wish I had pictures, because it was AWESOME.

It wasn’t my costume, but last year we had a trick-or-treater (1 of the 2 that came to our house) who was dressed like “dead Hannah Montana”. Not even kidding. She had a bullet hole painted on her forehead. I cried.

    SKULL ME!

My best costume was in second grade, but it flopped. I remember sitting at the kitchen table contemplating hard about what I wanted to be, and my two main criteria were to be something that no one else was going to be and that you could not tell who I was behind the costume. The principal always guessed who you were and I so badly wanted to be the child he could not figure out.

The linen closet happened to be open, and my idea presented itself! I was going to be a placemat! It was the most creative and brilliant idea and, by some miracle, my parents agreed. It became a fun DIY weekend project for the whole family.

Dad is in construction, so he scored a refrigerator cardboard box, built a frame, created a small box that was placed over my head and kept in place by a baseball cap mounted on the inside. We painted it white and put embellishments on it to “decorate it” then we glued, paper plates, silverware, napkins and even a flower in a vase. Proportion was a little off, but you got the idea that it was a placemat. And the only thing you could see of me was my eyes behind the little eye holes that were cut out and my arms sticking out of the sides. It was the best costume ever and I was beside myself with joy.

We took it to my first function, a family friends halloween party. Obviously I could not sit in the car with it on, so we brought it with us. Dad put it on me and we walked to the door where we encounted the major design flaw of the costume, I could not bend my knees at all! Nada. I could not go up a flight of stairs. Utter disappointment, so the costume stopped there. I ended up being a baby. Boo.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and I used to loooove dressing up. Now, with a hubby who doesn’t “do” the costume thing any longer it’s harder to find a reason to make a costume.

One of my best Halloween memories was in college when I decided to be a witch. I had never been a witch before and was so proud of that, however, when I found some kick ass red and black striped stockings, a witch was born. The whole costume was topped off with green face and hand paint and I looked fab. My boyfriend (hubby now) went as a stoner. He bough a Grateful Dead tie-dyed shirt and splashed it in patchouli oil (we couldn’t get rid of the smell for weeks) and made fack joints that he carried around with him; messy hair and sunglasses completed the look. Both of these aren’t really funny or fantastic, however, while driving home from a costume party our car was hit by a driver making an illegal turn. So, the two of us had to stand out on the side of a busy intersection (during a college homecoming weekend where crusing said street is a huge ordeal) and wait for the cops to arrive. We were quite the sight!

Best costume ever: I wore all black, teased my dark hair up really big, painted my face black, wore black sunglasses and gloves. Then I got a candy dispenser that looked like an iPod with a clear front, (removed candy) and loaded it up with glow bracelets. Then I took my own iPod headphones and taped the connector end to the glow-y iPod and wore the headphones. I danced around like crazy all night. I was an iPod commercial!

A couple of years ago my husband and I dressed up as Britney Spears and Kevin Federline and had THE BEST time with it! This was when Britney was pregnant so of course I got myself a big ‘ol belly with a T-shirt that said “I’m bringing sexy back”, trucker hat, blonde wig, and taco bell cup to complete the look. My husband kept trying to get people to “buy” his CD all night and was carrying around another baby that we kept dropping all night. Some people didn’t even recognize me…it was so much fun!

When I was a kid, my sister and I dressed as presents. We wore white tights and turtlenecks topped with boxes wrapped in wrapping paper and bows on our heads. The only problem was that we lived out in the country so we had to drive from house to house to trick or treat. It got very tiring to take that dumb box off and put it in the trunk after each house.

My most lucrative Halloween costume was in college when I dressed as Dolly Parton complete with balloon boobs and gold lame’ gown. I won $50 in a costume contest.

My favorite costume was in college. Me and my 3 good friends dressed up in my plus sized Grandma’s square dancing outfits. We went out on the town and had a hysterical time. All of the other girls were sexy kittens and nurses and then we’d come along in huge red and purple square dancing skirts. It was classic!

My strangest/best Halloween costume was Kermit the Frog. I was 5 or 6, and did I want to be Barbie? No. Or even a ballerina? Nope. I dressed in a Kermit the Frog sailor costume and had a plastic Kermit face. The photos are priceless. My older brother was Scooby Doo that year, so we had an animal theme going I guess.

My favorite costume was something I pulled together when I was about 5 years. I dressed up up as a cowgirl – but not just any cowgirl, a cowgirl with a real live pony. My parents allowed me to go trick-or-treating while riding my little black shetland pony, Oreo Cookie. She actually walked right up to all of the doors with me on her back. She probably looked more like a great dane than a pony since she was so tiny. People were shocked because we lived in a development (not on a farm) and I kept my pony secretly in the back yard because she was very old and needed special attention at the time. I’ll always remember that Halloween.

My fave costume was 3 years ago; I dressed as a cereal killer, wearing clothing with bloody bits of breakfast cereal stuck to it while carrying around a cereal box with a knife stabbed through it and a bloody gash with gory cereal spilling from the wound. The host’s dog kept eating the pieces of cereal off of my clothes.

We couldn’t think of anything for my husband to be so we bought him the same witch costume in a larger size, got him some black heals, a wig and some fake boobs. We told people we were twin witches. It was pretty awesome. He of course was very unladylike which made it even funnier.

GREAT POST! October 20th will make 4 months that we’ve been in our new house, hence it’s our first Halloween here. We are still deciding on decor, color schemes etc. but have decided that Halloween will be all about DIY – even the costumes. My 12 yr old Daughter is trowing together some clothes she has and a crazy hat to be a ‘Pimp’ (her idea), my 7 yr old son is using a Lab coat from an old doctor costume to become a ‘Mad Scientist’, Because my husband I and I love HBO’s ‘True Blood’ we are going as Vampires – Cool black clothes, vamp teeth, faux blood… It shall be interesting. ;)

Can’t wait to see what else you guys have up your sleeves for Halloween.
