Fab Freebie: Skulloween

***This giveaway is no longer accepting entries***

We began getting into the Halloween spirit last week (and there’s more where that came from) so we thought we’d use this week’s freebie to give one lucky person to chance to add some serious spook to their space. And we’re doing it thanks to two of our favorite collaborators: Skull-A-Day and Cardboard Safari.

Skull-A-Day is the brainchild of our good friend Noah Scalin. His yearlong project of creating skulls out of ordinary (pencils, rice) and not-so-ordinary (butterflies, vegemite) materials begat a Webby-award winning website, a book, art exhibits, an appearance on Martha Stewart and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. And now this local celeb is offering up two skull-tastic art prints for one lucky reader – the United Skull of America print (it’s a skull made out of US states!) and an Ornamental Skull print (in all of its ornate glory) – which will both bring some eerie style to your home this month (and the other eleven if you’re so inclined).

Plus, this week’s winner will score two great pieces from Cardboard Safari, who you may remember from their rhino / rocket giveaway a few months ago. This time they’re dishing out their Halloween designs – the spooky skull wreath and the tabletop puzzle skull (which was designed by Noah, btw). Both are made from recycled cardboard, in your choice of brown or white (which can also be painted any color you please).

Skull Cardboard Safari

Wanna score this eerily entertaining gift pack? Here’s how:

  • PRIZE: United Skull of America & Ornamental Skull prints from Skull-A-Day, Skull Wreath & Puzzle Skull from Cardboard Safari
  • TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SKULL ME” and…
  • BONUS QUESTION: …tell us about your best / favorite / weirdest Halloween costume of all time. Links to pictures are encouraged. :)
  • GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, October 14th at 8pm EST
  • PRIZE SHIPS: USA only
  • USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

Don’t remember what age, but I was definitely Harriet the Spy once. It was amazing. I had a little belt with a magnifying glass, and a notepad, and all sorts of things. Wow… I was a nerd.

How apropos for a Skull contest… My son 6 yr old son is a HUGE fan of “The Nightmare before Christmas” movie- so last year I made him a Jack Skellington costume! I found a small ladies black & white pin-striped blazer that I cut and sewed to make (kinda) like Jack’s jacket and made his bat bowtie out of felt, pipe cleaners and white puffy paint. I painted his face, popped a white skull cap on him and he was THRILLED! And so was his Mama. ;)

I hope the link to the pics work… **fingers crossed**

“Skull Me”…my favorite halloween costume was when I dressed up as a head on a platter…it was pre-digital cameras so I don’t have a link but it was home made and really wasy to do…I cut a dishwasher box to look like a table, used one of my mom’s plastic table cloths, glued plastic plates and silverware to the table cloth, glued play food on the plates, and glued a plastic silver serving tray in the middle, then cut a hole for my head and stuck my head through the middle. I wore all black so my clothes weren’t distracting. I was so fun but hard to get through door ways:)

The costume I remember the most was not due to the costume but the weather. I had wanted to be a cheerleader and had a cute outfit when a freak snow storm hit. We had over a foot of snow on actual Halloween. My mom told me even cheerleaders have to wear coats. I got all dressed up and then had to put on my overly huge pink coat. I really should have went as a valentine. I was made the whole time and unzipped my coat for anyone who asked what I was! BTW I think I was 6 or 7.

I have GREAT halloween ideas but rarely go through with them. Last year I wanted to dress my three boys as the three little pigs and convince my husband to be the big bad wolf and I would be little red riding hood. It would have been HILARIOUS! Didn’t happen though.

When my youngest was a baby I wanted to dress him as a parrot and the rest of us as pirates. Again didn’t happen. My lack of follow through with my theme costumes is pretty depressing actually. One day though, one day…

Last year I made a Black Canary (a DC Comics character) costume and wore it to our local comic convention, Dragon*Con, and then Halloween. It consisted of a black strapless leotard, a leather jacket, fingerless gloves, fishnets, a black choker, black leather boots, and plenty of eyeliner. Everyone at Dragon*Con knew who I was, but I think for the Halloween party we attended people had no idea. Another reason I love the company of fellow nerds! ;)

my favorite halloween costume was probably the pink crayon i was for several years as a wee youngin’ but i think one of the more creative costumes was a die in fifth grade. searched for a photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stoofanie/4007314191/.

my mom took a box, cut three holes (arms and head), removed the bottom flaps and covered it in white contact paper. the holes were cut out of construction paper and spray glued on.

another good costume–the year prior to the die, she found an old gingham dress for me and a white apron and i was raggedy ann. she dyed one of those old school white rope/string mops red with food coloring. her hands were red for 2 weeks after.

i have a picture for the raggedy ann costume. my sister was learning how to sew then and made her own costume, betty rubble (? whichever one wears the blue dress). found a photo of it too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stoofanie/4008091848/

Skull Me! When I was a kid, my mom dressed me up as a jelly bean jar- which boils down to a clear plastic bag and a bunch of balloons and my 5 year old self shoved into the bag (Don’t worry- there were holes for my limbs) complete with a paper plate lid on top of my head. Unfortunately, there are no pictures, only painful memories of having to walk up to the door alone because no one else could fit on the porch with me!

My favorite hallowe’en costume ever was when i was about 5, my mother crafted a hand-made pumpkin costume out of Lord only knows what, with a giant stem head piece and everything. I remember the head piece being so heavy I couldn’t tilt my head forward or back or I’d lose my balance, and the pumpkin was so wide I couldn’t fit through average sized doorways, they had to take me out the back door and lift me OVER the gate because I didn’t fit through that either! But I bravely waddled down the streets for hours, filling up my pillow case =)

By the way that second picture down is GORGEOUS, how could anyone not want to keep that out all year round?!
